East Rutherford, NJ – The New York Giants have selected Coach David Shaw of Waverly High School in Waverly, NY as the High School Girls Flag Football Coach of the Week for week 7 of the 2026 season.
The High School Girls Flag Football Coach of the Week Award is part of the Giants' continuing effort to support local high school flag football programs. Each week during the high school girls flag football season, the Giants will select one area high school head coach as the Coach of the Week winner. The selection is based on the coach's continuing commitment towards promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes, and contributing overall to their community.
In recognition of Coach Shaw selection as Coach of the Week, a $2,000 check from The Giants Foundation will be given to the Waverly High School girls flag football program. Coach Shaw will also receive a certificate of recognition signed by Giants Head Coach John Harbaugh and will be honored at a 2026 Giants preseason home game.
Coach Shaw has led the Waverly Wolverines since the program started back in 2023 when they became one of the first high schools to offer girls flag football in Section IV of New York State. Since their inception, they have been contenders for the sectional championship in each season they have played. Coach Shaw, alongside coaches Peyton Miller and Chad Rylott, has created a program ingrained in the fundamentals of flag on both sides of the ball. Not only are the Wolverines 10-2 on the season, but they have also held their opponents to 18 points or less in each game while averaging 28 points scored per game. Under Coach Shaw and his staff's leadership this season, the team has dominated the offensive side of the ball with over 1,800 receiving yards, 1,420 rushing yards, 34 receiving touchdowns and 17 rushing touchdowns, all above the national average. The defense is just as competitive with 18 interceptions, along with 24 sacks and an average of 28 flag pulls per game.
Coach Shaw and the Wolverines most recently secured their first divisional championship with their first ever win over Owego Free Academy with a 31-14 victory. Their sights are set on continuing their dominance throughout the regular season with hopes of making a deep run in the state tournament. In addition to leading a dominant team on the field, Coach Shaw and his staff have cultivated a program that instills confidence, teamwork, and humility in each of their student-athletes. They have provided young women with an opportunity to play a sport that they love with a chance to learn life lessons while competing at a high level on a daily basis.
"The flag football program has given our students another opportunity to engage with each other as teammates and continue their growth as young adults, said Dr. Eric Knolles, Waverly Central School District Superintendent. "David and his team have put in countless hours to create something special for our students."
