Quotes (8/12): Coach Brian Daboll, QB Russell Wilson, S Jevón Holland, DL Dexter Lawrence

Head Coach Brian Daboll

DABOLL: So I'll just cover who's not going to practice and that's about the extent of it. So (wide receiver Jalin) Hyatt, (wide receiver Da'Quan) Felton, (wide receiver Malik) Nabers, (running back Cam Skattebo) Scatt, (cornerback Tre) Hawkins III, (cornerback) Dru Phillips, and (guard Evan) Neal.

Looking forward to a good day of practice here against the Jets. Got a lot of respect from (Jets head coach Aaron) Coach Glenn and a good two days to get some good work in.

Q: Where is (tackle) Andrew Thomas?

DABOLL: Rehabbing.

Q: Did he make the trip?

DABOLL: No, he's rehabbing, getting better.

Q: How optimistic are you that he's going to be ready for week one at this point?

DABOLL: Yeah, just focused on each day like normal. He's getting better every day.

Q: What happened to Hyatt?

DABOLL: Yeah, I'm not getting into injuries.

Q: But we saw him practice the day before the game, and now he's-

DABOLL: Not able to go, so he's rehabbing.

Q: And with Malik, is it the same maintenance on his toe or something else?

DABOLL: Yeah, again, I'm not going to get into injuries, as you all know. These guys are rehabbing, and they'll be back as soon as they can.

Q: Are you concerned with Malik?

DABOLL: He's rehabbing, and he's doing everything he can do to get back.

Q: When you have these consecutive days of joint practices, do you ramp up or is both days going to have the same intensity?

DABOLL: We look forward to a good two days of practice. That's why you do these things. Get to evaluate some other guys against other guys, we've been going against each other for a number of weeks. We expect good competitive practices.

Q: Does Malik have to go for any additional tests on his toe, or is this just precautionary measures?

DABOLL: I'd say all the guys that are not here practicing are rehabbing and doing everything they can do to get back.

Q: What are you looking to see from (quarterback) Jaxson (Dart) in a joint practice environment?

DABOLL: Just to continue to improve. Be some good learning experiences like they are for every practice or every preseason game. Go out there and compete. Probably make some mistakes, learn from them, and continue to grow.

Q: How much more does Jaxson, when he's in an environment like this, get to see? I know in preseason teams like to keep it kind of on the simpler side, whereas in practice does he see more from the opposing team maybe?

DABOLL: Hey, that would be a good question for Coach Glenn. Whatever we get, go out there and execute your assignment. I'm sure there will be some mistakes. But everything, every practice, every preseason game, every joint practice is important, particularly for a young quarterback for learning reasons.

Q: Are there any challenges going right from the game on Saturday to really this is the first time you guys are back on the field? The fact that it's a joint practice, do you want to hold back a little bit today, or is it just like you were?

DABOLL: We came in, did all the stuff we needed to do the day after. Yesterday was an day off. Jump right into it. Expect good competitive practices.

Q: How much did you speak about composure with your team in joint practices? Joint practices can get overheated sometimes.

DABOLL: Yeah, we always do. We want to make sure we're practicing smart. We want to stay healthy. We want to keep the Jets healthy. We want to get something out of it. So that's always important.

Q: Is it something specific you tell the guys to avoid, try to avoid some of the extra fight stuff, or you assume that they'll handle it the right way?

DABOLL: Yeah, we don't want to do that. We don't want to do that.

Q: Do you specifically tell them that just to make it clear?

DABOLL: Yeah, we had a meeting this morning, and Coach Glenn and I have communicated I'd say a number of times throughout the past month. We have certain expectations. We need to understand it's competitive. We want to do things the right way, the best we can.

Q: You guys tackling to the ground?

DABOLL: We are not tackling to the ground.

Q: At all?

DABOLL: No. That'll be for the game.

Quarterback Russell Wilson

Q: What was your take on the day?

WILSON: It's always great to get out here and to be able to practice against other teams and just the back and forth and just learning another team as we're playing and everything else. I thought guys competed at a high level, both sides, on offense and defense for us. Obviously, they did too as well. There was a lot of good plays, some things we always can clean up with everything else, but I thought it was a great day for us, especially at the end.

Q: How do you decipher what's a sure practice offensively and what isn't? What would you call today?

