ABDUL-CARTER-STORYLINES

The New York Giants return to MetLife Stadium for their second consecutive home game as they take on the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4.

Playing through last weekend's nor'easter, the Giants gutted out a 12-7 victory over the Titans, sealing the game with Jevón Holland's third interception of the season in the final seconds of the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals put up a good fight in last week's matchup against the 49ers. Despite a comeback effort in the second half, Arizona ended up losing the divisional matchup, 36-30, marking their second straight loss to an NFC West opponent.

The Giants will be honoring the franchise's 1986 Super Bowl championship team on Sunday, which includes the team wearing their Legacy Blue uniforms.

Here are storylines to watch in the Week 4 matchup.

'We're going to keep growing'

It may not have been pretty, but the Giants found a way to a 12-7 victory over the Titans in Week 3. The Giants finished the contest with just 238 total yards of offense as they played in harsh weather conditions.

In his first start since Jaxson Dart's injury, Jameis Winston completed 14 of 22 passes for 118 yards and added 14 yards on two rush attempts. More importantly, the veteran quarterback did not turn the ball over as the Giants made sure to win the field possession battle throughout all four quarters. The offense is still adjusting to the loss of Dart, and the head coach is confident the unit will continue to grow.

"We're going to find ourselves," coach John Harbaugh told the media Monday. "I mean, we won the game. We did what we had to do to win the game and that's what we had to do. And I think Jameis did all the things as a quarterback that we needed to do to win that game, but that doesn't mean that's where we stand. We're going to keep growing. There's going to be new challenges in front of us.

"He's not going to be coming into a game kind of out of the blue, so to speak. Or is he going to be coming into a nor'easter every single week going forward here. So, I'm looking forward to seeing where we go and we'll build around. As we go too, we'll get a chance to build around Jameis' strengths, all that kind of stuff. So, I feel good about it."

'Big challenge' to replace Burns

For the second consecutive week, the Giants lost a key contributor to a season-ending injury. Less than a week after quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a knee injury that will force him to miss the remainder of the regular season, outside linebacker Brian Burns, who battled through an ankle injury to suit up in Week 3, tore his ACL. The veteran edge rusher is set to have surgery.

"Big challenge for us," Harbaugh said about the injury. "I mean, not just a great player, which he is. I mean, in many ways the leader of the defense, I would say, just as a veteran leader and star player, also a worker, out front kind of guy in everything he does. Just, you hate to see it. I mean, and really for him, too. I mean, he was just such a rock for us.

"Just a tough deal, but it's one we've got to deal with. So, again, you feel it. It hurts emotionally. You feel it more for the player even than for the team. But the team is resilient. The team, the next guy will step up. We'll have to grow stronger. You kind of grow over the wound. You heal the wound, you grow over it, you scar up, and you move on. And we're not the only team that faces losses or will face losses. And the fact that there's been, yeah, we've got our quarterback one week and probably our top defensive player, you might say, the next week is shocking. But you've got to overcome the shock, and you've got to get ready to play the next game and find a way to win the next game. That's what we'll be doing as a team."

The Giants entered the season with solid depth at outside linebacker, which is going to come in handy following Burns' injury. Kayvon Thibodeaux will now step into an elevated role as he joins Abdul Carter as the starting edge rushers, and the defense is going to need both of them to step up in Week 4. Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett has completed 66 of 84 passes (78.6 percent) for 501 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions for a 107.4 passer rating when not pressured. However, those numbers drop to 16 of 33 (48.5 percent) for 151 yards, zero touchdowns, one interception and a 48.9 passer rating when facing pressure.

"What we just need to do is get on track up front in terms of the pass rush," Harbaugh said. "I mean, I think they're doing a really good job. All those guys have done a very good job against the run. We've been pretty darn consistent against the run. We've had a few runs against us in the second half of the last two games that we aren't happy about. But generally, we've been a good run defense. And we want to keep building on that. But we need to get to the quarterback more. ... We've got to keep finding ways to get the quarterback on the ground. And those two guys, obviously, are going to be a massive, massive part of that going forward."

