10 things to watch in Giants vs. Eagles

DABOLL-SIRIANNI-10-THINGS

TURNING THE PAGE

As we all know, things can change rapidly in the NFL from one week to another. That is especially true this week, as the team is coming off an especially heartbreaking loss to the Broncos, one that saw the Giants surrender 33 points in the fourth quarter. But after reviewing the tape on Monday, the team turned its focus to this weekend's trip to Philadelphia, where a key divisional matchup lies ahead.

"Well, that's what you need to do," coach Brian Daboll said Monday about turning the page to Week 8, "but there are certainly a lot of guys that are hurting right now. Some physically. But they gave everything they had and we came up short. That was a tough one, make no mistake about it, but you've got to get back on your horse and get ready to play a very talented team that we just played two weeks ago. Look at the things that we didn't do quite as well and we'll get onto Philadelphia with the right mindset."

The Giants head into Week 8 looking to do something the franchise has not done since 2013 – win in Philadelphia. A victory this weekend would also give the Giants a sweep of the season series, something they have not done since 2007. It won't be easy, though, especially just 17 days after the first meeting between the two teams.

ALL-TIME SERIES

The New York Giants (2-5) will travel to Philadelphia to face the Eagles (5-2) on Sunday, October 26, at Lincoln Financial Field. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm ET on FOX.

This will be the 187th all-time meeting between the two teams, with the Eagles holding a 95-89-2 lead in the series.

Sunday will be the second game between the teams in 17 days. They last met in Week 6 at MetLife Stadium, when the Giants defeated the Eagles, 34-17, in a primetime victory.

DART, SKATTEBO LOOK TO KEEP IT GOING

The Giants' offense has transformed since Jaxson Dart was named the starting quarterback in Week 4, with an average of 25.3 points per game over the last four weeks. The rookie quarterback has stepped up in key situations; on third downs, he has converted a first down at the third-highest rate (48.8 percent) and averaged the second-most EPA per drop back (0.44) in the NFL, according to Next Gen Stats. Additionally, he's been able to avoid negative plays in those situations with just one sack taken on the 15 pressures he's faced on third down. But for the first time in his young career, Dart will face a defense for the second time. This time around, the Eagles will have defensive tackle Jalen Carter, cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, and unretired Brandon Graham on the field, all of whom missed either some or all of the Week 6 matchup.

"I don't think there's really too much of an advantage for either team, it's just going to be the guys who execute their schemes at the highest level," Dart said Wednesday about facing a team for the second time. "It's important for us that we put together a really good game plan and also have an open mind that during the game they might do things that we didn't really expect them to do and they're going to be thinking the exact same thing. Like I said, it's a game of chess."

Dart's first start in Week 4 also coincided with Cam Skattebo taking over as the team's lead running back. Heading into Week 8, Skattebo leads all rookies with 587 total yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns. Since Week 3, his 31 forced missed tackles rank second in the league behind only Christian McCaffrey (37). Meanwhile, his 316 rushing yards after contact ranks as the fourth-most since Week 3. Back in Week 6, Skattebo totaled 110 yards and three touchdowns against the Eagles.

INJURIES IN THE SECONDARY

During the Broncos' fourth quarter comeback last week, two notable members of the secondary were not on the field as safety Jevón Holland and cornerback Paulson Adebo both departed early with knee injuries. Neither veteran practiced this week, putting their status for Sunday in doubt. If Holland and Adebo are unable to go, it would pave the way for safety Dane Belton and cornerback Deonte Banks to once again see extended action.

"He'll do everything he can to be as ready as he can be," Daboll said about Banks. "Coaches will work with him. Again, all those decisions, who can go, who can't go, I'm saying it on Wednesday, that'll be decided on Friday. So, Tae is working hard, doing everything he can."

The Eagles are coming off a week in which their passing game finally got going. Quarterback Jalen Hurts completed 19 of 23 passes (82.6 percent) for 326 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions for a perfect passer rating of 158.3, while wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith combined for 304 of those yards and all three scores. Both wideouts came through with explosive plays as they both found the end zone from 45+ yards out.

PLAYER TO WATCH

WR Wan'Dale Robinson – In the absence of Malik Nabers, Robinson has stepped up in a big way over the last two games. The fourth-year wideout caught six passes for 84 yards and a touchdown against the Eagles in Week 6, and followed that up with six receptions for 95 yards against the vaunted Broncos secondary. Since taking over at QB, Dart has leaned on Robinson, as the slot receiver has gotten a 24.2 percent target share since Week 4, including 7+ targets in each of the last three games.

MATCHUP TO WATCH

CB Cor'Dale Flott vs. WR DeVonta Smith – Flott has taken his game to another level this season. No defensive back in the NFL has been targeted more (37) without allowing a touchdown this season. The fourth-year corner has a 57.5 passer rating against and has allowed just 5.7 yards per target, according to Next Gen Stats, but Flott will be faced with a difficult matchup this weekend. Smith caught just four passes for 49 yards back in Week 6, but is coming off a nine-catch, 183-yard performance against the Vikings last week. He leads the Eagles with 504 receiving yards and has a career-high 3.9 yards per route on the year. While Smith does line up in the slot a good amount, he will likely see plenty of Flott when on the outside.

EAGLE TO WATCH

RB Saquon Barkley – It doesn't matter what his numbers may look like, Barkley is still a threat every time he touches the ball. According to NGS, Barkley has averaged 4.2 yards per carry on runs directed outside the tackles this season, more than two yards fewer than his average last season (6.6.). But in Week 6, he had five carries for 43 yards (8.6 avg.) on such runs. The Giants are allowing a league-high 5.0 yards after contact per carry and 56.6 percent success rate on designed runs directed outside the tackles. Not only does this lead the league this season, but it is also the highest success rate allowed by any defense in a season over the last decade.

STAT TO KNOW

Since Week 4, the Giants rank second in the NFL in first downs with 94, trailing only the Chiefs. The team's 48.2 percent conversion rate on third down ranks sixth in that span, while their 43 rushing first downs leads the league, aided by Dart's 16 (most among all quarterbacks). The Eagles' 43.0 percent third down conversion rate allowed ranks 26th in the NFL. The Giants went 11 for 16 on third down in the Week 6 matchup.
