Shrine Bowl Report (1/25): Action from Frisco

SHRINE-BOWL-ZERO

Day 3 of Shrine Bowl practice is in the books from the Dallas Cowboys' practice facility in Frisco, Texas. Here's what I saw on the practice field:

Day 3 of Senior Bowl practice is in the books, with the East team putting together a high-intensity practice while the West Team ran more of a walkthrough. Here's what I saw today and what people are talking about from the weekend of practices.

* It was a strong group of tight ends at the East-West Shrine Bowl this season. Both Notre Dame tight end Eli Raridon (6'5 and Ÿ inches, 244 lbs,, 32 inch arms) and Texas' Jack Endries (6'4 and 1/8 inches, 244 lbs., 31.5 inch arms) did not practice on Sunday, but both were impressive as two-way tight ends in the two days they did practice. Raridon showed off that the Notre Dame tradition of tight ends is continuing.

* With both those players out on Sunday, it gave an opportunity for USC tight end Lake McRee (6'3 and 5/8 inches, 251 pounds) to step up and be a big part of the passing game. He was a constant target and showed off good hands as he caught several short passes throughout practice. Like Raridon and Endries, he is a traditional in-line Y tight end.

* A few linebackers made plays throughout the three days of practice. For the second straight day, Louisiana-Lafayette linebacker Jaden Dugger had an interception during team drills. At 6'4 and 5/8 inches and 240 pounds with massive 34 and 7/8 inch arms, he has shown to be athletic enough to cover and physical enough to support against the run.

* LSU linebacker Harold Perkins is a man in search of a position. Measuring at 6 foot and 3/8 inches and only 222 pounds, he lined up as an off-ball linebacker and on Sunday he took turns as an edge rusher, which is a position he played more earlier in his college career. He played "Star" linebacker in his final year at LSU.

* Two defensive tackles continue to impress. Texas A&M's Tyler Onyedim is a classic, penetrating 3-technique at 6'3 and 3/8 inches, 290 lbs., and 34 and a quarter inch arms. He has been in the backfield constantly this weekend, using his burst and quickness to slash past offensive linemen. Navy defensive tackle Landon Robinson had a big day on Sunday, disrupting team drills for the offense by quickly getting into the backfield. He is undersized at 5'11 and a quarter inch and 291 pounds, but is an explosive athlete that can penetrate.

* His teammate Eli Heidenreich has been fun to watch. He is part third down back, part slot wide receiver at 5'11 and a quarter inch and 197 pounds. His quickness stands out, and he has had his way with linebackers and safeties in pass catching one-on-one situations.

* Demond Claiborne only had a half practice before an injury on a diving catch took him out of practice. He told us in an interview (find it on the Giants official podcast network feed) that it's not serious. He is going to be one of the fastest players at running back at 5'9 and a quarter inches and 187 pounds.

* Running back CJ Donaldson would be a good running back to pair with Claiborne or Heidenreich. He was the short yardage hammer compliment to Bo Jackson at Ohio State and showed more skills than that throughout practice.

* East Carolina's Anthony Smith built on his first day of practice with a one-handed catch on Sunday. Montana's Michael Wortham also caught a deep pass down the sideline. Iowa's Kaden Wetjen had another big day with a lot of catches.

* Weather permitting, we will fly out to Mobile on Monday to cover the Senior Bowl. There is an inch of ice on the ground here but that's nothing compared to the tri-state area. Stay safe everyone!
