Possible opponents for Giants on Super Wild Card Weekend

CCNY

The New York Giants are in. Now where do they go?

With a commanding 38-10 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in a win-and-in situation last week, the franchise clinched a playoff berth in the first season under coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. It will be the Giants' first trip to the postseason since 2016, when they finished 11-5 and secured the fifth seed as a wild card. The 2022 Giants hold the sixth spot in the seven-team NFC playoff field and will play on the road at the third seed.

Here's a look at the NFC standings of the nine teams who have either clinched or remain alive (No. 1 seed gets a bye):

  1. Philadelphia Eagles* (13-3)
  2. Minnesota Vikings**(13-4)
  3. San Francisco 49ers** (12-4)
  4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers** (8-9)
  5. Dallas Cowboys* (12-4)
  6. New York Giants* (9-6-1)
  7. Seattle Seahawks (8-8)
  8. Detroit Lions (8-8)
  9. Green Bay Packers (8-8)

Depending on what happens, the Giants could make a return trip to Minneapolis this winter and play the Vikings, who clinched the NFC North title. They have met three times in the postseason with the Giants winning in the 1993 wild card round and, of course, the 41-point shutout in the 2000 NFC Championship Game. They met just eight days ago at U.S. Bank Stadium, where Greg Joseph made a 61-yard field goal as time expired to beat the Giants 27-24. No team has played more one-possession games this season than the Giants and Vikings.

If the 49ers get the third seed, they would add another chapter to their storied history. The Giants and 49ers have split eight postseason games against each other, meeting four times in the divisional round and twice in the wild card round. More famously, they have also met twice in the NFC Championship Game. The Giants won both penultimate games en route to Super Bowls XXV and XLVI. Overall, the Giants have defeated the 49ers in the playoffs in three of their four Super Bowl championship runs.
