2019 Giants Preview: Giants/Eagles, Week 14

SAQUON-BARKLEY-EAGLES

The New York Giants (2-10) will look to end an eight-game losing streak, the franchise's longest stretch without a win since 2004, when they hit the road to take on the Philadelphia Eagles (5-7) at Lincoln Financial Field on Monday night.

The Week 14 matchup represents the first of two December meetings between the NFC East rivals. The Eagles will come to MetLife Stadium to face the Giants in the regular season finale in Week 17.

Philadelphia has a lot on the line in this matchup, as the Eagles sit just one game behind the Cowboys for the division lead. New York has lost the previous five games between the two teams, with their last win against Philadelphia coming in Week 9 of the 2016 season.

Let's dive right in to this Week 14 matchup between NFC East foes.

INTRIGUING MATCHUPS

  • Giants WR Darius Slayton vs. Eagles CB Ronald Darby – After missing the first two games of the season, Slayton enters this matchup ranking 4th in receptions, 6th in receiving yards and tied for 2nd in receiving touchdowns among rookie wide receivers. The rookie fifth-round pick has recorded either 6 receptions or at least 50 yards in four of the last five games, including two outings with multiple touchdowns. Darby, along with fellow outside corner Jalen Mills, are coming off a game in which they allowed Dolphins receiver DeVante Parker to explode for 7 receptions, 159 yards and 2 touchdowns.
  • Giants RG Kevin Zeitler vs. Eagles DT Fletcher Cox – Despite a down year in his standards, Cox is still one of the top defensive tackles in the NFL. The four-time Pro Bowl DT has collected 32 tackles (21 solo), 3.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 5 tackles for loss and 8 QB hits while playing in all 12 games. Although he has only 3.5 sacks, Cox has been a force in the Eagles' pass rush this season. Zeitler has had a solid 2019 campaign himself, but will have his work cut out for him going up against Cox Monday night.
  • Giants DB Grant Haley vs. Eagles WR Nelson Agholor – With Corey Ballentine missing Week 14 due to his concussion suffered against the Packers, Haley will step back in as New York's slot corner. While serving in that role last year against the Eagles in Week 12, Haley finished with 3 solo tackles and a pass defended while limiting Agholor to only 1 reception for 12 yards. Agholor has not topped four receptions or 42 yards in eight consecutive games, but did enjoy a two-game stretch at the beginning of the season where he racked up a total of 16 receptions for 157 yards and 3 touchdowns. In last week's game against Green Bay, Haley helped hold Geronimo Allison to two receptions for 20 yards.

NOTES AND QUOTES

  • Eli Manning needs one win for a career record over .500. Manning enters this matchup having started 232 games in which he split right down the middle, going 116-116.
  • Saquon Barkley has caught at least one pass in each of his 25 career games. The record for consecutive games with a catch to start a career in a Giants uniform is 26, by Ron Johnson (1970-72). Five NFL backs have longer active streaks to start their careers: Carolina's Christian McCaffrey (44), Chicago's Tarik Cohen (44), New Orleans' Alvin Kamara (41), Jacksonville's Leonard Fournette (33) and Indianapolis' Nyheim Hines (28).
  • "They're different," Eagles Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz said about the Giants' offense with Manning under center. "Jones had been running some zone read and had made some scramble plays. He had been their second-leading rusher and averaging 6 yards a carry, so scramble was a part of it and zone read was a part of it and that kind of stuff. Eli, that's not a huge part of his game. Jones had been holding the ball a little bit in the pocket. We know Eli's not going to hold it. The ball's going to come out quick."

NEXT WEEK

Eagles:
