Postgame Quotes (10/11): Coach John Harbaugh, QB Jameis Winston, TE Isaiah Likely, RB Cam Skattebo, S Jevón Holland, OLB Abdul Carter

Head Coach John Harbaugh

"Okay, appreciate you guys all being here. First of all, let's talk about the Giants fans. Wow. I mean, our fans were loud. We're gonna be talking about all our false starts, I know that. And a couple of formation errors, which we got to get cleaned up. But how about theirs? Our fans, at the end of the game, especially a couple times, it was really something to see. Really proud of our fans. As far as the game, we can learn so much. But the one thing that has become very evident is what is inside of our players. Their heart, their grit, their mental toughness, their ability to overcome adversity is A plus, plus, plus. And that showed up today, so I'm very proud of that. And I'm also very excited for the fact that we can improve so much. We improved throughout the game, we did a lot of really good things. Our consistency level can get so much better, and all the little things, we can do better. We as a coaching staff do a great job of kind of finding our identity in some of these different areas and we will. So, proud of the guys though, for their fight. Would have wanted the outcome to be a win, and we'll talk about that now, I'm sure. But there's a lot to be proud of."

On his perspective of the last 30 seconds of overtime:

"Yeah, well the time ran out. That was what I saw, so that's what happened. It wasn't expected."

On how long they were going to go after the two-minute warning:

"That's a really, that's kind of, strategically, the idea was to run it twice, and then run it down, get as close as we could, protect the football, which we talked about numerous times, and then run it down and take the knee. So in case he doesn't make the field goal, there's no time for them to come back and get the field goal. That's the strategy. That's the strategy we decided on early in training camp, and that's the strategy we'll probably do next time, too. We'll see. Depends how close we are. But, Skatt [RB Cam Skattebo] knows he's got to -- Skat played a hell of a game, but he's gonna have to learn from that. And I think everybody's gotta learn from that. What type of running is called for in that situation. We practice that very situation plenty of times. I expect him to be accountable. I know he will, he already was. And he'll do better next time, so we gotta learn from that."

On what type of running is called for in those situations:

Straight ahead. Straight ahead, downhill, see what we can get. You start centering the ball around, we've done that before too. You can do it, but that's not, that field goal's very makeable, but it's not a gimme. I mean none of them are, but that's not a gimme. I've had some experience with that. And we're gonna try to get as many yards as we could and then kick the field goal."

On their emphasis on ball security in practice and if it's disheartening to see fumbles in the game:

"Gotta keep chasing it. I mean, that's the thing. You just can't throw your hands up and say, 'Well, we're just not good at it.' We have to believe in our players. We understand that at some point in time, it becomes unacceptable, but we're not there yet. We've got guys that want to do the right thing, and we have to, as a team, as an offense, we have to get to the point where we protect the football. And there'll be so many occasions during the game you'll see us doing a much better job of it. But we've got to become great at it, and we're not there yet."

On if emotionally this was a win they gave away or a loss they avoided:

"I told the guys, 'Was it a win?' No. 'Was it a loss?' No. It was a tie. 'How does that make you feel?' I'm happy it wasn't a loss and I'm sad it wasn't a win. So that's how I feel. It's a tie. I's a heck of a lot better than a loss, but it's not as good as a win. So I know that just sounds so obvious, but that's kind of how you feel. I mean, we've had a lot of these conversations over the years. We'll take it. We'll take it right now. We were down 14. Came back, and we got a tie, alright? Doesn't really matter. We should never be down 14. We let the quarterback [Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels] run too much. We didn't have our act together like we should have on offense a lot of times. We all know that. We have got, it's a long season, it's week to week. So now we gotta move on, get ready for our next game, and try to go get a win. So I guess that's the best way to describe it. I don't think it's really a very good answer, but it's the best I can do."

On his overall view of QB Jameis Winston in the fourth quarter:

"I thought he was amazing in the fourth quarter. I thought he was amazing in the second half. I thought his ability to come out and change like that. And I felt we changed our offense up, we tried some different things, and he really settled into the things we did offensively. And he was amazing. First half, he wasn't. He'd be the first to tell you that, but that's on everybody. I tell the guys, nothing good is all the one person. We're all responsible for all the good, and we're all responsible for all the bad or the not good. And so, he's right in the mix with everybody else that way. I called him up, broke the huddle, I said, what he showed out there was really remarkable."

On what he's specifically referring to when he mention changes to the offense:

"Well we started going no huddle. We started on no huddle. We were down. We started throwing the ball, drop back game. I thought Jameis just thrived in that, so that was good for us."

