AT A GLANCE
For the third consecutive week, the Giants' fate was decided in the final seconds. This time, there was no game-winning play â for either team â as the Giants and Commanders played to a 27-27 tie.
The final play of overtime began as a second-and-eight for the Commanders at the Giants 24. Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels was tackled for no gain to set up what would have been a 42-yard field goal attempt for Drew Stevens to win the game. But the Commanders never got up to the line of scrimmage and time ran out.
The Giants forced the extra period after erasing a 14-point deficit with 11 minutes left in regulation. The Giants took the first possession of overtime, but it ended when Dominic Zvada, the undrafted rookie who had already attempted four 50-yard field goals earlier in the game, missed a 46-yard attempt wide left.
Washington took over at its own 36 and then punted after Abdul Carter forced a fumble (which the Commanders recovered) on third down.
The Giants' ensuing drive got off to to a promising start with Cam Skattebo's 19-yard run that led into a Malik Nabers' 28-yard gain from Jameis Winston, who had thrown two of his three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Skattebo then ran for nine yards and again for five yards and a first down at the Commanders 24 as they approached the two-minute warning of overtime. After the break, Daron Payne pried the ball away from Skattebo and Shy Tuttle recovered for Washington.
On the next and final possession, Terry McLaurin tight-roped the sideline for a 16-yard gain to get things going. Daniels then scrambled 16 more yards as part of a 100-yard rushing, two-touchdown game for the quarterback who missed the previous two weeks with a dislocated left elbow. But the drive ended without a final attempt for Washington.
UP NEXT
The Giants (3-1-1)Â host the New Orleans Saints, who fell to 1-4 with a 23-13 loss to the undefeated Minnesota Vikings. After that, the Giants travel to Houston for their last game before the bye week.
Regardless of Sunday's outcome at Washington, the Giants would enter Week 6 atop the NFC East standings after the Eagles (2-3) and Cowboys (2-3) both lost. The Commanders fell to 1-3-1.
NOTABLE
Sunday was the seventh time the Giants and Commanders played in an overtime game, including three in the past eight seasons. The Giants' last two ties were both against Washington on Dec. 4, 2022 and Nov. 23, 1997.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE OFFENSE
Making his third consecutive start in place of the injured Jaxson Dart, Jameis Winston completed 33 of 54 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns.
The Commanders took the lead two minutes into the game, and the Giants didn't catch them again until Malik Nabers high-pointed a 17-yard pass from Winston in the end zone to tie the game 27-27 with 1:43 left in regulation.
Winston is the first Giant to have consecutive games with three passing touchdowns or more since Eli Manning in 2016. Winston's 54 pass attempts were tied for the third-most of his career and were the most in a game in his career in which he did not throw an interception.
The Giants mustered just 77 yards in the first half, including 12 carries for 26 yards on the ground. The Commanders got the first takeaway of the game late in second quarter when linebacker K'Lavon Chaisson stripped Winston and defensive tackle Tim Settle recovered in Giants territory. Washington kicked a field goal on the ensuing possession to take a 12-3 lead into halftime.
Right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor suffered a calf injury with 6:35 left in the third quarter and was replaced by second-year pro Marcus Mbow. Two plays later, running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. converted fourth-and-four with a 21-yard catch-and run. It kept alive a drive that ended with Winston's three-yard touchdown pass to tight end Isaiah Likely, cutting the deficit to 19-13 at the end of the third quarter.
Likely found the end zone again in the fourth quarter to bring it back to a one-possession game after trading touchdowns with Washington. It was originally ruled a fumble as he dove into the end zone, but it was quickly reversed to a 17-yard touchdown.
Likely is the first Giants tight end ever to have a game with at least nine receptions and two touchdown catches. He is also the second Giants tight end to have multiple games with multiple receiving touchdowns in a single season, joining Joe Walton (two in 1962).
Likely finished with a career-high 11 catches for 94 yards and two scores.
J.J. McCarthy served as the No. 2 quarterback behind Winston, and Jake Haener was the emergency third quarterback. McCarthy made his Giants debut when he entered the game for one play in the middle of the first quarter. He completed a short pass to Darnell Mooney for a loss of five yards, but outside linebacker Dorance Armstrong committed a facemask penalty on the play. McCarthy was used sporadically in the second half and had two rushing attempts for two yards. He also had a 14-yard completion to Malik Nabers, but it was called back due to an illegal shift.
Bryan Hudson made his second consecutive start â the first two of his career â in place of John Michael Schmitz at center.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE DEFENSE
The Commanders snapped the league's longest active streak of 18 consecutive games without scoring a touchdown on the opening drive.
The Giants had multiple sacks in the first quarter for the first time since Dec. 15, 2024 against John Harbaugh's Ravens. This time, it was outside linebacker Abdul Carter and cornerback Dru Phillips getting to Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels, who missed the previous two games with a dislocated left elbow. The Giants had a league-low three sacks entering Sunday. Carter did a Spider-Man celebration after his sack to honor teammate Brian "Spida" Burns, who is out for the season with a torn ACL. It was Phillips' first sack since his rookie season on Sept. 15, 2024, when he also took down Daniels at Washington.
Phillips wasn't done there. He finished with three solo tackles, two sacks and three quarterback hits. According to Stats Perform, he became the first Giants cornerback to have at least two sacks in a game since Jason Sehorn on Sept. 29, 1996 vs. Minnesota.
Daniels put the Commanders ahead 19-6 midway through the third quarter with a 38-yard rushing touchdown, the longest of his career. The Giants responded with a touchdown of their own, but Daniels struck back with another 26-yard touchdown run to start the fourth quarter. He then found Terry McLaurin for a successful two-point conversion and a 27-13 lead with 11:05 left to play.
Linebacker Arvell Reese, the reigning Pepsi Rookie of the Week, recorded nine more tackles on Sunday and his first career sack to help force a Washington punt near the end of regulation. Over the last 30 seasons, Reese is the only Giant to reach 40 total tackles through the first five games of his NFL career.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT SPECIAL TEAMS
Both teams knew footing would be an issue on Sunday. With rain coming down, the Commanders missed the first extra point attempt of the game. Giants kicker Dominic Zvada then missed for the first time this season on a 50-yard attempt. But the Giants weren't about to shy away from the undrafted rookie.
Since at least 1983, Zvada  became the only NFL rookie with four field goal attempts of 50+ yards in a single game â and just the second player overall to do it. The other time was Indianapolis' Matt Gay at Baltimore on Sept. 24, 2023.
In total, Zvada made from 51 and 56 yards (which tied Ali Haji-Sheikh's 1983 record for the longest made field goal by a rookie in Giants history) and missed from 50, 57 and 46 yards.
The 57-yard attempt went wide left with two seconds left in the first half. It would have tied the franchise record if it went through the uprights. It was the longest field goal attempt by a Giants rookie kicker since Owen Pochman missed a 63-yarder in Denver on Sept.10, 2001, also at the end of the first half.
Jordan Stout averaged 57.0 yards on two punts, both of which were downed inside the 20.
