Blake Martinez chosen as Giants' most improved player this season

The Giants made several splashes in free agency this offseason, including the signing of inside linebacker Blake Martinez.

Martinez has been one of the most consistent tacklers in the NFL over the last three seasons. Since 2017, Martinez leads the league with 443 total tackles while starting in all 48 regular season games for the Packers. The linebacker was the NFL's tackling co-leader in 2017 when he recorded 144 tackles.

In 2019, Martinez registered 155 total tackles (97 solo), three sacks, five tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, one interception, two passes defended and one forced fumble.

The former fourth-round pick should bring some stability to the middle of the Giants defense, serving as the anchor of the linebacker corps.

NFL Network’s analytics expert Cynthia Frelund chose one member from each team who she believes, using her forward-looking data models, will see an "uptick in 2020 based on their performance trajectory and the scheme they'll be playing in this season."

As Frelund writes, "Next Gen Stats shows that, as a Packer last season, Martinez made a tackle on 15.8 percent of his snaps (third-highest rate in the NFL among those with a minimum of 500 defensive snaps). The Giants' defense, especially in the middle, will rely on Martinez's effective play, likely requiring him to make even more tackles than the Packers' defense required of him last season."

NFL Network's 'The Top 100 Players of 2020' premieres Sunday

For the 10th consecutive year, current NFL players have voted to determine the Top 100 players in the league.

‘The Top 100 Players of 2020’ countdown begins Sunday night. NFL Network will reveal each player on the list with three, one-hour episodes airing each night from 8:00 to 11:00pm through Tuesday.

The top 10 players on the list will be announced in a special two-hour episode Wednesday at 8:00pm.

Giants star running back Saquon Barkley was voted No. 16 on last year's top 100 list following his superb rookie season in which he totaled over 2,000 yards from scrimmage and 15 touchdowns on his way to taking home the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year award.
