Practice Report (8/17): Notes from the sideline

DARNELL-MOONEY-CITIZENS

The Giants were back on the practice field in shells in their first work since their opening preseason game against the Vikings on Saturday. Temperatures were in the low 80's with very little humidity under partly cloudy skies.

* Situational work focused on the hurry-up, getting to the line quickly and getting the snap off during parts of the game where time is a factor.

* The team worked on run and play action in the first team period. Jaxson Dart hit Calvin Austin III on a well-executed RPO-style slant and then connected with him on another RPO play later in the period.

* Chauncey Golston and Micah McFadden had run stops during the period and Tyler Nubin got into the backfield to pressure the quarterback. Deonte Banks and Jevón Holland played good coverage on a deep ball towards the end zone on the right side of the field. Elijah Campbell also played good coverage on a pass to Xavier Gipson.

* The team worked on the goal line in the next team period. Cam Skattebo ran for a touchdown up the middle. Tyler Nubin knocked a ball away in the back of the end zone and the defensive line batted a ball at the line of scrimmage. Austin scored a touchdown during the period and so did running back Damon Bankston, who caught a short pass over the middle. Outside linebacker Khalid Kareem got into the backfield and forced a throwaway.

* The next period focused on tempo and no-huddle as the team moved the ball down the field. Banks had a pass breakup, running on the hip of a receiver, who ran an in-cut, as Banks knocked the pass away. Theo Johnson caught a touchdown from Jaxson Dart on a quick out to the right pylon. Art Green had a pass breakup deep down the field, leaping to knock the ball away on a play intended for Ryan Miller on the sideline.

* Each kicker, Ben Sauls and Dominic Zvada, went 5 of 6 on field goals, with both making two attempts from 50+ yards.

* During 7-on-7, the defense played such good coverage on two plays that there likely would have been coverage sacks if there was a live pass rush.

* Malik Nabers participated in this competitive period and made two catches, including a leaping one in the middle of the field. He came down with the ball and was clearly happy he was able to make such an athletic grab.

* The offense caught fire in the next team period. Jaxson Dart began the period with three straight completions, including a slant to Darnell Mooney, a deep completion to Isaiah Likely going towards the sideline, and a shallow cross to Malachi Fields. Jameis Winston completed an out to Ryan Miller after Art Green tried to get in front of the receiver and knock it away. Miller caught it and turned it upfield for a big gain. Damon Bankston had a blitz pickup on the play.

* The defense made some big plays of their own. Dru Phillips had a stop in the run game and Arvell Reese fired off the edge to pressure the quarterback. Raheem Layne had a sack on a play where Darius Alexander was also in the backfield. Chauncey Golston and Phillips combined for a sack. Kareem and Darius Muasau had pressures in the period, and Ar'Darius Washington was in great position on a pass into the flat for a quick stop.

* The final period featured fourth quarter end of game situations with the offense trying to score. Kayvon Thibodeaux tipped a pass at the line of scrimmage, deflecting it into the air and into the hands of Abdul Carter, who returned it for a touchdown despite the heated pursuit of Jon Runyan. Ar'Darius Washington came up with an interception of his own on a deep pass to the right, catching it near the goal line to give the second consecutive win to the defense.

* The team will be back in pads tomorrow before they travel to Miami on Wednesday for a joint practice with the Dolphins the following day.
