Preseason Week 2 Tracker: Latest news, notes & roster moves

JOHN-HARBAUGH

Follow the road to the 2026 season with our latest updates from 1925 Giants Drive.

Monday, August 17

4:35 p.m. -- Last Thursday, WR Malik Nabers participated in team drills for the first time this year. He made it two in a row on Monday and took it a step further with a handful of catches during competitive periods, including a leaping grab.

"I'm feeling good," he said after practice. "Caught a couple. After that, went and ran some more routes with the training staff … to keep my legs running, keep the same thing moving forward to getting more team reps."

Nabers opened up about the rehab process, which began with a season-ending knee injury last September.

"My soul has been dead for so long, just being away and knowing what I could accomplish, knowing where I was before this happened," said Nabers, who set the franchise's single-season reception record as a rookie. "But every tear, every talk with the family, every down day, every day that I didn't complete something, it just kept that in the back of my head and continued. Even when flexion wasn't going well, my leg wasn't feeling the best, just continue to just praise God, knowing that everything was going to be all right. Continue to listen to the trainers. Every day is not going to be the best day possible. I'm not going to feel better in one day. Just continue to take it step by step, day by day and the finished product was just all those days and all those days that I felt good. I continue to push more. So, I'm just thankful for where I'm at. Thankful for all the people that have been in my corner through this and that's really all."

4:30 p.m. -- The Giants signed QB Jake Haener and LB Chandler Martin. In a corresponding move, they waived/injured RB Dante Miller.

Originally a fourth-round draft pick by the Saints in 2023, the 6-foot-1, 200-pound Haener has appeared in eight NFL games and made one start in Week 15 of the 2024 season.

He signed with the Chiefs this past February and was released three months later.

Haener's career numbers include 18 completions on 39 attempts for 226 yards with one touchdown and an interception. He also has 11 rushing attempts for 22 yards.

Prior to the NFL, Haener played two seasons at Washington and spent the remainder of his college career at Fresno State, where he set the school record for career completion percentage (68.1). Haener was named MVP of the 2023 Senior Bowl.

He was a captain in all three seasons with the Bulldogs and won 21 of his 29 starts. A two-time All-Mountain West selection, Haener ranks in the top five for every major passing statistic in program history.

His passing yards in 2021 marked just the fourth time a Fresno State player surpassed 4,000 yards, joining former Giants quarterback David Carr and his brother Derek as the only Bulldogs to do so.

Martin, meanwhile, started his NFL career with John Harbaugh's Ravens last year as an undrafted rookie out of Memphis. He appeared in three games while spending time on and off the team's practice squad.

Miller has been with the Giants since 2024, appearing in two games as a rookie. Miller had five carries for 14 yards and returned three kickoffs for 69 yards (long of 25 yards) in Saturday's preseason opener against the Vikings before he suffered an injury.

The Giants had another opening on the roster after DB Sam Webb was placed on the reserve/retired list less than a week after signing with the team.

Sunday, August 16

3:02 p.m. -- Coach John Harbaugh said they "might have a situation" with RB Dante Miller and "a soft tissue, groin-type thing. We'll see how that turns out today."

Harbaugh spoke to reports via video conference the day after the preseason opener. He said the Giants will alternate shells and pads this week. They will have the pads on for Thursday's joint practice in Miami before their preseason game on Saturday.

2:23 p.m. -- DB Sam Webb was placed on the reserve/retired list less than a week after he signed with the Giants. Undrafted out of Missouri Western State in 2022, Webb has played in 36 games with five starts for the Raiders (2022, 2024), Panthers (2023), and Browns (2025).

Saturday, August 15

1 p.m. -- QB Jaxson Dart and most of the first-team offense started in Saturday's preseason opener against the Vikings. The first play was a handoff to RB Cam Skattebo, who took it for a four-yard gain in his first game since suffering a serious ankle injury on Oct. 26, 2025. Skattebo finished with four carries for 19 yards.

"I was excited about it because I thought I saw the Cam Skattebo that you guys all know and saw last year," Harbaugh said. "So, I don't know that he's 100% twitchy and explosive yet, but he's getting there. He's come a long way in the last two, three weeks."

"It was great to have him back out there," Dart said. "The energy that he brings; his physicality. His will just all around brings a lot of positive and tough energy into our huddle. So, not only was I happy to have him back out there, but I was just happy for him. I know recoveries of injuries are tough. So, when you have the opportunity to be out there on the field, you take advantage of it, and I thought he did."

Dart's day included three completions on four pass attempts for 26 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown to rookie wide receiver Malachi Fields.

"That was a big thing that I love about Malachi's tape coming out (of college) – was his ability to go make contested catches," Dart said. "I feel like he's a player that regardless of what route that he's on, just from his range and stature and his ability to have really good hands that he's never really out of a play. And he loves the game, he competes through the whistle. You see that in the way that not only he runs his routes but also the way that he blocks, so I think he's just been doing what he's been doing and I have a ton of faith in him."

The score came on the second drive of the game, which included a brief cameo by Jameis Winston to start the second quarter while Dart was evaluated for a concussion after he took a big hit on a sack. The Giants moved into scoring position on a 40-yard catch-and-run by running back Devin Singletary on a pass from Winston, before Dart was cleared and re-entered the game and threw the touchdown.

"They got reps in a game, which they're not going to get until the first game if you don't play them in the preseason," John Harbaugh said of playing starters. "It's different. They played their whole starting defense. We played about half our starting defense to start the game. So, I decided not to play some of those starting defensive guys for that reason. I thought that they would benefit more from not playing. They played their whole starting defense. I think we played all of our starting offense, except for our left tackle and I felt like he didn't need it. He would be fine. But felt like the other guys playing together was important, especially with Jaxson out there. And our quarterback got two – got, I don't know, 10, 15 plays out there of good football. So, he's going to be that much better for the regular season that he would have been if he hadn't played those games. And we got out of it healthy. So, it worked."

Fields, a third-round pick out of Notre Dame, caught all three of his targets for 34 yards (11.3 yards per catch), including the score.

Rookie LB Jack Kelly, a sixth-round pick from BYU, led the team with five total tackles (two solo).