On not stopping the quarterback runs and if they did not have quarterback spies:

"We didn't have spies calling those runs. Maybe we should have. We had 4 man rushes called. We had some games called, at least once on the first one that we didn't execute the right way. Really, honestly, there was nothing special about those runs other than the fact that we didn't do our jobs like we need to. And we just have to get better, more consistent up front with that kind of rush."

On what he thought about the packages for QB J.J. McCarthy and on if he liked the look of them:

"I do, and I think we'll grow. We just have to see, it just all depends. I mean, the thing to me is, by any means necessary. We're in a situation now where it's by any means necessary. So we're all on board for whoever, however. That's what we've got to do. We've had guys bring [everybody we can], to whatever extent we have to. Sometimes it's gonna work. Most of the time, it's gonna work, we hope if we're gonna get to where we want to go, and sometimes it's not. So, we had a chance in a couple of those to make big plays. One of them got called back because of the formation. We had an illegal motion, so gotta clean some of that stuff up."

On how he was feeling as the clock was running down in overtime:

"I didn't want anybody to say something different happened. I wanted to get off the field before they could take it away from us, I guess. I was surprised. I was surprised. I can't say that I wasn't. It was a pretty shocking end there."

On his level of confidence in K Dominic Zvada:

"It's high. It's high. He'll learn from that. He's gonna miss at some point. So, now he's got his first miss."

On WR Malik Naber's performance:

"I thought he played his heart out, man. I thought Malik, and Zay [TE Isaiah Likely], both had 11, I think, 11 catches, was it? They both had 11 catches. I thought they played their hearts out, both of them. That's what we need from those guys. Then other guys made plays. I mean look at the catch [TE] Theo [Johnson] made, was such a huge catch. All these different guys. How about the little catch out of the backfield on the fourth down, I think it was, by [RB] Tyrone [Tracy Jr.]. I mean, was that a great play or what? To get up field. So you look back at the course of the game, you see all those plays. It's easy to get caught up in the ones that you're disappointed with and there's a lot of things that need to get better. But, there's a lot of things that were really good. We just gotta keep growing as a football team."

Quarterback Jameis Winston

On emotions after the game:

"I'm really just grateful that it was a tie. That's the first time that I've been a part of. So, it's just really good to know that we can just get so much better and just eliminate the negatives and build on the positives emotionally. And I'm just grateful that we found a way to persevere and make it a game."

On what was better for them in the second half:

"I think when your back is against the wall, you have to depend on your playmakers, and I think we did a good job of doing that, getting the guys the football, and mixing up on them, and kind of just threw them off schedule."

On using the skepticism and criticism of his viability as a starting quarterback to perform well for the Giants:

"I always focus on what my heart desires, and I say this over and over again, my desire is to be the New York Football Giants Super Bowl Winning quarterback. My desire is to be a great starting quarterback in the NFL. I dreamed of this, and this is who I am, and I know that I'm going to continue to get better and find ways to help this team win football games."

On how he feels when the Commanders do not get the play off in time:

"Grateful, very grateful. I was just thankful. Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Lord. Although they should not have been in that position, so we have to do our part. Our defense has been playing phenomenal. I'm so happy that the game ended that way, out of the possible outcome that it could have ended with, but I have to be better for this team so that we could be in a better position than that."

On the halftime change from wanting to run the ball to then throwing the ball on every play:

"We never give up, and our focus is to do whatever is required for us to win a football game. And I'm just grateful that the guys rose to the challenge, and we put on tape what we're capable of doing if the game has to go the other way. However, we still have to, you know, focus on the things that we can control, and the things that we can control are us being our very best on every single play."

On whether this game felt like a win from a comeback or a loss from a missed opportunity standpoint:

"It felt like a tie. I never really experienced a tie, and that's just what it is, but that's the fact. I believe that this is definitely a learning opportunity for us as a team, for all of us to understand that when we play great complementary football, we win football games. Although, when one of our phases is not living up to that point, we're capable of having a game like that, and we're also capable of having the games that we that we previously been having. So again, just building on the positives and eliminating all the negatives. I know that's going to be the emphasis, and I know that's tough because it is NFL football, but we have to find a way to not hurt ourselves."

On what he got out of targeting Nabers and Likely for 33 targets in today's game:

"They're world class of what they do. They're our best pass catchers. I'm grateful that they're on our team, and I have to continue to find ways to just consistently get them the football."

