Practice Report (1/24): Latest from Shrine Bowl

SHRINE-BOWL-ZERO

Day 2 of Shrine Bowl practice is in the books from the Dallas Cowboys' practice facility in Frisco, Texas. Here's what I saw on the practice field:

Day 2 of practices at the East-West Shrine Bowl is in the books. I turned my focus towards the wide receivers and cornerbacks in today's session.

* West practice began at 8:15 and my eyes kept getting drawn to Iowa return specialist and slot wide receiver Kaden Wetjen. At just under 5'9 and 195 pounds, he is very twitchy and consistently gets open. He also has sure-hands catching kicks and punts. He had the lone receiving touchdown during a lengthy red zone period during team drills, catching a quick out from the slot just beyond the pylon.

* Cincinnati's Jeff Caldwell hasn't made a ton of catches, but it is hard not to notice him. He is big (6'4 and Ÿ inches, 208 pounds) and showed the speed to run by defensive backs. He has long strides and displayed the ability to separate down the field. He also had a nice catch on a crossing route during one-on-ones.

* Georgia Tech slot wide receiver Eric Rivers (5'9 and Ÿ inches, 179 pounds) has been consistently getting open, as he is very sudden coming out of his breaks. He caught a number of passes during one-on-one drills.

* Houston running back Dean Connors made a nice catch over the top, beating the coverage during one-on-one drills. East Carolina wide receiver Anthony Smith caught a deep ball after running a slant and go to get by the defender. He showed excellent quickness on his routes. UConn wide receiver Skyler Bell did not practice after injuring himself on the first day of practice.

* During team drills, Maryland safety Jalen Huskey had a pair of pass breakups and was quick to come down on some short passes, breaking quickly on the ball.

* USC linebacker Eric Gentry was all over the place during practice. He put big hits on running backs and receivers going over the middle and stuffed a runner for a tackle for loss during red zone drills. He is not your typical linebacker from a body perspective, as he is a very lanky 6'6 and 3/8 inches and 221 pounds with 35 inch arms, but he was around the ball all morning.

* During East practice, three Georgia wide receivers took center stage. Noah Thomas drew the most attention due to his size (6'4 and 5/8 inches, 200 lbs) and that he was wearing a plain white helmet, unlike his two Georgia teammates. He made a number of catches showing off his length. His teammates Colbie Young and Dillon Bell also made some catches during the morning practice. Bell is only six feet tall, but he is a physical player at 212 pounds.

* A few defensive backs stood out from the East team. Toledo cornerback Avery Smith had a pass breakup after having several the previous day. He is sticky in his coverage at 5'10 and 3/8 inches and 195 pounds. UNC cornerback Marcus Allen also played good coverage on a deep ball, even though it was caught, after he broke up a pass in Friday's practice.

* NC State safety Devon Marshall had an interception during one-on-ones, undercutting a crosser over the middle. Louisiana Lafayette linebacker Jaden Dugger also had a pick in the middle of the field during team drills. He has flashed during the first two days of practice.
