Quarterback Jaxson Dart will miss the rest of the 2026 regular season.
Jameis Winston will start in his place.
Coach John Harbaugh confirmed the news following Wednesday's practice, four days before the Giants (1-1) face the Titans (0-2) at MetLife Stadium.
Asked a follow-up about if the team advances past the regular season, Harbaugh replied, "I think I said it, yeah. I said it – regular season. Other than that, how do you know? There's no way to know. It just depends on the recovery. You can't pinpoint it exactly."
Dart suffered a knee injury when he was hit by two Rams defenders on the opening drive of the Giants' 28-6 loss on Monday night at SoFi Stadium.
In their Week 1 victory over the Cowboys, Dart became the first quarterback in NFL history to open a season with at least three passing touchdowns, 50 rushing yards and a passer rating of 130. In Week 2, he completed three of five passes for 20 yards before going to the ground on the seventh play from scrimmage.
Winston played the rest of the way, completing 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards and an interception while being sacked twice. Overall, the Rams recorded eight quarterback hits and broke up 10 passes.
Now the Giants will tailor the offense to Winston's skillset with 15 games remaining.
"To me, a big part of it is building a game plan now for Jameis," Harbaugh said. "He'll be the starter. So, build a game plan for Jameis to suit his skillset. The game plan this last week was built for Jaxson obviously. This will be an opportunity to do that, and that's exactly what we'll do. We'll build around all the things that he does well that are in the offense, which there's plenty in the offense, and of course how to attack Tennessee and their defense and what they do."
Harbaugh added, "I don't think it's too big (of an undertaking) because all the stuff is in the offense. Like all those plays are plays that we have that we've been practicing and running. It's just kind of more like a shift maybe over a little bit … maybe a lane change as opposed to changing direction or anything like that, more of a lane change."
Winston signed a two-year contract extension five days before the start of the season, which is his second as a Giant and 12th in the NFL.
Winston, the No. 1 draft pick in 2015, has played in 109 regular-season games (89 starts) for the Buccaneers (2015-19), Saints (2020-23), Browns (2024) and Giants (2025-26). He has completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 24,903 yards, 156 touchdowns and 114 interceptions. On the ground, Winston has 1,321 yards and 13 touchdowns on 332 carries.
Winston started Weeks 11 and 12 for the Giants in 2025 while Dart, then a rookie, dealt with a concussion.
In those two games, Winston threw two touchdowns, ran for another, and scored on a 33-yard reception on a memorable trick play in Detroit.
The Giants have a third quarterback, Jake Haener, currently on the practice squad.
A fourth-round pick by New Orleans in 2023, Haener has appeared in eight NFL games and made one start on Dec. 15, 2024, against the Commanders.
Prior to the NFL, Haener played two seasons at Washington and the last four at Fresno State, where he set the school record for career completion percentage (68.1) and ranks in the top five for every major passing statistic. Haener was named MVP of the 2023 Senior Bowl.
Harbaugh said the Giants plan to make additions to the quarterback room, preferably a veteran, but they have to go with what's available. All avenues are on the table, including a potential trade.
"It depends on really what our options end up being," Harbaugh said.
In the meantime, the world keeps spinning.
The Giants earlier in the day held their first team meeting since the Rams game.
"A lot of water went under the bridge in the last 30 hours, something like that," Harbaugh said. "We just had to talk about it. For us, we just put it out there and say, hey, here's where we're at, this is how we're looking at it. There's always dialogue in our meetings and things like that, and we kind of tried to lay it out, where we're going, what we anticipate our mindset to be."
Sure enough, Dart was in attendance.
"I think he's determined," Harbaugh said. "He's bummed. It's hard. The season's not over, but it is for him. And we kind of talked about that too. That was part of it. That was part of the deal. With injuries there's a certain mourning that takes place. … But as we said, when you wake up and you feel like it's the end of the world, and you wake up and the world's not done. The world keeps spinning. The games keep getting played. Nobody feels sorry for you. It's time to go play the next game. On Sunday at 1 o'clock, the ball's going to get kicked off. We're going to have to be the best football team we can be, and that's the thing, it's not a one-man game. Not like tennis. We don't forfeit."