On targeting WR Malik Nabers more and how he responds when they aren't connecting:

"We've been there before, and I share that with all of my receivers. I tell them 'Let's keep having faith, there's 4 quarters right? The 1st quarter doesn't matter, 2nd quarter doesn't matter, 3rd quarter doesn't matter. The 4th quarter, it matters. So let's stay in the game. Let's communicate. If you have your dislikes, let's communicate it and talk it out'. Because at the end of the day, once we get on the same page, it's going to be very tough for us to be stopped. I've had a lot of great receivers over my time, and [WR] Malik [Nabers] is such an anomaly because he is so special. But we have to also just continue to find ways to make it easy to get him involved."

On RB Cam Skattebo's overtime fumble and if he said anything to him after:

"My view of that was, 'thank the Lord that our defense made a stop for us to get a tie'. [RB] Cam Skattebo is one of our best players. I had a fumble early in the 3rd quarter that hurt us. We have each other's back regardless, and I always have his back. Like I said, there's always learning moments in every single game and I am happy that we are able to learn from this with the tie. Would I want it to be a win? Of course I want it to be a win. But the fact is, it's a tie. So, we have to stick together, we have to continue to be a family, and we have to eliminate the negatives and build on the positives."

On how he is able to stay positive through the ups and downs:

"It's faith. When you have unwavering faith, you're not phased by the circumstances, conditions, and facts. That's something that I am continuing to share with the guys, I say 'let's not get phased'. Russell Wilson used to always say this thing, and one of his good friends wrote a book called 'Remain Neutral'. I think Russ did an incredible job that no matter the highs or the lows, he remained neutral. I was happy I was able to pick that up from him. Also understanding, biblically, one of my favorite verses, Philippians 4:13 says 'I can do all things through Christ, through him who strengthens me'. Before that, Paul (an apostle) is in jail. He's talking about being happy with a lot and being happy with a little. At the end of the day, he's learned the secret to being content. That is: taking whatever you get, do what you can with what you have, where you have it, and making the most out of it."

On if his rhythm gets disrupted when QB J.J. McCarthy comes in for a play:

"I think coaches get paid a lot of money to make decisions and do what they do. I have a chance to play with one of the best ones (quarterbacks) of all time in Taysom Hill. So whatever is required for this to win, I am for that."

On tapping his play call sheet at the coaches in the boxes and how frequently it happened:

"I don't know what they are doing on the road, or if they mess with my earpiece, but I'm telling them 'repeat the call to me'. We have certain calls that he's [Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy] calls and we have certain calls on the wristband. I'm like 'hey, repeat me the call. Give me a call'. Because they try to get it in as fast as possible. But with everything going on, like communicating personnel, having to tell this guy what he has, having to tell this guy to be alert for this; I require continuous communication so that I can be prepared to run the play. When you're playing faster, sometimes there could be a lot of communication going on upstairs, this is this, and they were exhausted. We were trying to be as fast as we could to them (the Commanders defense). But me, understanding that some of our players were exhausted as well. I think they did a good job, operationally, just being able to slow things down and allow everyone to get their breath and then go execute."

Tight End Isaiah Likely

On his TD catch on 4th down:

"It was fourth down so in my mind I'm thinking, we got to get in the endzone regardless. But knowing the situation, knowing the stakes, knowing that when I get the first down I can be more cautious with the ball in my hands and try to get down if I can if I'm wrapped up but, in my mind I was thinking about scoring and try to go up."

On what went right in the final 8 minutes of the game to send it into overtime:

"Great feedback at halftime. Player dialogue, coaches dialogue and really just getting behind your brother. You know, Jameis [Winston] was open ears. He understood that the job in the second half was to get us back in the game and that's exactly what he did."

On Jameis Winston's positivity in the huddle:

"It was amazing. Jameis [Winston] is one of those, when he's clicking, he's clicking. I feel like today, he showed that, fire in his eyes coming into the huddle every time knowing that when there's plays to be made, he can make a play."

On if the tie feels like a missed opportunity:

"Missed. I mean, we had the game right there. Unfortunate errors. You know, obviously there's plays that we all can have back to really just end the game from there. It wasn't a win, it wasn't a loss, obviously, but it definitely was a blessing."

On Jameis Winston having "open ears":

"I say more so feedback. I mean, whether it was a pass play, whether it was leverage your seeing out there, whether the defense tilts to me and Leek [Malik Nabers] obviously. But it's really just you know, coming into halftime, just telling Jameis [Winston] trust in that we're gonna win leverage, we're gonna win plays and him just saying I trust ya'll to throw the ball ya'll way, ya'll gonna make plays."

