The Athletic's best scheme fits from 2026 NFL Draft

The Athletic's Ted Nguyen recently broke down the 10 best scheme fits from the 2026 NFL Draft.

Landing all the way at the top of the list was Ohio State linebacker Arvel Reese's fit with the Giants.

"Reese's tape playing inside linebacker was superb, and he should make an immediate impact on the second level," wrote Nguyen. "Going to a team where he doesn't have to play full time on the edge will benefit him. The team also signed linebacker Tremaine Edmunds to be the mike linebacker, which will free up Reese to move around the front."

Playing under new Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, Reese had a breakout season for the Buckeyes in 2025. The talented linebacker totaled 69 tackles, including 10 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, five quarterback hurries and two pass breakups.

"Arvell is a versatile player, and we're going to play him at inside backer, Will linebacker," head coach John Harbaugh said Thursday night. "Our defense is pretty flexible, position-less you might call it. We'll have an opportunity to move those guys around. But he'll line up next to Tremaine, and he'll be in the A gap, the B gap, the C gap, the D gap, off the edge. He'll be moving around with all of our guys. Abdul (Carter) and Brian (Burns) and Kayvon (Thibodeaux) and Tremaine.

"We'll be running games and picks and stunts and different things like that on passing situations, and he's good in coverage as well, he's a versatile player. He's a young player. He's gotten better every single year, playing off the ball and on the ball, so he does both. Probably why he was our highest rated non- quarterback player in the draft. He's an exciting player. We are fired up to have him."

Reese's 2025 performance led to him being named Consensus All-American in addition to the Big Ten Conference's Butkus-Fitzgerald Linebacker of the Year and first-team All-Big Ten.

During his three years at Ohio State, Reese was also a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

"Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson is from the Mike Macdonald tree," Nguyen added. "They believe in teaching players the entire defensive call and what everyone is doing so they can move around to create complexity. The collection of players they have could be a nightmare for opposing offenses to sort out in pass-rush situations."

The Giants' 2026 draft picks have arrived at their new home.

The Giants take the field for the start of Phase 2 of the offseason workout program at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center.
