10 things to watch in Giants vs. Broncos

THE NEXT TEST

The Giants picked up one of their biggest wins in recent memory last week. With the reigning Super Bowl champion Eagles coming to town for a primetime matchup on Thursday Night Football, the Giants defeated their division rivals, 34-17, led by strong performances from rookies Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo. Following the mini-bye, the Giants have put that victory behind them as they prepare for a matchup against a very tough Broncos team.

As we see often in this league, a dominant outing one day does not guarantee a repeat performance the following week. Especially with a young team, it is crucial to stay level throughout the season and not ride the emotions from one week to the next.

"Keeping the main thing the main thing is the most important," coach Brian Daboll said in his 1-on-1 interview with Giants.com. "You treat every week with a sense of urgency and do the things you need to do to try to be successful on gameday. Again, there are highs, there are lows – there is to every season. There are good plays, plays you want improvement from, good coaching, coaching you need improvement from, and you can't ride a roller coaster in this league."

ALL-TIME SERIES

The New York Giants (2-4) will travel to Denver to face the Broncos (4-2) on Sunday, Oct. 19, at Empower Field at Mile High. Kickoff is set for 4:05 pm ET, 2:05 p.m. MDT, on CBS.

This will be the 15th all-time meeting between the two teams, with the series (including the postseason) tied, 7-7. The last time they met in Denver was in Week 6 of 2017.

The teams last met in Week 1 of the 2021 season at MetLife Stadium. The Giants' most recent victory over the Broncos was on Oct. 15, 2017, when they defeated the Broncos on the road, 23-10.

DART, SKATTEBO SPARK OFFENSE

After starting the season 0-3, the Giants have won two of their last three games while averaging 23 points. This comes after the offense failed to reach double-digit points in two of the first three games of the season.

Dart has completed nearly 66 percent of his passes for 508 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions since taking over as the starter. But it's his dual-threat ability that has really made a big impact on the offense. Dart has two touchdowns on the ground to go with 50+ rushing yards in each of his three starts, which has provided a massive spark to the run game and has helped open things up for Skattebo. The rookie running back has no fewer than 90 yards of offense in each of the last three games and is coming off a three-touchdown performance against the Eagles. Skattebo's five touchdowns on the season have him tied with Ashton Jeanty for the most among all rookies. While they are both only in their first season, it's clear the two rookies have provided a needed jolt to the entire locker room.

"I would just say that they're very competitive individuals who have a lot of pride, toughness and belief in themselves, and I think that's important for any team when you have players like that," Daboll said after last week's win over the Eagles. "I know they're two rookies. We have a number of other rookies I feel are in a similar situation relative to how they compete and what they do to prepare and how they go out and play. Those two guys, they care about their teammates, they prepare very diligently, and I trust them a lot out on the field."

BRONCOS DEFENSE 'AS GOOD AS IT GETS'

Sunday's matchup in Denver will be the toughest test to date for the new-look offense. The Broncos' defense comes in at No. 2 in both points and yards allowed while boasting top 10 units against the run and pass. And they get even better in key situations, too, with Vance Joseph's unit ranking No. 1 in third down defense, fourth down defense and red zone defense.

The Broncos have talent throughout their defense, but especially up front and in the secondary. Nik Bonitto leads the NFL with eight sacks and has played a big role in Denver racking up 30 total sacks through six games. Not only does this lead the league by a wide margin, but it also puts the Broncos on pace to shatter the previous NFL record of 72 sacks in a season by the 1985 Bears. Twelve different players have at least a half-sack for Denver as they have been able to generate constant pressure on the quarterback each and every week. Moving to the secondary, the Broncos have several players who can wreck a game for an opposing offense. But of course, the unit is led by reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Pat Surtain II. At just 25 years old, Surtain has established himself as the league's top cornerback.

"They're impressive," Daboll said about the Denver defense. "They're impressive every game. They create a lot of negative plays. They have 30 sacks in six games. There were nine last week, I think. They rotate guys. But Bonitto is an unbelievable pass rusher. You can't have a plan for all of them. They all can rush. I think 12 guys have at least a sack on their defense. We've got the reigning defensive player of the year, as a corner, Surtain II, an Alabama guy. They're just really good. They play good coverage, complemented with the front. They disguise well. They're as good as it gets right now."

PLAYER TO WATCH

LT Andrew Thomas -- Thomas has been outstanding since returning in Week 3. After being limited in that first game back, the star left tackle has played every offensive snap over the last three games and has looked like his normal, dominant self. Thomas has allowed just two total pressures on 130 pass-block snaps. This week he will be tasked with trying to slow down Bonitto, the NFL's sack leader, and Jonathon Cooper, who is coming off a seven-pressure performance against the Jets last week.

BRONCO TO WATCH

RB J.K. Dobbins -- While most of the talk this week has been about the Broncos' defense, and rightfully so, Dobbins has quietly put together a solid campaign. The veteran running back has carried the ball 91 times for 442 yards, good for an average of 4.9 yards per carry, and has found the end zone four times already. His 14 runs of 10+ yards are tied for the second most in the NFL. The Giants have held each of their last two opponents to fewer than 90 total rushing yards. Containing Dobbins, rookie RJ Harvey and the rest of the Broncos' run game will be the next test for the Big Blue run defense.

MATCHUP TO WATCH

OLB Brian Burns vs. LT Garett Bolles -- Sunday's game should provide us with tremendous matchups on the edge on both sides of the ball. Burns ranks third in the NFL with seven sacks, just one behind Bonitto for the league lead. Meanwhile, Bolles is in the midst of his best season as a pro. The Broncos tackle has not allowed a sack yet this season and has surrendered only five total pressures, which has led to him being PFF's highest-ranked pass blocking tackle in the league. Burns vs. Bolles should be a very entertaining matchup.

STAT TO KNOW

The Giants have scored 24 points on their first offensive possession of games this season, which is tied for the second-most in the NFL. In fact, the Giants have scored a touchdown on each of their first possessions in the last three games since Jaxson Dart took over as the starting quarterback. Meanwhile, the Broncos have yet to allow an opening-drive touchdown this season, limiting their opponents to a total of 15 points on five field goals.