On the weather conditions:

"It's a football game out there. I mean, Sunday at 1pm was kickoff, so I didn't care if it was raining, sunshine or if it was gonna snow, I gotta catch the ball."

On the ending of the game:

"Defense get us the ball back please. I mean I honestly was shocked. I never tied up before in my NFL career, really in any game.

On him and Malik Nabers combining for 33 targets:

"That's crazy. Obviously, when you're down two touchdowns, you obviously gonna throw the ball a little more. So just knowing that you're playmakers gotta be playmakers and I feel like everybody did a great job. Theo [Johnson] had great catches, [Darnell] Mooney on some great catches, Malachi [Fields] getting first downs and the backs picking up protection, everybody played a big part."

On the huddle with JJ McCarthy:

"It was good. JJ [McCarthy] is really trying to learn the offense, trying to get in a groove. Obviously trying to, you know, learn a different language, but I feel like when he got in there he made the most of his opportunities."

Running Back Cam Skattebo

On what happened on the play where he fumbled the ball in overtime:

"First off, I fumbled the ball. We can't have that. I understand that. I'm going to go into the film room and get it fixed. I felt like I had good protection on it. The kid made a hell of a play. I think in that situation what I think I could do differently is try not to get the extra yards because we're already in a good position and continue to take care of the ball. If I get tackled for a loss at one yard, then I get tackled for a loss at one yard. I'm the player that tries to fight for as many yards as possible for this team. It kind of bit me in the ass there. I got to make sure I protect the ball for this football team. We win that game if I do."

On his emotions watching from the sideline:

"It sucked. It sucked. Our defenses came in clutch multiple times this year. I have my trust in them. Obviously I didn't fumble on purpose to put my trust on my defense, but I know my defense is out there that will be okay. They were able to pull it out. We at least tied."

On the range of his emotions during 3rd down conversions:

"Even myself there, I think I need to stay a little levelheaded. I got a little hyped. A little hyped up. I was starting to feel myself a little bit. I think the main thing was taking care of the ball and I lost that a little bit. I was trying to fight for yards. Like I said, I'm a player that fights for yards and tries to get extra. Like I said, that

one bit me. I know in that situation, next time, that I need to take care of the ball. If I get tackled at the line of scrimmage, I get tackled at the line of scrimmage."

On QB Jameis Winston's positivity in the fourth quarter:

"The huddle at the end of the game was awesome there. Everyone was bought in. All the playmakers were ready to make a play. From [WR Darnell] Mooney, to [WR] Malik [Nabers], to [TE] Isaiah [Likely], to [TE] Theo [Johnson], to whoever was in the game, you could just feel whoever was getting the ball, their play was going to be made. In that huddle, when you look at the huddle, you can tell when the play's going to be good when we get on the ball and when we get going. At the end of the game there, we were very crisp. There were a couple things that we could have fixed, but we were very crisp on the ball doing what we needed to do. Running the right stuff. At the end of the day, I f-d up. I'm going to put that on me and at the end of the day, we'll get better from that. We'll come out with the win next time."

On watching the Commanders final drive down the field:

"Obviously, it sucked. I messed up a play. I gave the ball up and that sucks. It sucks to be a part of that. Every emotion you could possibly think when the other team has the ball past the 50-yard line goes through your head. It's your fault, everything. I think the best players that come out of those things are the best players. The people that are able to move past that and go into next week and take care of the ball and win the game. When their number is called again, they take care of it. I think that's what makes the best players. So, when that happens, it's going to happen."

On his feelings watching the clock run down at the end of overtime:

"That was insane. The fact that they even let that happen. I guess God has my back in a way. I got to be better for this team. Especially at the end of the game there."

On whether the tie feels like a positive or not:

"I think you explained it. It wasn't a loss. It wasn't a win. I think somebody explained it to us as a lesson. We could have fixed some things. I gave up the ball at the end there. There were lessons that were taught to us today and especially me. Once we get past that and we learn from those, get them fixed and then it's a different ball game."

On QB Jameis Winston's playing:

"How many times did he throw the ball? 54 times today? We went down two touchdowns and Jameis Winston turned into Jameis Winston. He played a hell of a game. He came out that second half and started lighting it up. We got our trust in him. The guys in the huddle were like, hey, throw it to me on this one. All right, he threw it to that guy. The next guy calling his name, he was giving it to that guy. Heroic performance there. He gave us a chance to win that game."

