WRAPPING UP WEEK VS. JETS

The Giants are preparing for their second preseason game of the year when they welcome the Jets to MetLife Stadium on Saturday. This weekend's game comes after two joint practices with the Jets earlier in the week, first in Florham Park (Tuesday) and then in East Rutherford (Wednesday).

It was a spirited two days as both teams got good work in against a new opponent in a controlled environment.

"Competitive practices," head coach Brian Daboll said Thursday about the joint sessions. "We got a lot out of these last two days as a football team. Good situational work, good work against new opponents, schemes. I was pleased with the way those last two practices went."

Despite two intense days of practice, Daboll said on Thursday that the competitive sessions won't have any impact on the coaching staff's decision on who plays Saturday.

"I wouldn't say it affects it," the head coach told reporters. "Again, we'll end up making the decision we think is best. There's no substitute for tackling. There's no substitute for cleaning the pocket. There's no substitute for run after catch when you're going to get hit. There's no substitute for being live as a quarterback in the pocket. But we'll end up deciding at the end of the day what we think is right for our team."

ALL-TIME SERIES

The New York Giants will host the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 16 for their first home game of the 2025 preseason. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET on WNBC.

In regular season play, the teams have met 15 times. The Giants lead the all-time series, 8–7. In their most recent meeting, the Jets defeated the Giants, 13–10, at MetLife Stadium.

The Giants' last regular season win over the Jets came on December 24, 2011 by a score of 29-14.

INJURY REPORT

NFL teams are not required to submit a formal injury report during the preseason, so we will not know which players are suiting up until Saturday.

With that said, offensive tackle Andrew Thomas and running back Eric Gray remain on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, while outside linebacker Victor Dimukeje is still on the non-football injury list. We know those three players will not play against the Jets.

As for the rest of the team, we'll have to wait and see.

"We're going to do, coaching staff wise, what we think is best for the guys," Daboll told reporters ahead of last week's game. "Their job is to play. If they're ready to play and we decide we're going to play them, we think that's the best and that's what we're going to do.

FIRST HOME GAME

The Giants will take the field at MetLife Stadium for the first time in the 2025 campaign on Saturday. The home crowd will get an opportunity to cheer the team on and see the rookies play in a game setting for the first time, something quarterback Jaxson Dart is looking forward to.

"I can't wait," the rookie said about playing at MetLife Stadium. "My first time going into the stadium was (for) the Zach Bryan concert, and I think just standing there and being able to look at all the great players' names in the stadium and then just kind of seeing the atmosphere and trying to picture what a sold-out stadium is going to be like and just the energy involved. I can't wait. It's going to be a lot of fun. I hope that the fans come out, and they're super passionate. I hope that we can make a home field advantage for us. But I can't wait, and I know that there's going to be a lot of energy for sure."

Dart later added, "I think the energy's super high. Everybody's super hungry, like I said earlier, to win, and I think that a lot of people feel like a certain energy around here. Obviously, I haven't been here, so I don't know what it's been like in the past, but I just feel like it's really positive. I know that we've got a group of guys who really want this, and we want to compete and play at the highest level we want to play in the biggest stages and win the biggest games. I think that what I see from the fans is they hold everybody to that standard, and I think that as a competitor you want to be a part of that because ultimately that's going to push you. You want to play for a passionate fan base, and you want to win."

BURNS STEPPING UP ON & OFF THE FIELD

The Giants made a big splash in the 2024 offseason when they traded for and then extended outside linebacker Brian Burns. The veteran fought through numerous injuries throughout his first season with the organization and still managed to finish with eight sacks and 18 quarterback hits, in addition to either tying or setting new career-highs with 17 tackles for loss and eight passes defensed.

Now heading into Year 2 with the Giants, Burns has established himself as a leader both on and off the field. His production speaks for itself, and his excellent work ethic has been on full display each and every day at practice, something his head coach believes is beneficial for the whole team to witness.

"I think it's important for everybody to see it," Daboll said about Burns' performance. "He's had a very good camp. Not just some of the improvements that he's made and the techniques and the things he works on diligently, but I would say how he's approached every day. His finish stands out. I show a couple of clips of Burns almost every day of what he's doing at practice and the standard that he's creating for not just his position room, for the entire team to see. He's done good off the field for us. He's done good on the field for us throughout training camp, throughout the offseason program. He's been a very good leader for us since we've been back here starting in April."

LAST GAME VS. JETS

The Giants and Jets meet for a preseason matchup every year. In last year's outing, quarterback Tommy DeVito threw for 103 yards while adding a team-high 48 yards on the ground on five rush attempts. Finishing right behind DeVito was running back Dante Miller, who finished the game with 14 carries for 45 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker K.J. Cloyd, whom the Giants recently resigned, racked up a game-high 16 tackles (eight solo), including two tackles for loss, while outside linebacker Tomon Fox recorded one sack, two tackles for loss and three quarterback hits.

On special teams, kicker Jude McAtamney connected on both of his field goal attempts, one from 43 yards and the other from 23. Punter Jamie Gillan averaged 49.3 yards on his six punts, including a long of 57 yards.

PLAYER TO WATCH

All four Giants quarterbacks put up solid numbers in the preseason opener, due in part to the performance of the offensive line. One of the most impressive players up front in last week's game was rookie fifth round pick Marcus Mbow. Touted for his versatility, Mbow showcased his ability to play multiple positions by beginning at right tackle, moving over to left tackle, and then moving back over to the right side.

Not only did he display positional versatility, but he also performed well at each spot. Mbow was on the field for 35 pass-blocking snaps and surrendered only one total pressure, according to Pro Football Focus.

"I thought he did a good job, protected well, is athletic, knew all the plays, the assignments that he had," Daboll said about Mbow's outing in Buffalo. "He's had a good camp up to this point. We played him on both sides and he's done a nice job since he's been here."

MATCHUP TO WATCH

We saw some great matchups between the Giants and Jets at the two joint practice sessions, especially in the trenches. The Giants' vaunted defensive front played well against the Jets' offensive line, consistently winning one-on-one matchups. But as we know, you can't actually finish taking down the quarterback at practice. Saturday's game is another story.

The Giants' pass rush should get another opportunity to show its growth this Saturday against the Jets, although the true test won't come until the regular season, according to Brian Burns.

"We look good," the veteran edge rusher said about the defensive front. "We look good so far. True testament is Week 1 though. Preseason, practice, joint practice, all that (stuff is) cool but when the bullets flying for real and the spotlight really on us, that's when we need to show."

JET TO WATCH

The Giants underwent some big changes at quarterback this offseason, but they were not the only team to see a transformation at the most important position. While the Giants signed Russell Wilson to start at quarterback, the Jets went after the player Wilson shared the Pittsburgh QB room with last season in Justin Fields.

Wilson and Fields found themselves in a quarterback competition at this time last summer. But this weekend, they will be looking at each other from opposite sidelines. Nonetheless, it is clear both signal-callers are grateful for their time with the other.

"I learned a lot," Fields said about his one season playing with Wilson. "There's no one specific thing that stood out. I think just how he goes about his everyday business, you can really see just how he operates and stuff like that. So, really just trying to take bits and pieces of what he does and implement it into my game, my routine and everything like that."

"We're grateful just to be able to play this game, what we love to do," Wilson added on Tuesday. "We're both tremendous competitors. He's tremendously talented, and I'll always have his back and all that, and vice versa."

Similar to Wilson, Fields saw limited action in the Jets' preseason opener. He attempted just four passes and completed three of them for 42 yards while adding two carries for 14 yards and a touchdown. Look for Fields to get an extended look this Saturday as we inch closer to the start of the regular season.
