The Giants.com crew members give their final takeaways from Miami and look ahead to the final week of the preseason.

John Schmeelk: We have written about a lot of the competitions taking place on the roster during training camp, but not much has been said about the running back room – until now. With the addition of Najee Harris, a veteran whom John Harbaugh had a lot of experience playing against in Baltimore, the running back room is now very deep. I'm not sure how it sorts itself out.

Devin Singletary was effective for the second straight week in the preseason, rushing eight times for 40 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown run. Tyrone Tracy Jr. averaged 4.3 yards per carry and had a 12-yard run, despite fumbling once. Harris seems close to contributing and participated in the Thursday joint practice before not playing on Saturday. Cam Skattebo seems likely to have a big role. Then you have younger guys like Eric Gray and Damon Bankston.

Can all four of those players make the initial 53? If all of them do, how do the roles sort out? Are there designated third down and goal line backs or is it just a rotation throughout the game? It's a group I'll be keeping an eye on in the final week before the roster is put together.

Dan Salomone: J.C. Davis never sleeps on the plane after a road game, even after he plays all 81 offensive snaps for his team at left tackle on a soupy Miami day at Hard Rock Stadium.

"I think the last time I played a game that hot had to be when I was in New Mexico," Davis said. "We played A&M, I think. So, it's been a minute before I played in something like that, but we were prepared. We were hydrating all week, so we knew it was going to be hot. We had practice out there Thursday, so we were well prepared for it."

Davis, whose college journey took him from Contra Costa College to New Mexico to Illinois before being drafted in the sixth round by the Giants, had more than just soreness to think about on the flight home.

Harbaugh said the goal all week was to put Davis in that exact situation and see how he handled it.

"He did it," Harbaugh said. "He did it well. He had a lot of plus plays. He graded out very well, and that's a big step in his development for sure. Also in us gaining confidence in his ability to go in there and do good things in a game."

At the same time, Davis admitted that he has learned it is one thing to be "the guy" in college, and whole other deal to be that in the NFL – like Andrew Thomas.

"He does way different stuff than me, but I'm trying to pick up and learn from him and pick off stuff that he does," Davis said. "Some stuff you can't do what he does. That's him."

But the Giants need Davis to be himself. Then they will see how far that takes him and the team.

The same can be said for all rookies who are less than three weeks away from playing in games that count.

"He's going to be expected to play a role on the team and it's going to be a very important role and he could be in there at any time really, so he's got to be ready for that," Harbaugh said. "And hopefully … you'd like to get off to a good start, but man, the bullets start flying in an NFL game with the type of players you're playing against, the speed that things hit you with, and they certainly test you as a rookie. They find out how fast you can think and adjust and make changes on the move, and so that's the things that I think you have to deal with."

Matt Citak: One of the most intriguing position competitions throughout training camp has been in the secondary. Between the cornerbacks and safeties, there are still spots to be won, both in the starting lineup and further down the depth chart. Throughout the few days in Miami, several players from these two position groups stepped up.

We'll start at cornerback, where Deonte Banks continued his strong summer with another positive outing. The fourth-year corner was on the field for 16 snaps against the Dolphins Saturday, nine of which he spent in coverage. Banks did not allow a reception, broke up two passes, and earned a 39.6 passer rating when targeted, according to Pro Football Focus. Additionally, he came up with two tackles (one solo), both of which registered as defensive stops (tackles that constitute a "failure" for the offense) by PFF. Banks finished as one of the highest ranked players on the defense by PFF. The only cornerback ranked higher by the analytics site was Dru Phillips, who was the Giants' highest ranked player overall. Phillips played only six total snaps, but recorded three solo tackles, including one tackle for loss and two defensive stops, and forced two fumbles, one of which the Giants recovered.

"I just feel like all those guys are doing a good job," Harbaugh said about the team's cornerbacks. "It seems like we're deep at corner. Certainly planning on that panning out throughout the course of the season, and I'm sure all those guys are going to play a lot of football for us and play very well."

Jevón Holland did not play in Saturday's game, but Tyler Nubin did see some action. The third-year safety took advantage of his opportunity. On the field for 17 total defensive snaps, Nubin finished as the team's second highest ranked player, trailing only Phillips. The young safety had three solo tackles and made an impressive play to break up pass across the middle. He was on the field for 10 coverage snaps and earned a 56.3 passer rating against, according to PFF.

When it comes to the Giants' defense, a lot of the attention this summer has been put on the front seven. If the secondary can step up and play like it did against the Dolphins, both during the joint practice and in the preseason matchup, then the defense as a whole could make a significant jump this season.
