EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants have a late-season monopoly on the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week Award.

Punter Jamie Gillan today collected the Week 18 honor for his excellent performance in the Giants' 27-10 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2023 season finale on Sunday. In Week 17, Gunner Olszewski received the award after returning a punt 94 yards for a touchdown vs. the Los Angeles Rams.

The Giants are the first team to have different players named Special Teams Player of the Week in consecutive weeks within a season since the 2020 New England Patriots, whose honoree in Week 12 was kicker Nick Folk and in Week 13 was punt returner … Gunner Olszewski.

Gillan repeatedly helped give the Giants favorable field position on Sunday. He averaged 46.5 gross yards and 44.0 net yards on five punts. Four of Gillan's punts were downed or fair caught inside the 20-yard line, including one at the nine. The fifth punt was fielded by Britain Covey at the 11-yard line and returned eight yards to the 19. His longest kick was 55 yards.

In his second season with the Giants and fifth in the NFL, Gillan posted career-high numbers of 95 punts, 35 kicks inside the 20, and a 42.3-yard net average. That latter figure was a franchise single-season record (since 1976, when net average became an official statistic). Riley Dixon held the former mark with a 42.0-yard net average in 2019. Gillan ranked 12th in the league in that category. He had only four touchbacks.

Gillan's 95 punts and 35 inside the 20 were each the league's third-highest total.

His 74-yard punt against New England on Nov. 26 is tied for the second-longest in Giants history. Len Younce (Nov. 14, 1943, vs. the Chicago Bears) and Don Chandler (Oct. 11, 1964 at Dallas) also kicked 74-yard punts. Rodney Williams holds the franchise record with a 90-yarder at Denver on Sept. 10, 2010.

This is the first instance in which the Giants have had consecutive players of the week since 2016, when punter Brad Wing was cited in Week 14 vs. Dallas and Week 15 against Detroit. Wing had been the last Giants punter to win the award.

Gillan is the third Giant to be honored as a player of the week in 2023. Quarterback Tommy DeVito was the NFC Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Giants to a Monday night victory against Green Bay on Dec. 11 (Week 14).

Aside from the Olszewski/Gillan back-to-back, there were four other instances this season of a team having consecutive players of the week from the same units.

Cleveland kicker Dustin Hopkins was the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week in Weeks 6-7. Minnesota linebacker Jordan Hicks and safety Camryn Bynum were the NFC Defensive Players of the Week in Weeks 6-7. Philadelphia wide receiver A.J. Brown and quarterback Jalen Hurts were the NFC offensive honorees in Weeks 7-8, and Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud and running back Devin Singletary earned the AFC award in the same category in Weeks 9-10.
