Arvell Reese named Rookie & Defensive Player of the Week by PFF

It didn't take long for Arvell Reese to introduce himself to the rest of the NFL.

One week after the No. 5 overall pick racked up 13 total tackles (10 solo), one tackle for loss and a pass defensed against the Titans, Reese followed that up with an even more dominant outing against the Cardinals.

The 22-year-old has been named both the Rookie of the Week and the Defensive Player of the Week by Pro Football Focus following his standout performance in Week 4.

"Reese had the best combination of PFF grade and defensive production in the league this week," wrote PFF's Gordon McGuinness. "He earned a 90.5 PFF grade, tied for seventh-best among defensive players, and he made an impact as a run defender, in coverage and as a pass-rusher. He generated a pressure and batted down one pass, along with another that he tipped at the line of scrimmage (though the ball still found its way downfield). Reese also recorded five defensive stops and the first interception of his NFL career."

The rookie linebacker has looked like a seasoned veteran over the last two weeks. He recorded nine solo tackles against the Cardinals, which gives him a league-leading 27 solo tackles on the season.

On top of that, he caught his first career interception, one of three passes defensed, and picked up a tackle for loss while also pressuring Jacoby Brissett on the throw that led to Greg Newsome II's interception.

Reese became the first Giants rookie since tackles were first officially tracked in 1994 to record nine tackles, three passes defensed and an interception in a game, and is only the third rookie in the NFL to do so since 2010 (and the first linebacker).

"He was all over the field again," coach John Harbaugh said after the game. "He played great. I could have given him, he may get a game ball yet for defensive player of the game. I don't know, but he had an interception, had numerous, numerous tackles again. He has really taken off."

Reese wasn't the only Giant to be recognized by PFF.

Also featured on the PFF Team of the Week was cornerback Deonte Banks.

Of course, Banks made the biggest play of the day with his interception that he returned 98 yards as time expired to seal the victory for the Giants. But that was only one of Banks' four pass breakups on the day.

The fourth-year corner was targeted nine times in coverage, according to PFF, and allowed just three receptions for 19 yards. This earned him a passer rating against of just 42.4.

Two of Banks' passes defensed came when the defense needed it most, as he broke up a pass intended for Cardinals tight end Trey McBride on the play before his game-winning interception.
