Morehead State names football stadium after Phil Simms

Phil Simms put together an illustrious career with the Giants.

His accomplishments include being named the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXI after setting the record for highest completion percentage (88 percent) and highest passer rating (150.9) in Super Bowl history, marks that still stand today.

Prior to the Giants selecting him with the seventh overall pick in the 1979 NFL Draft, Simms attended Morehead State, where he was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year in 1977.

Morehead State honored Simms this past weekend at their 2025 Homecoming, where they officially changed the name of their football stadium to Phil Simms Stadium.

"If I had to name my 10 to 15 closest friends in life, they would all be from here," Simms said during the ceremony. "I can never get the words that really capture everything I want you to know... I'm a part of Morehead State, the school, the town and of course the football team."

Simms played at Morehead State from 1975-1978 and lettered all four years for the Eagles. In addition to being named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year in 1977, he was also named first-team All-OVC that season.

He finished his collegiate career with 5,545 passing yards and 32 touchdowns, and was inducted into the Morehead State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995.

"Few people, if anyone, have brought as much recognition to Morehead State University as Phil Simms." Director of Athletics Kelly Wells said. "Not every school can say they have a Super Bowl MVP in their alumni family, but MSU can. Since his time here, Phil has dedicated time and resources to continuing the support of the Blue and Gold. He hosts camps in the summertime, visits with our coaching staff and athletes, and made Morehead State a priority in his life."

On top of all of the work Simms has done for the MSU community over the last few decades, as Wells noted above, the legendary quarterback also returned to campus in 2015 to complete his degree. Upon completion, the school awarded him an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree to recognize his lifetime of service to the university.

"Phil Simms embodies the spirit of Morehead State," MSU President Jay Morgan added. "His story is one of perseverance, excellence, and loyalty. This stadium naming is a tribute to his impact on our campus and beyond."