WILSON: I would say, first of all, the seven-on-seven, we were pretty much lights out. Guys were on it, all the spots, locations where we want to be – that's what you really want, to make sure that we're catching and making plays and all that stuff. We thought we did a good job of that. I thought that the second period, we battled through it. They made some plays, we made some plays but I think that's part of the game. Sometimes you play games where not everything goes your way that possession and just be able to reload and go to the next possession and play the – so that's good experience too. You need that sometimes. I thought we really answered at the end. I think we had three touchdowns down there at the end and just made some big plays. I thought (wide receiver Darius Slayton) Slay having that touchdown catch, that was a big play. (Tight end) Theo (Johnson) having that touchdown catch as well, really good play by him so there was a lot of really good juice at the end.

Q: Did you have a chance to talk to (Jets quarterback) Justin (Fields)?

WILSON: Yeah, I did. I got to talk to Justin before practice a little bit, during a little bit. You know, he's a great friend, great teammate. I loved playing with him and I know he's going to have a great year.

Q: How much do you guys talk about both landing in the same market here in New York?

WILSON: We talk about it, I wouldn't say all the time but we definitely talked about it when we both decided to come to New York and just, we're grateful to be able to play this game and what we love to do. We're both tremendous competitors. He's tremendously talented and I'll always have his back and all that and vice versa.

Q: You mentioned you liked the team period late. What about early?

WILSON: That's ball. Sometimes not everything goes our way right away but I think how we responded was great. I think our resiliency throughout practice – as we talked about, the execution at the end there and just making big-time touchdowns and big plays. I loved seeing Theo get in the end zone, Slay, I think (running back Devin Singletary) Motor scored too, on that one. I thought there was a lot of good things throughout practice and we'll go back, watch the film and learn and get ready to go tomorrow. We get to go back home tomorrow and play in front of our fans, so that'll be fun too.

Q: While you're trying to build chemistry with receivers, how tough is it to not have (wide receiver) Malik (Nabers) out there on offense?

WILSON: Malik and I have gotten a lot of time together. I trust his work ethic, his ability to get open. Obviously, I've spent a lot of time with him, throwing the football. When he is out there and when he has been, we've been lights out on everything that we've done. I think he's been special for us. I love (wide receiver) Wan'Dale (Robinson), I love Slay, all the guys that we have. I'm excited to get (wide receiver) Jalin Hyatt back soon hopefully. I think that you see other guys step up. I thought guys made good plays – (wide receiver Zach Pascal) ZP, I thought (wide receiver) Beaux (Collins), Theo, as I mentioned, just everybody's kind of contributing. That's what we need. We want to facilitate the ball to the right guy at the right time. We want to be able to do that and obviously Malik's a key part to that.

Q: At one point, we saw (quarterback) Jameis (Winston) get on you guys. What is it like to have another guy get on the guys and not just you?

WILSON: Jameis and I, we both have a lot of experience, a lot of understanding of what we want to do, how we want to motivate, how we want to lead. I think that's important and me and Jameis actually, in that period were like, 'You got this one. I'll get the next one (laughs),' back and forth. You know he's got those great motivational speeches. I think that just the biggest thing is we want to come out here and compete at the highest level every time we step between the white lines so it's good to have that and it's good to have great leadership on defense too. Guys like (outside linebacker) Brian Burns, and (defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence II) Big Dex over there, all the guys that we have – (defensive lineman Rakeem Nuñez-Roches) Nacho, there's a lot of great experience.

Q: What have you told (quarterback) Jaxson (Dart) about the most valuable things you can get out of these joint practices?

WILSON: I think the biggest thing is it doesn't matter who we play. It doesn't matter if it's on air, it doesn't matter if it's another opponent. We always have to be bringing our best every day and I think we do a really good job of that.

Q: How has the dynamic between you and Justin Fields changed from not knowing each other much before to being teammates to now?

WILSON: I definitely knew him before. We'd talked several times in the past and then obviously, getting to play with each other and just be in the same room every day, it was a tremendous honor in 'the quarterback club' I guess you want to call it, it's a special one and when you get to share the room with guys and teach guys and learn and just continue to develop a relationship, I think that's special and I really admire his work ethic, admire his friendship and who we are as teammates and we'll forever be connected.

Q: You mentioned the touchdown to Theo. What has he shown you so far?