Scouting the Cardinals

The Cardinals opened up their season with a 26-14 victory on the road against the Chargers. They then faced back-to-back divisional matchups, which started with a 31-7 loss at home against the Seahawks and was followed by a close 36-30 defeat against the 49ers in San Francisco.

Outside of their game in Seattle against the defending Super Bowl champions, the Cardinals are averaging 28 points in their other two contests, led by a strong start to the season by Jacoby Brissett. The veteran quarterback has completed 70.1 percent of his passes for four touchdowns, one interception and a 91.5 passer rating. However, he's thrown for just 652 yards on his 117 attempts, with his 5.6 yards per attempt ranking last among quarterbacks that have started all three games this season.

Brissett's top option in the passing game is Trey McBride, one of the NFL's elite tight ends. McBride leads the team with 26 receptions for 211 yards and two touchdowns, while his 26 receptions are the most of any tight end in the league. Not too far behind McBride in the pecking order is wide receiver Michael Wilson, who is coming off his best game of the season. In last week's loss to the 49ers, Wilson had a whopping 17 targets, of which he caught 11 for 89 yards and his first touchdown of the season. Wilson saw double digit targets in five of the last eight games of last season, all of which featured Brissett at quarterback.

Speaking of breakout games, the Cardinals got one from their newest offensive weapon. Arizona spent the third overall pick in this year's draft on running back Jeremiyah Love, and after an ankle injury suffered during the preseason led to a bit of a slow start, the rookie finally got going in Week 3. Love set new career-highs with 21 rush attempts for 90 yards and added five receptions for 19 yards and a touchdown.

"Hard to tackle. Fast. Tough," Harbaugh said about what he saw from the rookie running back in the pre-draft process. "Had great hands. Could line up as a wide receiver. Good in pass protection. Impossible to tackle, it seemed like. We're going to have to really bring our tackling abilities. Not just him. They've got another back, number 22 (Tyler Allgeier), who is really hard to tackle too. He's different. He's downhill, physical. They're running duo. They're running kind of what you saw with the Rams offense, is really what the Cardinals are doing, not surprisingly. And they've got backs who are like hitting it. Double team offensive line. Play actions off of that. We've got to do better than we did out in L.A."

The Cardinals have done a good job of protecting the football through the first three weeks of the season. Arizona has just one turnover in three games, which is tied with three other teams for the fewest in the NFL. They haven't even put the football on the ground, as they enter Week 4 with zero fumbles on the season.

Roster & injury updates

The Giants have made a series of roster moves this week as they prepare for Sunday's game. It began on Monday with the trade for Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy, which sent a 2027 fifth-round pick back to Minnesota. After missing his entire rookie campaign due to a knee injury, McCarthy started 10 games last season and led the Vikings to a 6-4 record. He threw for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions and added 181 yards and an additional four scores on the ground.

Brian Burns was placed on injured reserve due to the torn ACL he suffered in Week 3, which opened up a roster spot. The team also released veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., which opened up a second. The two spots were filled with two wide receivers from the practice squad, starting with Braxton Berrios.

Berrios was out of elevations after being added to the active roster in each of the first three weeks of the season. He has yet to catch a pass this season, but he has returned five kickoffs for 138 yards (27.6 avg.) along with two punts for 12 yards (6.0 avg.). The other open roster spot was filled by Charlie Jones, who had spent the previous three seasons with the Bengals. Jones has played in 33 games and has totaled eight receptions for 69 yards, but made a big impact on special teams. Jones returned 50 punts for 462 yards (9.2 avg.) and a touchdown, along with 47 kickoffs for 1,284 yards (27.3 avg.) and another two touchdowns.

Two moves were also made on the practice squad. Defensive lineman P.J. Mustipher was added, while quarterback Jake Haener, who was waived on Monday, was also signed back to the practice squad.

The Giants had two players miss Wednesday's practice – offensive tackle Andrew Thomas (groin) and running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. (knee). Harbaugh said he believes Thomas, who was listed on the injury report last week, "should be fine."

As for Tracy, Harbaugh said he doesn't "think it's going to be serious. We'll see. We'll know more. It's just kind of a day-to-day thing."
