CB Charles James gets locker promotion

In some lines of work, a promotion gets you to a higher floor or maybe moves you from a cubicle to a corner office.

For a practice squad player on a football team, it means having your locker closer to Victor Cruz.

Charles James is moving on up.

The undrafted rookie cornerback walked into work today only to find his gear missing from the corner of the football-shaped locker room at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center, where the eight members of the practice squad are traditionally situated.

Fearing he was possibly part of a prank – or worse – he later found his belongings in a stall further down the curved row of lockers, in between defensive tackles Mike Patterson and Johnathan Hankins and a couple down from Cruz.

"I just walked in, I was looking for my stuff and I was like, 'Where is it at?'" James said Thursday. "I thought it was in the training room somewhere, but then I saw it was down here. Everybody was like, 'Congratulations, you got your locker moved.'

"It's my first day right here. I've got Hank and Mike P and Cruz, so it's all good."

The relocation didn't reflect the actual timing of the promotion, which came on Oct. 5 when he was signed off the practice squad. James made his NFL debut a day later against the Philadelphia Eagles and recorded his first tackle the next Thursday night in Chicago.

Now he and the Giants prepare for a primetime matchup against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night at MetLife Stadium.

"Of course, that's a step up," the Charleston Southern product said. "Like my whole life, it's always at the bottom and you've just got to work your way up. I wouldn't have it any [other] way than to just work for it."
