East Rutherford, NJ – The New York Giants have selected Coach Derrick Sheets of Manchester High School in Connecticut as the High School Girls Flag Football Coach of the Week for week 2 of the 2026 season.

The High School Girls Flag Football Coach of the Week Award is part of the Giants' continuing effort to support local high school flag football programs. Each week during the high school girls flag football season, the Giants will select one area high school head coach as the Coach of the Week winner. The selection is based on the coach's continuing commitment towards promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes and contributing overall to their community.

In recognition of Coach Derrick Sheets selection as Coach of the Week, a $2,000 check from The Giants Foundation will be given to Manchester High School girls flag football program. Coach Sheets will also receive a certificate of recognition signed by Giants Head Coach John Harbaugh and will be honored at a 2026 Giants preseason home game.

Coach Sheets has served as the high school girls flag football coach at Manchester High School since the program was created in 2024. After completing their first season, the Red Hawks came back in 2025 on a mission to compete for the first ever CIAC high school girls flag football championship. With a dominant regular season, they carried that momentum into the post-season and were crowned as the inaugural Connecticut high school girls flag football state champion after an overtime victory over East Windsor High School.

In addition to coaching the high school girls flag football team, Sheets coached tackle football for 8 years and he started his coaching career in the Manchester Pop Warner League. Sheets' passion for coaching is fueled by his two children Derrick Sheets Jr and Iyana Sheets who are both multi-sport athletes. Iyana is currently the quarterback of the flag football team and followed in her brother's footsteps last year by bringing a state championship to Manchester High School just 12 weeks after Derrick Jr. did in basketball. Whether it is high school, recreation or youth sports, Coach Sheets is always looking to develop his athletes into great teammates, competitors and members of the community.

"Coach Sheets has been an invaluable part of our flag football program, consistently demonstrating dedication, leadership, and a genuine passion for developing our student athletes," said Enrique Lugo, Assistant Athletic Director at Manchester High School. "His ability to connect with players, teach fundamentals, and create a positive, competitive, and safe environment has played a major role in the program's growth and success. Beyond the field, Coach Sheets consistently goes above and beyond. Whether it is organizing practices, supporting athletes off the field, or contributing to the growth of our program. His leadership and dedication to the sport and his athletes have made a lasting impact, helping to establish a strong foundation and culture for continued success."
