CBS Sports names Giants among most impactful draft classes
The Giants' 2023 draft class took the field for the first time this past weekend at the team's rookie minicamp.
While we will have to wait another few months before Deonte Banks, John Michael Schmitz, Jalin Hyatt and the rest of the seven-man draft class suit up for an actual game, the group of rookies are already garnering praise from the media.
CBS Sports draft analyst Chris Trapasso released his ranking of the top 10 most impactful 2023 draft classes for the upcoming season, where the Giants came in at No. 8.
"It was going to be receiver or cornerback for Giants in the first round, and after an unprecedented run on the wideout position, the G-Men snagged an ideal on-an-island defensive back for Wink Martindale's super-aggressive scheme in Banks," Trapasso wrote. "Schmitz is extremely high floor because of his experience, smooth movements in the run game and anchoring plus recovery skill in pass protection."
In addition to Banks and Schmitz, the draft analyst also applauded the Giants for their selections of Hyatt and Eric Gray in the third and fifth round, respectively.
"He is stupidly fast on the field and will be relied upon early to provide the Giants another vertical threat," Trapasso said about the rookie wide receiver. "I love his pairing with established downfield stud Darius Slayton. Gray was a sneaky-good grab later. He provides a delightful blend of power through contact and twitch to elude defenders. The former Oklahoma star is ready to be an asset in the pass game right away too."
Here is the Giants' entire 2023 draft class:
- Round 1, Pick 24: CB Deonte Banks, Maryland
- Round 2, Pick 57: OL John Michael Schmitz, Minnesota
- Round 3, Pick 89: WR Jalin Hyatt, Tennessee
- Round 5, Pick 172: RB Eric Gray, Oklahoma
- Round 6, Pick 209: CB Tre Hawkins III, Old Dominion
- Round 7, Pick 243: DL Jordon Riley, Oregon
- Round 7, Pick 254: DB Gervarrius Owens, Houston
