10 things to watch in Giants vs. Titans

HARBAUGH-SALEH-10-THINGS

Here are 10 things to watch in the Week 3 matchup between the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans at MetLife Stadium (1 p.m. ET).

'The world keeps spinning'

The big story of the week was the news that Jaxson Dart will miss the remainder of the regular season due to the knee injury suffered during Monday's loss to the Rams. It's a tough blow for Dart, who became the first quarterback in NFL history with at least three passing touchdowns, 50 rushing yards and a passer rating of 130+ in the season opener. But with 15 games left on the schedule, the show must go on, as coach John Harbaugh told the media Wednesday.

"As we said, you wake up and you feel like it's the end of the world. Then you wake up and the world's not done," said Harbaugh. "The world keeps spinning. The games keep getting played. Nobody feels sorry for you. It's time to go play the next game. Sunday at one o'clock, the ball's going to get kicked off, and we're going to have to be the best football team we can be. And that's the thing, it's not a one-man game. Not like tennis, you don't forfeit. We're going to have our team out there. The Giants are going to roll out into that field out there and play the football game. And we need to be the best Giants we can be. And that's really the message that you have."

History vs. Titans

In regular-season play, the teams have met 13 times. The Giants lead the all-time series, 7-6. In their most recent meeting, the Giants defeated the Titans, 21-20, at Nissan Stadium in Week 1 of the 2022 season.

The Giants are looking for their first win against the Titans at home since Week 17 of the 1991 season when they defeated the Houston Oilers, 24-20.

Winston takes over at QB

Following the injury to Dart, Jameis Winston takes over as the team's starting quarterback. Winston has played in 109 games with 89 starts over his 12-year NFL career and has totaled 24,903 passing yards, 156 touchdowns and 114 interceptions. In relief of Dart on Monday night, he finished with 111 yards, no touchdowns and one interception while completing 40.7 percent of his passes.

However, the 32-year-old quarterback performed well with his two starts last season. Starting against the Packers and Lions in back-to-back weeks, Winston threw for 567 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while adding an additional score on the ground and another as a receiver.

"A big part of it is building a game plan now for Jameis," Harbaugh told the media Wednesday. "He'll be the starter. So, build the game plan for Jameis to suit his skill set. The game plan this last week was built for Jaxson, obviously. So, this will be an opportunity to do that, and that's exactly what we'll do. We'll build around all the things that he does well that are in the offense, which is – there's plenty in the offense. And then, of course, how to attack Tennessee and their defense and what they do, so that's what we'll be doing."

The Giants recently signed Wintson to a two-year contract extension which will keep him with the team through the 2028 season.

"It's truly a privilege," the veteran quarterback said about now being the starter. "I had this privilege for two games last year. It truly was an honor. But for this game alone, my focus is on being my very best, going out there and having elite fundamentals and precise execution. And that's what it starts with, and it's as simple as that. No matter how big it may seem, being present and focused on doing all that you can do with what you have, with where you are. For right now, that's keeping Jaxson's spirits uplifted and going out there on that football field and being the New York Football Giants starting quarterback right now."

Next man up

Dart wasn't the only player to suffer an injury against the Rams. Towards the end of the first quarter, wide receiver Malik Nabers briefly left the game due to a shoulder injury. However, the star wideout was able to return to the field and finish the game, and told reporters on Thursday he's "feeling good."

The other two key injuries occurred late in the game. Outside linebacker Brian Burns had his ankle rolled up on in the fourth quarter. The veteran was helped off the field and listed as questionable to return, although he did not step back on the field. Harbaugh described the veteran edge rusher as day-to-day earlier in the week. He did not participate in the first two practices of the week, putting his status for Week 3 in doubt.

"We are definitely blessed with depth at that position for sure," the head coach said about the team's outside linebackers. "So, Brian's day-to-day right now, we'll see how it goes for the game. But if he can't go, then we are very confident, to your point, in the guys that we have."

Starting left tackle Andrew Thomas also left the game late and was unable to return after suffering a groin injury in Los Angeles. Thomas was projected as a limited participant in Wednesday's walkthrough practice, but then did not practice on Thursday. His status for Week 3 remains up in the air.

