EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants today added both skill and experience to their offensive backfield when they signed Jonathan Stewart, who spent his first 10 NFL seasons with the Carolina Panthers.

In Charlotte, Stewart worked with Giants general manager Dave Gettleman and offensive coordinator Mike Shula.

"I am very pleased that we were able to make Jonathan a New York Football Giant," said Gettleman. "He is a quality runner with power and speed and brings a veteran, professional presence to our locker room. He's a terrific addition for us at this time."

Orleans Darkwa, the Giants' leading rusher in 2017, is a free agent, as is Shane Vereen. The team also has Wayne Gallman, who ran for 476 yards as a rookie last season, and third-year man Paul Perkins.

Stewart is the Panthers' career rushing leader with 7,318 yards and 1,699 carries. His 51 rushing touchdowns rank second in team history to quarterback Cam Newton's 54, and his 58 total scores are second to wide receiver Steve Smith's 75.

Stewart rushed for a career-high 1,133 yards in 2009, when he teamed with DeAngelo Williams (1,117) to become the first set of teammates in NFL history to each rush for more than 1,100 yards.

In addition to his rushing totals, Stewart has caught 162 passes for 1,295 yards and seven touchdowns. In 2011, he set Panthers records for catches (47) and receiving yards (413) in a season by a running back.

The 5-10, 240-pound Stewart was a 2015 Pro Bowler.

Stewart has played in 131 regular-season games with 64 starts. He has also played in seven postseason games with six starts. His playoff totals include 101 carries for 474 yards and five touchdowns, plus nine catches for 49 yards. His one-yard run accounted for the Panthers' only touchdown in their 24-10 Super Bowl 50 loss to the Denver Broncos.

In 2017, Stewart played in 15 games with 10 starts. He rushed for 680 yards and six touchdowns on 198 attempts, and added eight receptions for 52 yards and a score. Stewart ran for a season-high 110 yards on 17 carries against Miami on Nov. 13. Four weeks later, he rushed for 103 yards, including a season-long 60-yard touchdown, in a victory against eventual NFC finalist Minnesota.

On Dec. 27, 2009, Stewart compiled career-high totals of 28 carries and 206 yards and scored a touchdown in the Giants' final game in Giants Stadium. Stewart has 18 100-yard games, and that was the only one against the Giants. He has a 5.9-yard per-carry average in three games vs. the Giants.

Stewart was the 13th overall selection in the 2008 NFL draft after leaving the University of Oregon following his junior season. At Oregon, he played in 36 games with 25 starts and ranks second in school history with 2,891 rushing yards on 516 attempts. He ran for 27 touchdowns.
