JAXSON RETURNS

The Giants received some good news on Thanksgiving Day. After playing the last two weeks without their starting quarterback, the team announced Thursday that Jaxson Dart cleared the concussion protocol. Interim head coach Mike Kafka confirmed on Friday that Dart will start this week's primetime game against the Patriots on Monday Night Football.

"I'm ready," Dart said about returning. "I've been waiting for it. Obviously, these primetime games are ones that you have circled on your calendar. So, excited to go out there, go compete at a high level and do everything in my power to rally these guys, to put our team in the best situation when the clock hits zero that we're going to come out with a win."

The Giants have averaged 24.2 points per game in the six full games Dart has started, which spread across the whole season would rank just outside the top 10. The 22-year-old has played a crucial role in the Giants scoring 20+ points in seven straight games, tied for the second-longest streak in a season by a Giants team since 2000.

In his seven starts, Dart has accounted for 17 total touchdowns (10 passing, seven rushing) with just five turnovers (three interceptions, two fumbles lost). The rookie has earned a 93.5 passer rating while throwing for 1,417 yards and adding another 317 yards on the ground, with an average of 5.6 yards per carry.

ALL-TIME SERIES

The New York Giants (2-10) will travel to Foxborough to face the Patriots (10-2) on Monday, December 1, at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8:15 pm ET on ESPN.

Monday night's game will be the 15th all-time meeting between the two teams, with the Giants trailing the series, 5-7. They own a 3-3 record on the road.

The Giants' won their most recent meeting with the Patriots on November 26, 2023, by a score of 10-7.

BULLEN TAKES OVER AS DC

Kafka made a significant shakeup to the coaching staff on Monday with the dismissal of defensive coordinator Shane Bowen. Outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen will take Bowen's place for the remainder of the season. The move came after the defense surrendered an average of 31.7 points during the six-game losing streak.

"It's a player-driven league, there's no doubt and coming from my perspective, coming from my position room where there's three first rounders, I understand fully that it's a talent-driven league and a player-driven league," Bullen said Friday on what the defense might look like with him at the helm. "So to me, as a coach, my philosophy is always players over plays, and how can we as coaches, even as a position coach, maximize our players' abilities and put them in position to have success - A, for themselves, maximizing what they're good at, but then also defensively it helps us.

"If we're putting (Brian) Burns in advantageous situations or Dex (Lawrence) in advantageous situations or (Jevón) Holland, that helps us. I'd say at this point it's hard to wholesale change. Not that I'd do that anyway, but we've got years and months of time on task in this scheme. And so, I don't think it's something you can change completely. I think we can tweak and alter, but as best I can, I just want to put these guys in position to succeed so that their skill sets are maximized and they can play as fast as possible."

While this will be his first time serving as a defensive play-caller, Bullen brings a lot of experience to the role. He has coached for 18 years, including 12 seasons in the NFL, and has learned under some of the league's top defensive minds. Between his stints with the Dolphins (2012-18) and Cardinals (2019-22), Bullen spent time learning under Vance Joseph and Matt Burke, both of whom currently lead two of the league's top defensive units in Denver and Houston, respectively.

"Charlie's done a really nice job of getting everyone together, getting everyone on the same page," Kafka said on Wednesday. "Really a couple of good walkthroughs yesterday and today. And just talking with the staff and just the kind of cohesion of how the responsibilities are kind of being spread out. It's been pretty cool to see. And Charlie's doing a nice job leading that group."

CONTAINING DRAKE MAYE

Drake Maye has played a significant role in the Patriots' dramatic turnaround from last year. One season after going 4-13 with a bottom 3 offense in both points and yards, Maye has lead New England to a league-best 10-2 record, the No. 1 seed in the AFC and a top 8 offense in points and yards.

Through the first 12 games of this season, the second-year quarterback leads the NFL with 3,130 passing yards and a 71.0 completion percentage, while his 21 passing touchdowns rank fourth and his 110.7 passer rating is the third-highest in the league. Maye has also added 307 yards and an additional two touchdowns on the ground as he's firmly planted himself in the MVP conversation.

"Drake's been very impressive in year two," said Kafka. "You saw him make that jump. He's operating at a high level. He's creating explosives, things that we saw on tape. And sure, we enjoyed watching him on tape, and he's doing a nice job for them, and I think it's really cool to see him play that well."

Maye has thrown just one touchdown pass in each of the last two games, but this came after a stretch of five consecutive games with multiple touchdown passes. In last week's win over the Bengals, he completed 62.9 percent of his passes for 294 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Maye has also taken only one sack in each of his last three games, but was sacked six times in both Weeks 8 and 9. His 37 sacks taken are the sixth-most in the NFL, and the Patriots will now likely be without their starting left tackle (Will Campbell) and left guard (Jared Wilson) on Monday after both linemen suffered injuries in last week's win.

PLAYER TO WATCH

TE Theo Johnson – Johnson put together another strong performance last week in Detroit, catching three passes for a career-high 77 yards. The second-year tight end made some impressive catches, including his first one where he jumped up and caught the ball at the high point for a big gain. He has shown a noticeable improvement with his contested catch ability this season, which was on full display in Detroit. Johnson now has 188 receiving yards over the last three games, which ranks third among tight ends and 15th among all players across the league.

MATCHUP TO WATCH

LT Andrew Thomas vs. OLB K'Lavon Chaisson – Thomas has allowed just one sack and two quick pressures this season, according to Next Gen Stats. His 0.3 percent sack rate is the third-lowest among left tackles, while his 0.6 percent quick pressure rate is second-lowest. Thomas has an average time to pressure of 3.91 seconds, which is the longest time to pressure by any left tackle since at least 2018. Chaisson, who has played 88.0 percent of his snaps on the right edge, has produced a 15.2 pressure rate and 5.9 percent quick pressure rate, both of which rank 17th among 77 edge rushers with 150+ pass rushes.

PATRIOT TO WATCH

RB TreVeyon Henderson – Over the last four games since taking over as the lead back, Henderson has averaged 5.1 yards per carry, up from his mark of 4.3 yards per carry from Weeks 1-8. Over two-thirds of his runs during this stretch have gone to the strong side of the formation, which has led to four touchdowns and 14 forced missed tackles, both of which are tied for the most in the NFL, along with an average of 4.9 yards after contact (third-most), on such runs. On rushes to the strong side, the Giants have allowed 6.7 yards per carry, 2.1 yards before contact, and 4.6 yards after contact, all of which are the most in the NFL.

STATS TO KNOW

Dart has five games with one or more passing touchdowns and one or more rushing touchdowns, tied with Buffalo's Josh Allen for the most in the NFL. The only rookie with more such games in NFL history was Cam Newton, who had eight back in 2011 which led to him being named AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. On the other sideline, Maye joined Hall of Famer Dan Marino as the only QBs with an 80+ passer rating and a win in nine consecutive games prior to age 24, according to NFL Research. Lamar Jackson totaled eight such games in a row in 2019 during the season he was named MVP.
