Practice Report (6/5): Observations from Thursday's OTA

JALIN-HYATT-BOBS

The Giants held their sixth OTA at the Quest Diagnostic Training Center on Thursday. It felt like training camp with some haze and temperatures into the low 90s.

* Practice started with 7-on-7s and Russell Wilson hitting Jalin Hyatt on a quick slant. Wilson then tried to hit Hyatt with a deep pass, but Cor'Dale Flott had good coverage and prevented the catch. Jameis Winston made one of his best throws of camp, connecting with on a perfect pass over the top to Darius Slayton, who ran between the hash mark and numbers as Winston dropped the ball over his shoulder for the touchdown. Cornerback O'Donnell Fortune had a break-up on a pass intended for Da'Quan Felton.

* When team drills started, the defensive line, led by Brian Burns, began to take over practice. Burns batted a pass down at the line of scrimmage and would have had several sacks if players were in pads and practice was live. Kayvon Thibodeaux would also have had at least one sack. Abdul Carter showed his ability to line up in areas other than the edge, getting to the quarterback with a wicked spin through the middle of the offensive line. Carter also chased down Winston on a play he rolled out of the pocket. Elijah Chatman batted a ball down at the line of scrimmage, linebackers Darius Muasau and Chris Board had would-be sacks, and Chauncey Golston, Elijah Garcia, Trace Ford and Jordon Riley had pressures. Cornerback Nic Jones had a blitz that might have become a sack.

* The Giants secondary continued to fulfill defensive coordinator Shane Bowen's wish of taking the ball away. Cornerback Tre Hawkins had the first one, playing a back-shoulder throw to Da'Quan Felton perfectly. Dane Belton had another, anticipating a short throw, which he promptly returned the other way. Safety Makari Paige had the third and final interception, catching a pass that bounded off a Giants receiver.

*All those footballs were put into the turnover treasure chest on the sideline, which looks exactly like what you think a pirate's chest would look like. Shane Bowen explained the concept. The team needs more takeaways and Bowen decided (partly thanks to the fact his son is on a tee ball team called the Pirates) that it was a good device to use to motivate his guys to get the ball. "Be a damn pirate" is how he put it, citing that pirates take things away and are both aggressive and violent. Seems like something all good defenses should strive for.

* The offense made some plays of their own during team drills. Da'Quan Felton had a slick one-handed catch on a slant, reaching out in front of him and snatching the ball. Jaxson Dart has shown the ability to keep his head up while scrambling to find receivers while he climbs the pocket. Dart hit tight end Theo Johnson on a crosser for what would have been a big gain.

* After a very enthusiastic practice and tough heat led to some extra-curricular activities that forced practice to be cut a little short, the Giants are of until Monday when they have the first of their final four OTAs next week. Their only day without competitive work on the field will be Wednesday.
