Instant Analysis: Giants fall to Broncos, 33-32

FINAL-SCORE-BRONCOS

AT A GLANCE

After shutting out the Broncos through three quarters, the Giants gave up 33 points in the final frame as part of a 33-32 loss at Mile High. There were three lead changes in the final 1:51 of the game.

The final sequence unfolded as follows.

Giants wide receiver Beaux Collins, an undrafted rookie, drew a 38-yard defensive passing interference penalty on Riley Moss with 40 seconds left after the Broncos had taken a 30-26 lead, their first of the game. Denver coach Sean Payton was also penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct on the play, setting up a first-and-goal from the one-yard line. Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart punched it in for a touchdown, giving a two-point lead back to the Giants. It could have been three, but Jude McAtamney missed his second extra point attempt of the game.

The Broncos took over with 33 seconds left at their own 23. Bo Nix threw a 29-yard pass to Marvin Mims Jr. and spiked the ball with 18 seconds left. Outside linebacker Brian Burns was penalized for a neutral zone infraction, setting up a first-and-five. Nix then hit Courtland Sutton for 22 more yards and spiked it again, setting up a 39-yard field goal by Wil Lutz as time expired for a one-point Broncos victory.

The Giants fell to 2-5 on the season while the Broncos improved to 5-2.

UP NEXT

The Giants will face the Eagles for the second time in 17 days. The Giants took the first leg of the season series at home, defeating the defending Super Bowl champions 34-17 on Thursday Night Football in Week 6. Philadelphia broke a two-game losing streak on Sunday with a 28-22 road victory over Minnesota, improving to 5-2.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE OFFENSE

The Giants' streak of four games with the same starting offensive line came to an end. Center John Michael Schmitz suffered a concussion last Thursday and did not travel with the team to Denver. Austin Schlottmann, who played 32 snaps in place of Schmitz against Philadelphia, took first-team reps in practice this week and made his first start since 2023 with the Vikings. Schlottmann began his NFL career with Denver, where he played 42 games (seven starts) in three seasons.

Offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo also did not make the trip. Assistant offensive line coach James Ferentz replaced him on the sideline.

The Giants punted on their first two drives, ending their three-game streak of scoring touchdowns the first time they touched the ball. They broke through on the third possession when Jaxson Dart, after buying time in the pocket, found an open Daniel Bellinger for a 44-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter. It was the longest completion of the rookie quarterback's young career and the tight end's first touchdown since Oct. 16, 2022. Dart jumpstarted the drive with a 23-yard completion to wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson after extending the play with his feet.

Bellinger had 59 yards in the first quarter, surpassing his career-high for an entire game (previously 52 at New Orleans in Week 5). He finished with three catches for 88 yards and the score.

Rookie running back Cam Skattebo scored his sixth touchdown of the season, his first through the air, on a 13-yard catch-and-run to give the Giants a 13-0 lead with 8:46 left in the first half.

Dart had two touchdown passes in the first half alone after the Broncos allowed just four all season (six overall including rushing) before Sunday.

Wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson caught six passes for 95 yards and drew two defensive pass interference flags in addition to a facemask penalty.

Running back Tyrone Tracy Jr., who missed Weeks 4 and 5 with a shoulder injury, broke the game open with a 31-yard touchdown run to give the Giants a 19-0 lead with 2:41 left in the third quarter.

Tight end Theo Johnson tried to put the game away with a 41-yard catch-and-run touchdown on a pass that ricocheted off Robinson. The Giants increased their lead back to 26-8 with 10:14 remaining in the game.

Linebacker Justin Strnad really made things interesting with an interception off Dart with less than five minutes left in the game. The Broncos turned it into a touchdown, cutting the deficit to three points.

Denver, which entered with the most sacks as a team (30) and by an individual (Nik Bonitto), took down Dart four times for a loss of 15 yards.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE DEFENSE

Including the second half of Week 6 against the Eagles, the Giants pitched five consecutive shutout quarters heading into the fourth in Denver. The Broncos broke through with a two-yard touchdown pass from Bo Nix to Troy Franklin less than a minute into the fourth quarter. Nix completed the two-point conversion to Sutton as the Broncos cut the deficit to 19-8 at the time

It was just the start of a 33-point fourth quarter, which included an 18-yard touchdown run by Nix to give the Broncos their first lead with 1:51 left in the game.

According to NFL Research, the Broncos' 33 points in the fourth quarter are the most by any team that was shut out in the first three quarters in NFL history.

A late addition to the injury report, rookie outside linebacker Abdul Carter was cleared to play. The third overall pick was limited in Friday's practice with a hamstring injury and listed as questionable before the flight out west. He recorded three tackles in the game.

Outside linebacker Brian Burns, who trailed Bonitto by one for the NFL lead in sacks, got his eighth of the season on a hard hit on second-year quarterback Bo Nix late in the first quarter. Burns got another in the first half and now has nine in seven games.

Safety Jevón Holland suffered a knee injury with 7:54 left in second quarter. He was replaced by Dane Belton, the NFL leader in special teams tackles. Belton made an immediate impact on defense, however, laying a big hit on wide receiver Courtland Sutton short of the goal line on fourth-and-goal. The Broncos converted just two of eight first downs in the first half while the Giants held them to 102 yards.

Cornerback Cor'Dale Flott, who had his first interception of the season last week, had three tackles (one for loss) and two passes defensed.

Cornerback Paulson Adebo left in the third quarter with a knee injury. Deonte Banks took his place.

Veteran linebacker Victor Dimukeje recorded two tackles and a pass defensed in his Giants debut. The former Cardinal signed with the Giants in free agency but suffered a pectoral injury this offseason.

The Giants broke up eight passes, six of which came from their defensive front (Burns, Dimukeje and defensive linemen Dexter Lawrence II, Roy Robertson-Harris, Rakeem Nuñez-Roches Sr. and Darius Alexander).

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT SPECIAL TEAMS

Punter Jamie Gillan handled kickoff duties once again and placed one perfectly on the sideline, forcing Denver's RJ Harvey to catch the ball at the six-yard line as he fell out of bounds. The Giants entered Week 7 ranked top five in both kickoff and punt return coverage.

Jude McAtamney missed an extra point attempt for the second consecutive game since he took over for the injured Graham Gano in Week 4.
