Thursday was the final day of practice at the Senior Bowl in Mobile before the game on Saturday It was the nicest day of the three with sunny skies and temperatures in the fifties when the sun was out.
* The defenses once again got the better of the offenses in both of Thursday's practices, which has been a pattern for most of the week. It reflects a draft class that's strength is on the defensive front and linebacker spots. Those units continued to excel at practice on Thursday.
* Pittsburgh linebacker Kyle Louis was a one-man wrecking crew on Thursday, continuing his strong play from earlier in the week. He had another interception to add to his picks earlier in the week, coming away with the ball in one-on-ones when he undercut an out-route. He had two other pass breakups and forced another incompletion by putting a big hit on a receiver over the middle. He also had a goal line stop to prevent a score. Louis was an excellent college football player, but teams are going to have to figure out where to play him at 5'11 and ¾ inches and only 224 pounds with 32 inch arms. His strength is in space and in coverage where he can use his athleticism, but he will have to prove he can take on offensive linemen and be a thumper in the run game.
* His teammate on the National Team, Oregon linebacker Bryce Boettcher, was also impressive all week. Unlike Louis, Boettcher was a hard hitter around the line of scrimmage, punishing running backs and receivers that went over the middle. He forced at least one fumble and recovered another. At 6'0 and 7/8 inches and only 227 pounds with 31 and 5/8 inch arms, Boettcher plays bigger than his size. He does not play nearly as well in space as Louis, but his instincts to read and react the offensive play and quickly insert in the right area to make key spots was impressive.
* Oklahoma linebacker Owen Heinecke had a similar impact on the National Team on Thursday. At 6'1 and 1/8 inches and 224 pounds with 30 and 3/8 arms, he was all over the field, knocking away a pass and ranging to the sideline to track down a running back. He also got into the backfield for a tackle for loss. Like Louis, he is not the biggest player and probably fits as an old school 4-3 weakside linebacker that doesn't have to take on blockers, but that position isn't used by a lot of teams in the modern NFL with nickel becoming a common base defense.
* Jacob Rodriguez is another linebacker to watch. A thumper out of Texas Tech, he was physical coming down hill most of the week at 6'1 and 1/8 inches and 233 pounds with 31 and 1/8 inch arms.
* The tight end group in this year's draft is strong and those players took center stage today. The group has a mix of "F" flex tight ends and true in-line "Y" tight ends. All five tight ends on the American team scored touchdowns. Alabama's Joshua Cuevas is more of a flex tight end and an excellent athlete. Ohio State's Will Kacmarek is a traditional in-line people-mover with some receiving skills.
* On the National Team, Texas A&M's Nate Boerkircher played well all week and is a good in-line tight end at 6'4 and 7/8 inches, 247 pounds with 32 and ¾ inch arms. He showed excellent hands and the ability to make plays down the field, as well. Houston Tanner Koziol is more of a receiving tight end with a slender build at 6'6 and a half inch and 245 pounds. He made a great jumping catch in the corner of the end zone for a score on Thursday. I spoke to him earlier in the week (an interview you can hear only on the long, consolidated Senior Bowl interview episode on the Giants Huddle podcast feed – it is not on the videos so go and subscribe!) and he said most teams told him this week he needs to prove he is a willing and effective blocker.
* It is always difficult to figure out how well running backs are playing in practices where players are not tackling to the ground, but Arkansas' Mike Washington Jr. drew my attention. He was the second fastest timed American player through the first two days of practice despite standing at 6'0 and a half inch and weighing 228 pounds. He found the hole quickly and burst through it, scoring two touchdowns on Thursday.
* The National practice was particular physical with the sounds of cracking pads and helmets filling the stadium on a number of plays. Big Clemson running back Adam Randall (6'2 and 5/8 inches, 233 pounds) ran over cornerback Jalen McMurray to score a touchdown. Kentucky running back Seth McGowan caught a touchdown pass from Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson.
* Southern Methodist tight end Matthew Hibner caught a tough seam pass over the middle in traffic for a big gain. Syracuse tight end Dan Villari had a pair of touchdowns in team red zone drills.
*T.J. Parker continued to get pressure on the quarterback with his bull rush. Zane Durant also blasted into the backfield during team drills for a sack. Iowa defensive lineman Max Llewellyn had a tackle for loss in the run game.
* TCU safety Bud Clark intercepted a pass from Robertson, ranging over from his safety position to grab a ball that hung in the air too long. North Carolina cornerback Thaddeus Dixon had a bounce back day grabbing an interception of his own.
* In the American practice, Stanford cornerback Collin Wright had a pass break-up in red zone drills. Gabe Jacas continued to get pressure off the edge. Oklahoma's Gracen Halton, Arkansas' Cameron Ball and especially Alabama's Tim Keenan III all got pressure up the middle from defensive tackle. Tyreak Sapp also had a potential sack. Michigan defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny had a tackle for loss, while Michigan's Derrick Moore and Missouri's Zion Young continued to get pressure off the edge.
* In the secondary, Texas safety Michael Taaffe had a pass breakup while Oregon State safety Skyler Thomas had an interception on pass thrown with way too much hangtime.
* Wide receivers Ted Hurst and Lewis Bond continued to get open in the secondary.
* I haven't written about the quarterbacks much because I like to see them get a week of work to get acclimated to the playbooks and their teams. Garrett Nussmeier probably looked like the best quarterback here, and he did lead a two minute drill to set up a field goal at the end of practice, but he was still inconsistent on his third day of practice. Arkansas' Taylen Green has the most intriguing physical tools of the group at 6'6 and 229 pounds with excellent speed and a big time arm, but there's still some development that has to take place as a passer. Vanderbilt's Diego Pavia looks just as short as his measured 5'9 and 7/8 inches height.
