Special Teams Coordinator Tom Quinn Interview

Q: What happened on the returns in New England?A: It was too sloppy. The ball cannot be on the ground.

Q: Why were there so many muffed kicks on Sunday?A: With us, it was just poor technique. I don't know about them.

Q: How do you feel about D.J. Ware handling kickoff returns?A: He did it for us last year so I have confidence in him and Da'Rel is someone we have been working with since day one. We will see how it plays out the rest of the week.

Q: How frustrating was it?A: It was very frustrating. With Aaron, the play before was blocked up pretty well and we saw the pictures on the sidelines. He has to trust his instincts back there. It is a hard enough job back there and the thing I always tell him is to trust his instincts because he will make the right decision. He was a little out of his element and took his eyes off a little longer than normal. He wasn't in position to make the catch.

Q: Do you think he was too excited?A: I think so. I think he saw pictures on the sidelines and that is why we try not to show the returner the pictures.

Q: How happy were you with Steve Weatherford's punts?A: It was good. It was good to see us punt, protect and cover to help the team with field position. I think the offense did a nice job of driving and we punted it and the defense played. We never gave in and we forced them to punt from backed up. They hadn't done that much until that point. It was good to contribute that way too.

Q: How has Da'Rel Scott looked in the return game?A: He is fast so you would like to put the ball in his hands at some point. (D.J.), Da'Rel and Devin have to be ready because you know how this league is with injuries and everything else. We will have it all ready.

Q: Why did Jernigan get to run one kick back?A: We had planned to do that. We thought that he ran well and Devin ran well. It just happened that it was the return that he was called in. That was how it was laid out. Jerrel is a guy we want to see run the ball and Da'Rel is a guy too so we have been working them in and getting them to a point where Jerrel can be the punt returner and Da'Rel can be the kick returner. We haven't gotten to that point yet so we will work with them and see.