Holland 'playing at a high level'

One of the biggest bright spots for the Giants to start the season has been Holland. The veteran safety, now in his second season with the team, has been all over the place for the Giants defense. He has 10 total tackles (seven solo) thus far, along with three takeaways, including a league-high two interceptions. He registered an interception of Dak Prescott in the season opener, and followed that up with an interception of Matthew Stafford, along with a forced fumble on Kyren Williams, which he recovered himself. Holland had a second forced fumble against the Rams, as well.

"He's playing at a high level," Harbaugh said earlier this week. "I mean, that play that he had where he punched the ball out and then recovered it, that's about as good as a play as you're ever going to see. He comes up with two turnovers in the game, had a turnover last week. And yet, he's upset, talking to him about the play or two that he wants back. Just played at a super high level. He's kind of expected it. That's who he hoped he – that's who I knew he was, really. And he's playing great football."

"He's a great football player," defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson added. "He is a player that I admired coming out. He's a player I admired before he came here to the Giants. He's a player that does all the little things correct. Jevon is making the plays he's supposed to make because he's in position. He's being where he's supposed to be and then once the ball is in the air, he's reacting violently to it. If they run it, he's reacting violently to the runs. So, you see in the work ethic that he's put in, you see in the things that he's worked on throughout this offseason, throughout the practice weeks, it's just coming to fruition. And I hope he continues to get better and he's an example of when you do all the little things correctly, good things happen to you."

Titans to keep an eye on

QB Cam Ward – The second-year pro played a lot better in Week 2 than in the season opener. Going up against a tough Eagles defense, Ward completed 13 of 20 passes for 183 yards with no turnovers and added two touchdowns on the ground.

WR Carnell Tate – Through the first two games of his NFL career, the fourth overall pick in this year's draft leads the Titans with seven receptions for 65 yards on 11 targets. The rookie has seen at least five targets in each of the first two games.

DT Jeffery Simmons – Simmons has established himself as one of the best interior defensive linemen in the NFL over the last few years. Named a first-team All-Pro in 2025, Simmons has recorded 10 total tackles (five solo), one sack, three quarterback hits and a pass breakup across the first two weeks of the season. In last week's loss to the Eagles, Simmons generated a team-high seven pressures, according to Next Gen Stats.

S Amani Hooker – The veteran safety has gotten his season off to a strong start. After picking up 10 total tackles, including one tackle for loss, in the season opener, Hooker had six total tackles (three solo) against the Eagles, along with an interception that he returned 92 yards to set up a Titans touchdown. He allowed two receptions for 30 yards in coverage.

Stats & milestones to know

QB Jameis Winston is looking to become the fifth quarterback taken No. 1 overall in the common draft era to earn a win on four different teams. The others are Vinny Testaverde (six), Jeff George (five), Baker Mayfield (four) and Michael Vick (four).

TE Isaiah Likely is one of four tight ends across the NFL with five or more receptions in each of the first two games (Dalton Kincaid, Sam LaPorta, Trey McBride).

LB Tremaine Edmunds registered his 60th career pass defensed last week, the most among linebackers since 2018.

S Jevón Holland is the first Giant to have an interception in his first two games of a season since linebacker Michael Boley started the 2012 campaign with three in a row. It was part of a Monday night performance in which Holland had an interception, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, a pass defensed and eight tackles. The last player to have that stat line was Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison on Nov. 5, 2007 against Baltimore.

K Dominic Zvada made his first two career field goal attempts from 24 and 52 yards. The 52-yarder is the third-longest field goal by a Giants rookie kicker behind Ali Haji-Sheikh, who made a pair from 56 yards in 1983.

P Jordan Stout punted the ball 78 yards early in the fourth quarter against the Rams. It was the second-longest punt by a Giant since 1991. Rodney Williams had a 90-yarder at Denver on Sept. 10, 2001. Monday night was the only time in the last 50 years that the Giants had a 70-yard punt and 50-yard made field goal.
