Sidelines Notes

Sideline notes: Offense storms back on Day 2

Minicamp practice No. 2 took place Wednesday at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. In addition to several of the players who were held out of drills on Tuesday, wide receiver Sterling Shepard missed practice with a wrist injury, safety Jabrill Peppers had a dental procedure, and cornerback Sam Beal missed due to personal reasons. Outside linebacker Markus Golden was back working with the first team and left tackle Nate Solder, rehabbing from an ankle procedure, was on a bike on the side.

Here's what I saw from the sideline:

*Wednesday's practice was dominated by the offense, and it started early during the first competitive session of practice called "half-line pass drills." Instead of one-on-one passing drills, only half of the field is active at a time with limited players on any given play. Eli Manning had a good day, and it started with a perfect deep post to Corey Coleman. Coleman caught the ball in stride. Manning later hit wide receiver Bennie Fowler on a perfect slant for a touchdown during red-zone drills.

*Later on in half-line, Daniel Jones unleashed a perfect deep ball down the left sideline to Bennie Fowler. In the last team session of practice, Jones, for the second straight day, threw a perfect deep fade to the outside shoulder of Darius Slayton down the sideline. Slayton also had a great leaping touchdown grab in the back corner of the end zone, reaching up to bring in the pass from Jones and getting his feet down. Later on, he caught a perfect slant from Jones with room to run and not much between him and the end zone. Slayton is getting consistent separation and finishing plays. His speed is apparent. Slayton, Fowler and Coleman all took advantage of Sterling Shepard not being on the field and had productive days.

*Alex Tanney got into the mix at the end of the period, hitting rookie tight end C.J. Conrad on a deep ball over the middle. Conrad also scored a touchdown during red-zone drills on a blown coverage and had a great one-handed catch reaching towards the sideline. Rhett Ellison also caught what could have been a deep touchdown from Eli Manning when he got wide open in the back of the defense. He also had a nice leaping catch in the back of the end zone during the red zone period on a nicely thrown fade pass from Manning, just over safety Michael Thomas. Tight end Scott Simonson also made a great leaping catch, going up and getting a short pass from Jones.

*Kyle Lauletta had his first work in team drills as he comes back from a knee procedure. His first rep in red zone drills started with a shotgun snap that he bobbled. He managed to handle the ball, roll out to the right and hit Alonzo Russell for a touchdown.

*I heard some Saquon Barkley chatter at one point during practice. He bounced a run outside right to DeAndre Baker, who did what you are supposed to do in an unpadded practice, and faked a tackle attempt. As Barkley walked back to the huddle, he turned and said, "You better be ready to tackle me on that, Bake." We are starting to see more and more of his leadership come to the forefront.

*Barkley also flashed his multidimensional skillset later in practice when he was motioned into the slot and was isolated on an inside route against Lorenzo Carter. He got open easily and Manning hit him on what could have turned into a big gain on a run after the catch.

*On defense, safety Michael Thomas was around the ball, including stripping Reggie White Jr. after a catch down the field. He also anticipated a short pass on play action to Conrad that would have been a big hit.

*Rookie Oshane Ximines continues to show off his athleticism as a pass rusher. I'm anxious to see Ximines in training camp and see him produce in a more physical environment.
