25 Questions in 25 Days: Spring standouts

25Q-25DAYS-RUSS-SLAYTON-Q2

Giants.com is counting down to the start of 2025 Giants Training Camp with 25 questions in 25 days.

25) Who stood out at spring practices?

Dan Salomone: A reporter asked Brian Daboll this very question at the top of his final press conference before the team broke for summer. The head coach answered it like a head coach.

"I think everybody's done a good job of improving from where we started to where we are now," Daboll said. "We talked about that this morning. We made a lot of improvements in a number of areas, both individually and collectively as groups. That's what this time of year is for, and training camp will be here in 34 days, so we have to hit the ground running."

So there you have it. That is all you need to know. See you tomorrow for Question No. 23.

In all seriousness, though, there were certainly players who turned heads this spring.

On offense, it starts with Russell Wilson. His reputation as a both a passer and leader lived up to the hype – and then some. Just ask wide receivers Wan'Dale Robinson and Darius Slayton.

"Even the first time we threw, me and Slay were both like, this is actually better than we expected," Robinson said. "And so, no, we were ecstatic about it, and couldn't be more happy that he's our quarterback."

"His knowledge of the game has shown already," Slayton said. "Obviously, he has amazing talent with the ball. Accuracy, great touch on the deep balls. I don't really know that he's missed more than one or two deep balls this whole camp. He is really accurate, really smart. He's helped keep us in good plays throughout the whole camp. So, his impact has been felt for sure."

Back to the part about the deep passing game.

"I love going deep," Slayton said. "That's kind of how I made my name so to speak in the league was making plays down the field, but it's not just myself. All of us can run. Malik [Nabers] can run, Jalin [Hyatt] can run. Even, Wan'Dale's mini, his mini legs be moving, so he can run too. And it's shown over OTAs, it's shown, I think everybody's probably touched the ball down the field from us at some point. So, I think it'll help everybody be able to stretch the field and add some yards per catch."

Speaking of Hyatt, Wilson sees him as "a guy that's been untapped." Having the confidence of a player like that led to a productive spring for the third-year receiver, who put on 15-20 pounds of muscle this offseason.

On defense, safety Dane Belton put the "turnover chest" on the map this spring with a handful of interceptions. Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen has stressed takeaways for this upcoming season and will look to get Belton on the field in a crowded secondary.

"You'll hear our guys say it. I say it ad nauseam: Be a damn pirate," Bowen said. "We got to find ways to get the ball. And, again, you get what you emphasize. We're making it a priority this year to make sure we find ways to get the ball."
