Postgame Quotes (9/14): Coach Brian Daboll, QB Russell Wilson

Head Coach Brian Daboll

Alright. That was a tough one. Battled back and forth and the guys left it all out on the field. Tough result.

On the penalties and how they might have impacted the game?

There was a number of them. Some physical penalties. Some offsides, if you will. Far too many. I wanted the guys to play physical this game, be aggressive. Roughing the passer, DPI. There were a lot of penalties called this game. Almost 260 yards worth between two teams. We certainly don't want to have that many penalties.

On how disappointed he was in the defense after scoring 37 points.

Every game's different. Last week, it's 14-6 in the fourth quarter with seven minutes left. This game is back-and-forth with 24 seconds left. Kick off. We knew Aubrey had a long leg. Got to play tight coverage. Got to do some things rush-wise. Made some good plays. They just made one more play than we did.

On being 0-2 after the first two games after talking about the need to start fast in camp.

I just say this one hurts. The guys battled for 60-plus minutes. This one hurts. We put a lot into it.

On how he squares Russell's excellent game with the interception at the end.

Yeah, I mean, sure there's a few plays. I thought he played well. Made some plays. Attacked certain things we want to attack. The 2nd and 3 Second of the three kind of slipped out of his hand. That pushed us back, there. And whether it's complete, not incomplete, [they] obviously called it that way. Other than that, deep shot, and then communication. Not a bad communication, just communication. Kaf, I thought, called a good game. Again, this one's tough. I'm not going to sugarcoat it. The guys battled. Dallas battled. And it came down to the end.

On why they were successful on the deep balls, today.

Good throws. Good catches.

On if that was sort of what you were hoping this offense would look like this season.

Adding Russell. Having receivers he knows can get down the field, like Wan'Dale Robinson. Yeah, I mean, explosive plays help, obviously. I know you guys know that. Just collectively, just a couple of plays short. No excuses. It's a tough game back and forth. I know our guys gave everything they had.

On the thought process behind putting on when he put Jaxson Dart in for three plays.

Well, the one that we hit with Scat, we were just talking about our sideline. We didn't have much going in the running game. A couple of plays here or there. That particular one is kind of 11-on-11 football with a read. Kind of sprung Scat. It was good blocking, so, they did a couple of good jobs with the handoff and then he kept one and then slipped on one. I think that was right before the fourth down if I'm not mistaken but that was the reason why.

On James Hudson III's penalties during the opening possession.

Did Coach Daboll talk to him? Was there something going on? No, he had a number of them. I just thought let's put Beaux in, settle it down a little bit. You know, just told Carm and James [to] keep an eye one it. Again, it's not like he wants to go out there and commit these penalties. I'm going to get to one here. get the one where the guy slipped and he hit in the head, so I just thought at that particular time, put Beaux in after four penalties, three penalties, whatever it was. That's the reason why.

On if he contemplated taking him out during that particular drive.

We were moving the ball. Again, right off the game, it started with a long return. Probably 60 yards of field position, there, we get a holding penalty. He had a couple of penalties on that opening drive. So, he finished it out and [we] went with Beaux. But Hudson's a competitor. He's a competitive kid.

On Tyrone Tracy not starting and going Cam Scatteboo getting a lot of action. Where is he with the running backs?

Just game by game. Scat was running hard. I've got a lot of confidence in Tracy. He did a good job on her kickoff returns. So we've got three guys who you can use and if we think one's running pretty good or feeling it, we'll get it to him. And if not, we'll use all three of them. I have confidence in all three of those guys. And he did a good job for us on a kickoff return, today.

On how he keeps this loss from bleeding over.

You just get ready to play next week. I mean, you're going to hurt for 24 hours, that's for certain. The guys put a lot into it. They left everything out on the field. I respect them a great deal for that. Came up short. You put a lot into it. Credit to those players. You want to get the results that you hope for. Came up short. Let it sit for 24 hours and then you move on. .

On if he thinks the defensive aggression stayed with the team throughout the game.

I thought we tried to play tight coverage. Mixed in a fair amount of stunts and games this week. Again, they made some plays against man-to-man coverage, sometimes doubled. Give them credit, too. Our guys fought, just came up short.

On how much the the penalties bother a coach.

