Jaxson Dart to make first NFL start in Week 4 vs. Chargers

JAXSON-DART

Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart will make his first NFL start this Sunday in the New York Giants' Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Chargers at MetLife Stadium.

Quarterback Russell Wilson had started the first three games for the Giants while Jameis Winston served as the emergency third quarterback. Both veterans signed with the Giants this offseason.

Speaking to the media before Wednesday's practice, coach Brian Daboll said Wilson will serve as the backup to Dart.

The change comes as the Giants search for their first win of the season. The Chargers, meanwhile, enter the matchup with an unbeaten 3-0 record.

Dart, the 25th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, has played six total snaps in two games this season. After not appearing in the season opener, the 6-foot-2, 223-pound Dart made his NFL debut a week later with 12:51 left in a game that had the Cowboys leading 20-16. From the Dallas 25, Dart handed the ball off to Cam Skattebo, who broke a 24-yard run. Dart appeared in two more snaps against the Cowboys and three more on Sunday Night Football against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Dart has yet to attempt a pass in a regular-season game.

The Ole Miss product excelled in the preseason, completing 32 of 47 passes for 372 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions (113.1 passer rating). He also rushed six times for 52 yards and another touchdown while the Giants scored more than 30 points in three consecutive preseason games for the first time in franchise history.

Dart is the first and only quarterback drafted under general manager Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll, who took over in 2022.

Dart will be the eighth quarterback in that span to attempt a pass for the Giants and the seventh different one to start a game.

Dart was the third quarterback in Ole Miss history to be taken in the first round. The others were Eli and Archie Manning. Dart broke Eli's program record for career passing yards, finishing with 10,617 to eclipse the two-time Super Bowl MVP's 10,119 in college. Dart also owns Ole Miss records in wins (28) and winning percentage (.737) by a starting quarterback.

Like Eli, Dart was part of a draft-day trade. Unlike Eli, he was officially drafted by the Giants. The Giants received the 25th pick from the Texans in exchange for their 34th and 99th selections and a 2026 third-round choice.

In three games this season, Wilson completed 65 of 110 passes (59.1 percent) for 778 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
