With the 218th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the New York Giants selected Minnesota linebacker Carter Coughlin.

2019 • SENIOR SEASON: Started all 13 games • recorded 49 tackles (29 solo), including a team lead 9.5 for loss and 4.5 sacks • forced two fumbles and recovered one. Game-by-Game: Started against South Dakota State and recorded three tackles • tallied two tackles including a sack for a nine yard loss against Fresno State • forced one fumble and notched six tackles against Georgia Southern • broke up two passes and registered five tackles against Purdue • made three tackles and assisted on a tackle for loss • recorded three tackles and one sack against Nebraska • forced one fumble, broke up two passes, recorded four tackles including 1.5 for loss and assisted on a sack against Rutgers • disrupted Penn State with a career high eight tackles, three tackles for loss and one sack • assisted on a tackle for loss against Iowa • registered six tackles including one for a loss at Northwestern • recovered one fumble and made one tackle against Wisconsin • recorded five tackles against Auburn in the Outback Bowl.

Game-by-Game: Started against New Mexico State and notched two tackles including one for a loss • recorded four tackles including 1.5 for loss • tallied three tackles including two sacks for a loss of 15 yards • notched two tackles and one sack against Maryland • forced one fumble, recorded a sack and tallied four tackles against Iowa • registered seven tackles including three for loss, two sacks and forced one fumble against Ohio State • recorded one sack against Nebraska • forced a fumble against Indiana to seal the victory on top of recording six tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack • notched three tackles including two for loss at Illinois • recorded three tackles against Purdue • tallied five tackles against Northwestern • forced one fumble and added six tackles including one for a loss including a half a sack against Wisconsin • tallied two tackles in Quick Lane Bowl victory over Georgia Tech.

2017 • SOPHOMORE SEASON: Started all 12 games • recorded 37 tackles including a team leading 11.5 for a loss and 6.5 sacks. Game-by-Game: Started and made one tackle against Buffalo and tallied two tackles including one for a loss against Oregon State • notched one tackle for a loss of five yards against Middle Tennessee • recorded one tackle for a loss against Maryland • notched five tackles including 2.5 and 1.5 sacks • made four tackles including one for a loss against Michigan State • tallied four tackles including two sacks against Illinois • made four tackles against Iowa • recorded one tackle at Michigan • registered eight tackles and one sack against Nebraska • notched three tackles including two for a loss against Northwestern • tallied three tackles against Wisconsin.

2016 • FRESHMAN SEASON: Played in 11 games and started one • made 25 tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks. Game-by-Game: Made collegiate debut against Indiana State and recorded his first career tackle • made his first career start against Colorado State and tallied six tackles • saw action against Iowa • registered five tackles against Maryland • made one tackle against Rutgers and notched three tackles against Illinois • recorded one tackle against Purdue and competed against Nebraska • recorded his first career sack and had two tackles against Northwestern • had half of a sack against Wisconsin • tallied four tackles and one sack against Washington State.

HIGH SCHOOL: Attended Eden Prairie High School • three-year letterwinner played both on the defensive line and at linebacker for the Eagles, who ranked No. 3 in the state • compiled an 11-1 mark and a 9-0 record in conference play in 2015 • named Associated Press First Team All-State • played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl for the East squad • guided team to two state titles and held a 40-game winning streak • paced a defense that allowed only 16.9 points per game during senior season • as a senior, totaled 35 tackles, including 7.0 tackles-for-loss, two pass breakups and one fumble recovery • also added six carries for 27 yards and two touchdowns and one reception for 46 yards and a score • as a junior, forced and recovered a fumble en route to leading a defense to allow only 13.9 points per game and have a perfect 13-0 season • as a sophomore, paced the team to a 12-0 mark and the defense allowed just 12.7 points per game • coached by Mike Grant • ranked as a four-star prospect by Rivals, Scout, ESPN and 247Sports • Rivals, Scout, ESPN and 247Sports listed him as the No. 1 prospect in the state • Scout rated him as the No. 1 outside linebacker in the state and Midwest region, No. 4 outside linebacker in the nation and No. 51 overall prospect • Rivals tabbed him as the No. 8 linebacker in the country and No. 82 prospect overall • ESPN ranked him as the No. 12 inside linebacker, No. 25 overall prospect in the region and a member of the ESPN 300 • 247Sports ranked him as the No. 9 outside linebacker and No. 92 overall prospect • also lettered in basketball.

PERSONAL: Son of Robert and Jennie Coughlin • has two brothers (Quinn and Cullen) and two sisters (Kaiden and Callie) • father, Robert, played football for the Gophers from 1986-90 and was a two-year letterwinner • mother, Jennie (Moe), played tennis for Minnesota from 1989-92 and was a three-time all-conference selection and two-time team MVP • she is in the top-5 in program history for singles wins (92) and doubles victories (89) • grandfather, Tom Moe, lettered for the Gophers from 1957-59 and later served as interim athletic director for the Maroon and Gold for three years (1999-2002) • uncle, Mike Moe, lettered for the Gophers in the 1980s.