Well, I think there's kind of two types of penalties. There's jumping off sides and false starts, and then there's aggressive penalties. But I think you have to be smart, whether you're putting a guy down on the ground. I don't think Hudson tried to hit that guy. He's was kind of slipping, but he him him. After-the-fact hit the quarterback late. Again, we'll take a look at some of those and see what they are, but it's a lot of penalties that we had.

On if it's something he needs to address with them again.

Yeah, you're always addressing things, but obviously that's too many and we'll work to correct it.

On how much Russell silenced some of the critics that were out there after this week.

I don't really think Russ worrys about that, to be honest with you. I think he's done this for so long. You know it's going to come with the territory, being the quarterback in this league. It was business as usual for him during the week. He was preparing and studying, doing all the things at practice. The other stuff that comes with it, I don't he focuses on that.

On if he anticipates using Dart a little bit more next wee or is it on a game-by-game basis.

Yeah, we just got down with this one. So, we'll see where we're at.

Quarterback Russell Wilson

On what positives there are

"Anytime you lose, you know, it's tough. There's so much fight. I think that the belief in the guys that we have, the belief on the sideline…you know, there's been a lot of noise and the guys do not flinch. So I think that was the best part about the day. You know, it would have been better – there's only one thing that would have been better and that's obviously the most important thing is to win and find a way. We tried to find a way. We kept responding. We kept answering. I thought that Malik (Nabers) played an incredible game. I mean, this guy is special. The plays that he was making…Wan'Dell (Robinson) had a tremendous game. (Darius) Slayton made some big plays for us when we needed it. The line did a tremendous job giving me time. Credit those guys. You know, we needed one more play, one more moment to make a big play. Unfortunately, (Dallas) made it before we did. But I just think the fashion that we fought…you know, I love sports. I love watching greatness. I love watching people be relentless. I love watching boxing, for example…you know, we're in a 17 round fight. We battled in the first round and second round. We've got more to do. So, I was just proud of how we needed to be able to answer the way we did. I've been a part of a lot of crazy games. I don't know if I've ever been part of one that crazy with that much grit."

On if he thinks he silenced the noise with his performance today

"I think you've got to respond. That's the first thing. I don't think I know how talented I am. I know what I'm capable of. I don't need somebody to convince me of that. I don't need outside praise or criticism to convince me of what I'm capable of. It's not me. It's really just the grace of God for what's he's given me. I thank Him for the ability to be on this platform every day, every time and the highest of highest best moments and some of the tough ones. One of my favorite scriptures is James 1:2 – Consider it pure joy through the trials and tribulations. Sometimes, you go through some stuff and it's just pruning you to be a better and tougher, to have that mental toughness, to be able to be neutral amidst the praise and the criticism and all the other stuff that comes around with it. Much is given. Much is required. So, you just to keep answering the bell. I'm grateful that I have the teammates that I have, the guys that we have, this organization, the fight, the love for one another. This game meant a lot to me. It was time to answer the call."

On whether he was affected by the noise around him

"You know, I think somebody once told me the greater you're great, the more they're gonna hate. And that's something I never forget. My dad was on his deathbed and I was playing college football. I had a passer with North Carolina, NC State tell me that one day. And I was going through a lot of tough stuff, you know, my dad on his deathbed. I was playing well and I was going this and that, and everything was going. I had some of the highest moments and also some of the toughest moments personally. I will never forget he told me that. The greater you're great, the more they're going to hate. So, for me, I embraced the noise. I don't run from it. And we have to keep answering the call. Today, we didn't do enough to win. That's all that matters, is us as a team, us finding a way to win that game. We believe in the guys in this room. Defense battling. Offense battling, special teams. They laid it all on the line. You can't ask for any more effort and love, passion and energy, and work than we just gave."

On his emotions when he hit the touchdown pass to Malik Nabors with 25 seconds left

"That play by Malik was unbelievable and the line did a tremendous job getting [inaudible]. All of my emotions were just thanking God, once again, for the moment. You know, I think sometimes, you go through tough stuff for moments like that. I always think about fourth quarters, for example, you know, you get into these fourth quarter situations and moments like that. You want to be great, you gotta be able to answer. You gotta be able to find ways to win, find ways to make a big play in moments like that. So, I think that my emotions were more so just gratitude. Gratitude for what God has given me, gratitude for the moment of what he has blessed me with, and gratitude that he made that play."

On whether he thought the game was over when Malik scored that touchdown

"That could have been the dagger. It wasn't. They made some plays. We answered the call. We tried to finish it in the right fashion. Unfortunately, it didn't go our way."
