Tidbits from Giants postgame locker room

Giants coach Tom Coughlin on where his team fell short:

  • "Up until halftime it was a very, very good and competitive football game.  To start the second half off with an interception and touchdown…that's a tough way to start the second half.  We were battling even then, to be in a position to kick the field goal and have the field goal blocked – which were contributing factors there as well – that was extremely disappointing and that very well may have changed the complexion of the game completely there."*

S Antrel Rolle elaborated on the second half:

  • "I wouldn't say that something is off.  There are times when we shut them down and there were times when they made good plays. They get paid just like we do.  At the end of the day we tried to be effective with what we do as a unit. I think it is more so about us and not so much about them."*

QB Eli Manning assessed the game:

"I've got to give credit to Washington.  They played a great game and did a lot of good things – some different looks.  We had a few things that we didn't connect on.  When things were open, we hit them for the most part – but they did a good job mixing up different looks.  On third down we're one-for-10.  That's a big part of the answer right there."

Manning also talked about the offensive line's effort on Sunday:

  • "I thought we were on the same page.  Everyone was doing the right thing.  They did a good job.  Some of the sacks weren't on them.  But, we have to look at the film.  I thought they did a good job and gave us a chance to make some plays."*

And in the opposing locker room …

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan commented on QB Rex Grossman's slow start:

"(The Giants) did something that they normally don't do – a lot of man-to-man and pressure early. It really challenged our offensive line and wide receivers. It was a good adjustment by them. It was something they hadn't shown a lot of and I was pleased with the way we adjusted."

The Giants had four sacks, and RB Tim Hightower talked about the performance of the running backs in the blocking game:*

"We missed some opportunities. We let Rex get hit too much. He did a great job of staying in there. That dude is tough, nobody can question his toughness. We have to do a better job. Our starting quarterback has to stay clean, running backs, tight ends and the offensive line – we all have to do a better job. Clearly you can see that if we can keep him upright, he'll find the right person."*
