Postgame Coach Tom Coughlin Interview

Opening Remarks:

We played hard and did a lot of good things but we didn't win. There is no hanging your head, it is a tough business and you have to do the things you have to do to win the game. I give credit to a lot of the players that coming into the stadium didn't know they were going to play in the positions that they played in. Mitch Petrus, Kevin Boothe, the defensive guys that got shuffled around because of injuries and all the guys that had to turn around and play special teams, those guys deserve a lot of credit. We battled back and forth and I thought that it would be a close game. I thought statically, believe it or not, the two teams were very close. Obviously, it was a few yards here and there but coming into the game, we felt pretty good about it. I had a number in my mind that I thought we would hold them to and what we would score and obviously it didn't work the way I planned. We have four games to go and three of them in our division. We have to regroup and I think this brings us together even tighter than we have ever been before as a team. Guys laid it on the line for each other tonight and they played hard. The accurate quarterback on the last drive, what can I tell you? He made a couple significant plays late and we felt that we would be going into overtime. It was not to be.

Q: Can a loss like this have a positive effect?

A: It can have a positive if you play the way that we played and if you give the effort that we gave and if you play with the intensity that we played with. We fully, I think every guy that took the field, believed that we could win. Those are the kind of emotional things that bind you together.

Q: Do you think this game will benefit the Giants like the regular season game against the Patriots did in 2007?

A: I hope so. I would hope that would be the case. As I said, we have four games to go and every one of these games is critical to our future.

Q: Does it sting a little more knowing that Dallas didn't win?

A: I don't know if it can sting any more than it does. If you are in this business, at this level, and you lose, it is very difficult.

Q: Was it a busted coverage on Green Bay's first touchdown of the second half?

A: Yes, it was busted coverage. They ran a switch route and we didn't fall off outside.

Q: Was it shocking to see them go down the field with 58 seconds left?

A: Shocking? You stood there and watched it. I don't  know how shocking it was. It hurt and it should not have happened. I thought we were in pretty good shape but you try to play coverage and you don't get enough pressure on him and you try to put pressure on him and you leave some holes in your coverage. It was back and forth. Yes, we should have got this thing into overtime. With 58 seconds, they elected to stay in the end zone so they had 80 yards to go.

Q: Did Jacquian Williams try to make a big play on the first play of the last drive?

A: I would have to see it but that is basically what happened. He wasn't able to make that play and the receiver advanced up the field with the ball and gave them a heck of the play right off the bat.

* *

Q: Do you want your guys to be aggressive like that in that situation?

A: You better be aggressive. Every time you walk on that field, you better be aggressive. That is a young guy trying to make a play. Like I said, I can't really comment until I see the play on the film.

Q: Was Prince on the field the last drive?

A: No. He and Will (Blackmon) were working on that position and I think he got a little fatigued and they made the change.

* *

Q: What did you say to the players after the game?

A: Basically what I said to you. No solace in playing well and losing. We are way past that.

* *

Q: Was there any thought to taking more time off the clock before scoring at the end?

A: I love that question. We were fighting like hell to score. Yes, it would have been nice if we knew we were going to score and we will run it down, but it doesn't work that way. I wish I could tell you that it did but it doesn't work that way.

* *

Q: Were you surprised with some of the calls didn't go your way?

A: I wouldn't put it that way. We thought that we had a legitimate reason to challenge the call right in front of our sideline. We thought we had a couple angles that proved that they would be going our way. I don't have any other information other than they didn't.

* *

Q: How did Chase Blackburn play after not playing for so long?

A: We matched interception for interception. They ran it in the end zone and it took us a couple plays but it was a big play.

* *

Q: Do you feel better about your chances down the stretch after today, more than you did a week ago?

A: I felt the same way all along. You guys are quick and my memory is pretty good. We lost by a touchdown, we lost by a touchdown and we lost by a lot of points. We came back tonight and battled. We will battle. We will battle. We have to find a way to win. These are all tight games except for one and we just have to find a way to win. We won a bunch of tight games before and we need to win a bunch of tight games again.

Q: When did you find out about Baas?

A: Around two o'clock, thank you very much.

* *

Q: Can you talk about Eli Manning's play?

A: He made a lot of plays. He stood in there and made plays. He made plays when he was off balance. He got the ball in people's hands so they can have run after the catch. He had run-pass option on the touchdown pass, which happened twice tonight, and he stuck the ball in there.

Q: How is Kenny Phillips?

A: He has a sprained knee, they are calling it a sprained knee.