WILSON: He's doing a great job. Theo's doing an unbelievable job of just stepping up, being confident, making plays. His confidence has been continually rising and his ability is just getting better and better. I think he really knows what I want him to do and he's practicing it, he's worked at it, we're talking about it, we're working at it at walk-throughs and practice obviously, getting extra time. If you ever notice, Theo gets all this extra work on the side throughout practice and I think that's valuable work and just the dialogue – I think any time you have a great quarterback-receiver relationship, -tight end relationship, it's communication, it's vision, it's feel and it's just making plays as well.

Q: People talk about a tight end throw for a quarterback being a natural throw. They say it's natural to throw the ball to a big guy over the middle. Is that something that Theo has?

WILSON: I think when guys can run like that, make plays and get up like that like Theo can, it gives you all the confidence in the world in your guys.

Q: What's the biggest difference you've seen in Jaxson Dart when he's out there now from when he first started?

WILSON: I think he's the same guy. I think he's just learning the offense. I think he's growing every day. I think the experience of him being around us two to be able to communicate with him. There's like no secrets in the quarterback room. We always share information and I think it's important that I help him in whatever way, if he has any questions or whatever. I think he's just learning every day and I think it's fun, we're having a blast, we're all rooting for each other just to be better every day. We can continue to elevate our room, continue to elevate the team, we get better as a team. We want everybody to be great and that's what it's about.

Defensive Lineman Dexter Lawrence

Q: How was today out there for you?

LAWRENCE: It was good just to go against another team. I enjoyed it a lot. I think there's a lot to improve on, obviously, to get ready for week one, but that's the process that we're in right now. You have to keep growing.

Q: I saw you run down (Jets quarterback Justin) Fields out of bounds…

LAWRENCE: Yeah, I'm the fastest (laughs).

Q: Did you see from the pass rush today what you expected to see?

LAWRENCE: Me personally?

Q: Your team.

LAWRENCE: Oh, the team. I think we did well. Like I said, we're still learning how to communicate with different things, and learning who's rushing beside you, and just honing in on your technique more. We have a few more weeks to get that down, but I think we just keep getting better and progressing every day.

Q: Where is the defense at, in your opinion? The progression?

LAWRENCE: We're in training camp (laughs). I mean, that's the best way I can answer that. We only had a few plays on Saturday, so I don't know what this week looks like, but that's why we have to take these practices seriously. Every day I see improvement. Guys are not making the same mistakes all the way around, so that's the best thing you can ask for right now.

Q: How do you guys evaluate a joint practice? Let's say it could be a sack on a play, but it's a catch on the back end. How do you guys evaluate the work?

LAWRENCE: I think during these times, obviously it's a team, but it's a lot of individual work. You evaluate yourself one-on-one, and then everybody else evaluates themselves one-on-one, and that's how you make a team. You're all doing your job the right way. I think during these times, it's making sure you're doing your keys right, you're on top of your technique, and communicating well, obviously, and that's how the team is supposed to perform.

Q: You count everything as a sack in meetings?

LAWRENCE: Oh, for sure (laughs).

Q: What makes (outside linebacker Brian) Burns a special pass rusher?

LAWRENCE: I think his game is unlimited, honestly. He can speed rush you. He can power you. He can finesse you. He's not a little guy either, so he's got a lot to his game. He's tapped into it more this training camp, and that's good to see.

Q: How valuable is this (joint practice) for some of the young guys, just to see what they can do?

LAWRENCE: Super, because you obviously have to play on Saturday, but during these runs right here, you see how your practice flow is. I think whatever you do in practice, you're going to do in a game, so you've got to practice hard to play well.

Q: Where are you as far as football shape? We're not used to seeing you limited. You really haven't done a ton in camp. How are you feeling?

LAWRENCE: I'm where I'm supposed to be. That's just what I can say about that. It's just a process of me and my elbow. It's a continual process. I'm getting better every day. I got a lot more reps today than I got last week, and I'm feeling good, so that's the process when you've got to keep going.

Q: Just managing the reps at this point?

LAWRENCE: Yeah.

Q: You meant the schedule based on the plan you set forth in the offseason?

LAWRENCE: Yeah.

Q: I know you didn't go against them today, but how different does the offense look to you guys when you go against them?

LAWRENCE: I think they looked smooth and confident and that's the best you can ask for. The offensive line played well on Saturday, obviously, and you can see their improvement every day. Like I've been saying, every individual on this team, we have to do our one job. Everybody has to make sure that myself is doing the right technique, knowing the plays, helping a teammate, and leading. Everybody can lead. During these times, it's building the individual to become a team.

