Instant Analysis: Giants defeat Eagles, 34-17, on Thursday Night Football

CORDALE-FLOTT

AT A GLANCE

Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo are starting some streaks of their own. The rookie quarterback, making his first primetime start, threw and ran for a touchdown while his running back punched in three more scores in a 34-17 victory over the Eagles on Thursday night at MetLife Stadium. The Giants, who have won back-to-back home games, are now 2-4. The Eagles dropped their second game in a row after a 4-0 start.

UP NEXT

The Giants (2-4) will see the Eagles (4-2) again in 17 days at Lincoln Financial Field. But first, they will travel to Denver in Week 7 to face the Broncos, who take a 3-2 record into Sunday's game against the Jets in London.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE OFFENSE

After making his first NFL start in Week 4 – and then his first road start four days ago – Jaxson Dart debuted on primetime against a divisional foe. The rookie is now 3-for-3 in orchestrating opening-drive touchdowns as a starter. He capped off the first of Thursday's with a 20-yard scramble into the end zone. Three plays earlier, he kept it alive with a 34-yard jump ball on third-and-12 to Lil'Jordan Humphrey, a veteran wide receiver who was elevated from the practice squad with Darius Slayton (hamstring) ruled out and Malik Nabers already on injured reserve.

Dart finished 16 of 24 for 187 yards and a touchdown. He also had 13 rushing attempts for 58 yards and a score.

More importantly, the Giants did not turn the ball over. On Sunday, they had five turnovers on five consecutive drives, leading to a loss to the Saints.

The Giants converted 11 of 16 third downs and scored touchdowns on all three trips to the red zone.

Dart and Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes are the only quarterbacks since at least 1991 to lead their team to an opening-drive TD in each of their first three career starts.

Dart joined Philadelphia's Jalen Hurts and Baltimore's Lamar Jackson as the only quarterbacks with at least 50 rushing yards in each of their first three starts in the Super Bowl era.

Dart left the game briefly after being sacked by Patrick Johnson with 2:17 left in the third quarter. He was evaluated for a concussion and ultimately cleared protocol. Russell Wilson entered the game for two plays. He handed the ball off once and then threw an incomplete pass intended for wide receiver Jalin Hyatt. The Giants were forced to punt while holding a 27-17 lead at the time. Dart returned for their next drive.

Just like on Sunday in New Orleans, the Giants scored on their first two possessions and jumped out to a double-digit lead on a 35-yard catch-and-run touchdown by Wan'Dale Robinson, the only healthy starting wide receiver from the season opener.

Robinson led the team with 84 receiving yards on six catches. Humphrey had the most targets (eight) with four catches for 55 yards.

The Giants scored 13 points in the first quarter, their most since having 14 to start a Week 5 game at Dallas in 2020.

Running back Cam Skattebo, who entered Week 6 ranked fifth among all NFL rookies in yards from scrimmage, stopped a 14-0 run by the Eagles with a four-yard touchdown with 1:19 left in the second quarter. The fourth-round draft choice found the end zone two more times and now has five rushing touchdowns on the season.

Hyatt caught his first three passes of the season for 17 yards on Thursday. He also drew a key 21-yard passing interference penalty in the end zone, setting up Skattebo's third touchdown that extended the Giants' lead to 34-17 with 9:41 left in the game.

Running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. returned to action for the first time since he suffered a shoulder injury in a Sunday night game against the Chiefs in Week 3. He had four carries for six yards.

Right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor was cleared to play despite being limited throughout the shortened week due to a back injury. He kept intact an offensive line that has now started the same five players for the fourth consecutive week (left tackle Andrew Thomas started Week 3 but played only 28 snaps in his first game back). The group faced an Eagles front that did not include Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jalen Carter, who was added late to the injury report with a heel issue and did not play.

Center John Michael Schmitz left with 9:36 left in the third quarter due to a nose injury. He was also evaluated for a concussion and ruled out. Austin Schlottmann took his place.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE DEFENSE

Cor'Dale Flott delivered the defensive play of the game. The fifth-year pro, who had been in a cornerback competition with Deonte Banks, intercepted Jalen Hurts inside the Giants 10-yard line and returned it 68 yards. It turned the tables on a drive that could have potentially cut the Eagles' deficit to one possession. Instead, the Giants scored a touchdown right after it to take a 17-point lead.

The Giants forced takeaways on consecutive Eagles drives. Cornerback Dru Phillips recovered a fumble on the second one, which was forced out of AJ Dillon's grasp by safety Dane Belton.

The Giants held the Eagles to just 1-for-9 on third downs.

A week after the Giants registered only one quarterback hit, Brian Burns sacked Jalen Hurts twice. Both came on third downs and forced Philadelphia to punt. The outside linebacker now has seven sacks in six games to the start the season. He enters Sunday's slate of games tied for the NFL lead.

Saquon Barkley ran for just 30 yards last week; the running back eclipsed that mark on the Eagles' first two plays from scrimmage. The former Giant finished with 58 yards on 12 carries. They held the Eagles to 73 rushing yards overall, the fewest they have allowed all season.

Hurts scored the Eagles' second touchdown after four straight tush push plays as they briefly retook the lead midway through the second quarter.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT SPECIAL TEAMS

The Giants signed kicker Jude McAtamney to the active roster ahead of Week 6. He had been elevated from the practice squad for each of the past two games after Graham Gano was placed on injured reserve. Heading into Thursday night, McAtamney had made both of his field goal attempts (long of 31 yards) in addition to three extra points. On Thursday night, however, he missed his second extra point attempt wide right.

Punter Jamie Gillan once again handled kickoff duties, but his first attempt fell short of the landing zone. The ball was placed on the 40-yard line and the Eagles went on to kick a field goal on their first drive. Gillan also punted twice and had two downed inside the 20.

Gunner Olszewski, who was once an All-Pro return specialist with the Patriots, set up the Giants' second touchdown drive with a 37-yard kickoff return.