On his concern level of recent fumbles:

"I do have three. One was out of bounds, and I was dropping the ball. I've never been the fumble guy. I hate to even put that on myself. I don't even care about that stuff. At the end of the day, I take care of both. Everybody in the locker room, trust me. All 51 other guys, 52 other guys, and all the coaching staff trust me to have the ball there at the end. I got to step up and make the play. Simple as that. I got to hold another ball and make sure that these guys know that when my name is called, that we're going to be ok."

On what's going through his mind when the clock runs out:

"It was a sigh of relief. I probably won't get reamed as much, but I'm still going to get reamed. At the end of the day, like I said, my number was called. I gave the ball up. If that happens again this year, I promise you it won't happen."

On what he shouldn't have done on the fumble:

"Like I said earlier, I'm a back that tries to get more yards. I think in that situation, I got to tailor myself down, get what I can, and get down because we're in a good position to win that game. Right there at the end, I was being me, trying to get more yards and made a mistake."

On what his gut was feeling like on the fumble:

"It sucks, there's 11 guys on the other team just screaming at you telling you, you just messed up. It's your fault. You sold the game. Everything. You get that in the huddle. You get that laying on the floor after you do it. It sucks. Like I said earlier, the great players that become great in this league move past those things and continue to work and get back on the field and make plays when their name is called.

On being told he had sold the game:

"It's just trash talk between the other team. Nothing crazy."

On his feelings of Winston's second half playing:

"Great. You must have missed the first half of this interview, but he did a great job today. He gave us a chance to win. He threw the ball 54 times and did a hell of a job doing it. We appreciate him. He led us in that second half to have a chance to win the game."

Safety Jevón Holland

On the final play of the game:

"The play that ran previously, I was a, man, I kind of ran across, and I was running with the man. I was on the field, and I turned around and looked at the clock, and there was like five seconds left. I was like, 'okay, they can't spike it, and then the clock ran out'."

On the back-and-forth of the game and the overtime finish:

"Man, it's emotional. I mean, it's like left and right, left and right, [and] kind of just trying to stay resilient. Like whatever happens, happens. Whatever happened in the game, happened, and you can't control it anymore. How can we win the game? You know what I mean, finish the game? Coming out of the half, [and] overtime, we're going to just do everything to win the game. Then even the swing at the end, [New York Giants RB Cam] Skat [Skattebo] fumbled. We're like, 'we've got to go back out.' Some guys on the sideline were going to take their gloves off. It was crazy. And then for it to run out, I mean, even when the clock ran to zero, there was a second where I was like, 'is it going to go to the second overtime?' I don't know if it was two overtimes or not. I've never been in an overtime tie like this. Yeah, that was crazy. They were just like, 'game's over,' and I was like, 'oh, sure.'"

On the defense's performance against QB Jayden Daniels in the second half:

"Jayden did a great job to capitalize on the run game, step up and make some plays. So, I mean, other than those two plays, we really tried to stop them for lack of better words. It just is what it is at the end of the day. You gotta make it happen, and you gotta do anything you can to win, whatever the circumstance may be, down to score [or] whatever it is. We would love to come out with a dub. A tie is a tie, it's kind of whatever. But you got lessons you can learn, we'll walk next week."

Outside Linebacker Abdul Carter

On being shocked how the final play played out:

"Yeah, I was. I'm just shocked, honestly. I seen the clock winding down, it was like two, three seconds left. I'm like, 'all right, they gonna get a snap'. Then I seen they were still laying on the ground. I was like, 'oh, game over.'"

On having goal line stands the last two games and how that helped the confidence and mental toughness in overtime:

"Yeah, those situations show our identity, I would say. We just gotta keep building, keep finding ways to get better, and as long as we keep being in these situations, we just gotta keep being strong, keep being resilient."

On the corrections on the quarterback runs:

"Yeah, he definitely got off for a couple big runs. We just gotta be more disciplined in our rush lanes. We talked about it all week, so honestly, that happened in the game, we like, 'All right, this really can't happen on us as a front'. We gotta be better at that."

On if he thought they were going to lose before the confusion on the final play:

"No, I didn't. I didn't think that. They still gotta kick the field goal. But, God was with us today, and we didn't lose, but no, we good."

On if he's ever been in a tie game:

"No, I haven't. First time."

On walking into the locker room after the game:

"I felt grateful, honestly. Just grateful."

On what he thought when he saw RB Cam Skattebo fumble the ball:

"It was a tough play. Obviously in those situations you gotta close it, take care of the ball, but Cam knows that. He was beating himself up about it, but at the end of the day, we didn't lose the game, so he just gotta be better next week and I think he will."