Q: You've already gone through one of these. How do you measure whether the defense had a good day? How did you guys feel like you did today?

LAWRENCE: Not letting up a lot of big plays. Being in a good position and communicating well. Make sure guys lined up well. D-line knows what we have to do up front, and I think that's the biggest thing.

Q: It's hard to judge because you're not fully tackling the guys, but did you feel like the run defense had a particularly good day?

LAWRENCE: Yeah, I would say. I think we played well in the run. We were physical. We got knock back, and that's the best thing you can ask. Yeah, so I think so.

Q: From our perspective at least, some people thought it looked like you guys clearly won your end, defensive settlement or how you felt about it.

LAWRENCE: We have to respond tomorrow, honestly. Greatness and being a great team, you got to be consistent. We did well today. We have to go do well tomorrow because they're going to have a fire in them tomorrow. Then we got to do well on Saturday. It's all about that progression each day, each day just growing and getting better. By Sunday, we should be ready to play these guys. Saturday.

Q: How much does it fire you up? You go into the full team, and (quarterback) Russ (Wilson) and the offense go touchdown, touchdown, touchdown. How are you reacting when you're on the sideline watching that?

LAWRENCE: It's special. It feels good to put points on the board, and that's what you want your offense to do. We got to stop them from scoring. That's part of the game. You have to score points, so it's exciting to see.

Q: As a competitor, what's it like when you see a team three times in a week between tomorrow, Saturday, and today?

LAWRENCE: Like I said earlier, just every day being consistent. Can we consistently grow? Even if we had a good day, can we have another good day? Then have another good day. That's how teams become special.

Q: Dex, I just wanted to ask about, you talk a lot about (outside linebacker) Abdul (Carter), you talk a lot about (quarterback) Jaxson (Dart), what sort of progression are you seeing from (defensive lineman) Darius (Alexander)?

LAWRENCE: He's growing a lot, honestly. He's a willing learner. He's humble. I like his attitude. He comes out here. Whatever Coach Dre (defensive line coach Andre Patterson) or I say to him, he corrects it the next day. I love the way he responds to adversity. B-Cox (assistant defensive line coach Bryan Cox) is on him hard, but he's got a good head on his shoulders, and you can see him keep growing every day.

Q: I know he's not in your room, and we kind of ask this every time, but what do you see when you look at what Abdul's doing out there so far the last few weeks?

LAWRENCE: I don't know yet. We'll see. We'll see. We'll see with him (laughs).

Safety Jevón Holland

Q: I guess no freebies, so you punched that one out. Really wasn't even a completion, didn't give him much time. What was the tone for the defense in the team drills, do you think?

HOLLAND: Man, just come out and execute. We are out here against another color, another team, but at the end of the day, it's practice. We're trying to work on what we're trying to work on and improve. We've got to get out of the day, what (Jets head coach Aaron Glenn) Coach Glenn said, which was protection and growth. So, I think we did that today. I think we grew in a lot of areas. I think it being hot, kind of more inland, kind of got on us coming out the off day. I think that we're going to do a good job tomorrow by fighting that. But yeah, I think today was a good day.

Q: Pretty good spirit overall, do you think, for a Giants-Jets type practice like this?

HOLLAND: I mean, this is my first one, so I pretty much have no idea. But you know me, I was with the Dolphins for the last couple years, so seeing Jets, I was a little, you know what I'm saying, enemy territory (laughs). Nah, but it was cool, man, it was cool, it was chill.

Q: I know you're on the back end, obviously, but it looked like up front exactly how you guys were advertised. I mean, (outside linebacker Brian) Burns was chasing the fields all over the field, it looked like today from the jump. When you're in the back and the play is ending, do you realize that those guys are kind of exerting their will?

HOLLAND: If the play doesn't necessarily go their way, then yeah, I'm like, what happened? Kind of thing, and I would look. But if I'm not in a vision type of coverage, then I'm really focused on the job at hand, you know what I'm saying? You can feel the ball being sped up and whatnot, but you don't really get it until we're in the game and stuff like that, when things are live.

Q: Do you feel your defense is kind of coming together as a group?

HOLLAND: Yeah, I mean, I think so, I would hope so, otherwise we're not going to win a lot of games if we don't. We are definitely taking steps together and growing, steadily improving.
