Practice Report (6/12): Notes from the sideline

ABDUL-CARTER-BOBS

The Giants hit the field for their 9th OTA on Thursday. It felt like training camp with temperatures hitting the low 90s by the end of practice under bright sunny skies.

* Practice mostly focused on plays in the high red zone and began, as is typical, with 7-on-7 work. Russell Wilson threw the first touchdown of practice on the second play, hitting Darius Slayton with a touch pass over the top of the cornerback on the left sideline. Wilson's ability to put the proper elevation and touch on his passes on deep balls or even on shorter fades has been excellent. On the next play, Wllson hit Wan'Dale Robinson on a slant, and he had a chance to run in for a score.

* Jaxson Dart showed his own touch in the high red zone, layering a throw over the cornerback to tight end Daniel Bellinger for a touchdown toward the left sideline. Dart knows how to put the appropriate pace on the ball depending on the pass. Jameis Winston completed a touchdown pass to Dante Miller on a wheel route on the right side of the field later in 7-on-7's.

* In the team periods, Tommy DeVito squeezed in a throw through traffic to Dalen Cambre in the middle of the field for a touchdown. Dart hit undrafted free agent Da'Quan Felton on a fade route for a touchdown. Later, Winston threw a beautiful touch pass to Cambre for at least a 35-yard gain on a deep flag route.

* The defense made its fair share of plays during team drills. Linebacker Darius Muasau got into the backfield to flush the quarterback out of the pocket where Micah McFadden tracked him down. One of the two players would have had a sack. Abdul Carter darted past the center with a quick move for a what would have been a sack. Brian Burns got into the backfield for a pair of would-be sacks and batted a pass down at the line of scrimmage. Chauncey Gholston batted a pass of his own, shut down a screen pass well and got into the backfield multiple times. Raheem Layne and Trace Ford had potential sacks, and on another play, Cor'Dale Flott, Gholston and Elijah Chatman were all around the quarterback. Carter and Dru Phillps also got around the quarterback on two other plays.

* The secondary got its hands on the football during the team portion of practice, too. TJ Moore knocked a pass away. Dane Belton deflected a pass into the air, but tight end Theo Johnson snagged the ball for a touchdown. The best play on the ball actually came from the front, when Ford batted a pass into the air, which came down into the arms of defensive lineman Cory Durden for an interception.

* Jude McAatamney had a chance to show off his kicking leg, making three of four from 50+ yards, including one from 58 yards away. In the final period of practice, the team worked on completing a quick pass and rushing the field goal unit on for a kick before time expired. They did get the kicker on the field and the kick off before the clock hit zero.

* Jameis Winston closed practice with a touchdown pass on a slant to Beaux Collins.
