'No cut corners; fast and violent': Draft picks grew up watching John Harbaugh win

ARVELL-REESE-JOHN-HARBAUGH-FRANCIS-MAUIGOA

John Harbaugh won his first game as a head coach on Sept. 7, 2008.

Here are the ages of the Giants' 2026 draft class at the time.

  • LB Arvell Reese: 3 years, 8 days
  • OL Francis Mauigoa: 3 years, 3 months, 3 days
  • CB Colton Hood: 3 years, 6 months, 15 days
  • WR Malachi Fields: 5 years, 12 days
  • DL Bobby Jamison-Travis: 7 years, 4 months, 10 days
  • OL J.C. Davis: 4 years, 10 months, 29 days

What they witnessed over the next 18 impressionable years was a league in which his Ravens won 193 games, including Super Bowl XLVII. Now they are members of the inaugural class to kickstart the Giants' Harbaugh era.

"The image that I remember growing up, I always felt like the Ravens played fast and violent," Reese said. "And that's kind of what I try to model my game after, being fast and violent, always thinking violence for sure."

While taken fifth overall on Thursday night, the All-American from Ohio State was No. 1 on the Giants' draft board (non-quarterbacks). There was more hope than belief that he would be available to them when they went on the clock. The former prevailed and Reese became the first pick of the new-look Giants.

"I think that says a lot about me," Reese said. "I won't say it proves my point because I haven't done anything at this level yet, but I think I've got some shoes to fill. I think I'm ready for the challenge."

The Giants' 2026 draft picks have arrived at their new home.

The draft picks, along with a slew of undrafted free agents and tryout players, will take the field for the first time next week at rookie minicamp. They will later get thrown into the deep end with veterans for full spring practices, beginning at OTA No.1 on May 19.

Then they will get the full Harbaugh experience.

"I see him as an old-school type of coach, and that's how I like things to be," said Mauigoa, who will begin his NFL journey at guard after starting all 42 games of his Miami career at right tackle. "Just hard, gritty, run through somebody, no cut corners."

Mauigoa is ready to run through somebody for somebody.

Moments after being drafted 10th overall, the 6-foot-6, 329-pound offensive lineman was asked live on national television if he had a message for Jaxson Dart.

"I'm ready to die for you," he said.

Mauigoa was talking to his new quarterback through the TV in the now-viral moment. Roughly 12 hours later, they met in person at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center.

"He was pumped about it," Mauigoa said. "He was juiced about it. He just told me about it. … It was awesome. I'm really excited to get it going with him, to block my ass off for him and get him to make plays. He's so down to earth, humble kid who loves fishing. Can't wait to get out on the water with him someday."

Hood, the second-round pick from Tennessee, knows better than most rookies about what it takes to play for Harbaugh. His uncle, Roderick Hood, played cornerback for nearly a decade in the NFL in the 2000s. It included four years with the Eagles while Harbaugh was their special teams coordinator.

"My uncle always told me how good of a person he was but also how hard of a coach he was and how good of a coach he was," Hood said. "Definitely somebody I want to be coached by and somebody I want to play for."

Fields, the second-oldest member of the draft class, grew up 150 miles from Baltimore in Charlottesville, Va.

"Just dudes that love to compete, love to win, have that winning mindset," he said of watching Harbaugh's teams over the years. "They're going out to win. Just the success he's had with that franchise with the Ravens, and him wanting to do the same thing here and believing in me and having me here to do that."

For the record, Harbaugh was 45 years, 11 months, and 15 days old for his first victory, which was also his NFL debut as a head coach.

He will be less than two weeks away from his 64th birthday when the Giants open the 2026 season.

"I think we have a bunch of Giants, figuratively and literally," Harbaugh said of the draft class. "We have guys that we really like that are going to make a difference."

John Harbaugh's 193 total victories, including a Super Bowl title, are tied for 12th in NFL history.
