Here are 10 things to watch in the Week 7 matchup between the New York Giants and Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium (1 p.m. ET).
McCarthy's first start
Fueled by the late comeback attempt during last week's loss to the Saints, the Giants made a change at quarterback heading into Week 7.
J.J. McCarthy, fresh off his 243-yard fourth quarter effort, will make his first start as a member of the Giants, taking over for veteran Jameis Winston. McCarthy led the Giants to 17 unanswered points in the final 11 minutes of the game and came one completion short of completing the comeback. Despite arriving in East Rutherford less than a month ago, McCarthy has been able to pick up the offense quickly, giving the coaching staff confidence in him as they head to Houston.
"His operation is really, really good," offensive coordinator Matt Nagy told reporters Thursday. "When I say operation, what does that mean? It starts with listening to the play call in your headset, being able to say it and or read it on the wristband, get to the line of scrimmage, and then be a quarterback, see the formation, motion shifts, see the play clock, make your ID checks or whatever you do with the center, and then make a play. The operation right now, what he's doing is amazing. Then you throw in some of the throws that he made, not just when we're 70 yards away, but when we're in that red zone or when we're in a situation where you've got to make a throw. He did that, too. His demeanor has been really good for all four weeks. He's very eager to learn. He wants as much as he can get to digest within our offense."
Taking away his four spikes to stop the clock, McCarthy completed 11 of 17 passes for 243 yards, one touchdown and one interception while adding a 28-yard rush on the team's final drive. He completed seven of 10 passes downfield (10+ air yards) for 196 yards, the most by a quarterback since 2016, according to Next Gen Stats. On his four deep pass attempts (20+ yards), McCarthy went three of four for 119 yards and a touchdown.
"Just honored to be here in front of you guys, honored to be a quarterback for the New York Football Giants, and to be able to get an opportunity to go against a great Houston Texans team, and thrilled to get out there tomorrow, really get in the film room and just evaluate today's practice to get better and go from there..." McCarthy said Wednesday. "Every time you step on the field, it's an opportunity. Whether you're the starting guy, whether you're not, you have a chance to prove yourself, prove it to your peers, and prove it to everyone around you. And at the end of the day, I approach it the same way. How can I attack that next rep, how can I win this day and go from there."
History vs. Texans
In regular season play, the teams have met six times. The all-time series is led by the Giants, 5-1. In their most recent regular season meeting, the Giants defeated the Texans, 24-16, at MetLife Stadium in Week 10 of the 2022 season.
The Giants have won five straight against the Texans dating back to 2006. The Giants are looking for their longest winning streak against a non-divisional opponent since they defeated the Rams seven straight times from 2002-2016.

Nabers' dominance continues
For the third consecutive outing, wide receiver Malik Nabers topped the 100-yard mark in last week's matchup against the Saints. Nabers matched his previous career-high of 12 receptions, which he took for 165 yards, just six shy of his personal best. Through 25 career games, the young wideout now has 168 receptions, the second-most in NFL history trailing only Odell Beckham Jr. (176).
Nabers also became just the third player in NFL history with at least 10 receptions in five of his first 25 career games, while his three consecutive games with 100+ receiving yards marked just the seventh time the feat was accomplished by a Giant. His performance led to him being voted the FedEx Air & Ground Player of the Week Award, along with Chiefs running back Kenneth Walker.
Texans cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. is still one of the NFL's top shutdown cornerbacks, despite a bit of a slow start to his season. However, Stingley does not typically move inside, which means Nabers should have plenty of snaps without seeing coverage from the two-time first-team All-Pro. The 23-year-old receiver aligned in the slot on a season-high 41.3 percent of his routes against the Saints last week (compared to 19.0 percent of his routes through the first five games). He has registered the same amount of receiving yards from the slot as he has out wide this year, despite seeing less than a third of the number of targets from the slot (15 vs. 46). Additionally, Nabers' 4.7 receptions over expected from the slot is the most among all wide receivers, according to NGS.
Likely keeps rolling
Nabers isn't the only pass-catcher that has seen their production explode over the last few weeks. Isaiah Likely was right behind Nabers with 11 targets against the Saints, of which he caught six of them for 99 yards and a touchdown. Over the last three contests, the athletic tight end has seen double-digit targets every week, which has led to 24 receptions for 259 yards and three touchdowns.
In each of the last two games, Likely has finished with 90 or more receiving yards and at least one touchdown. His five touchdowns set a new record for the most by a Giants tight end in his first six games with the team, and with 12 games to go, Likely is already just one touchdown shy of his previous career-high of six set in 2024.
Matt Nagy has schemed advantageous matchups for Likely, just like he has with Nabers. The 6-foot-4 tight end has aligned in the slot on a career-high 76.8 percent of his routes this season, the second-highest rate among tight ends with at least 100 routes. On those plays in the slot, Likely has recorded 252 receiving yards, which ranks as the second-most among tight ends. Additionally, his four touchdowns from the slot are tied with Packers wide receiver Christian Watson for the most in the league.
Getting the run D back on track
In Week 5, the Commanders ran for 202 yards, led by quarterback Jayden Daniels' 103 yards and two touchdowns. This was followed with the Saints gaining 175 yards on 38 carries, good for an average of 4.6 yards per carry. Four different players totaled 32 yards or more on the ground, including running backs Kendre Miller, CJ Donaldson and Alvin Kamara, along with quarterback Tyler Shough, who also scored the Saints' lone rushing touchdown. Miller led the group with 70 yards on 20 carries (3.5 avg.), while the other three all finished with averages of 4.9 yards per carry or higher (Donaldson and Shough were both over 6.0 yards per carry).
The run defense did show signs of improvement late in the game. Miller was held to just 12 carries on his final six rush attempts, all of which came on the Saints' final three drives and all resulted in three-and-outs. Additionally, defensive lineman DJ Reader put together another strong performance. Pro Football Focus had Reader down for seven run stops, which is a statistic the analytics site uses to constitute a "failure" or a loss for the offense based on the down and distance. Not only did this lead to Reader being named to the PFF Team of the Week, but it also helped the veteran move all the way up to PFF's No. 1 ranked interior defensive lineman through the first six weeks of the season.
The Texans rank fourth in the NFL in passing yards compared to 25th in rushing yards through the first six weeks of the season, and starting running back David Montgomery may miss another game with the groin injury he suffered in Week 4. This could be a good opportunity for the run defense to get back on track before the Week 8 bye.
Texans to keep an eye on
QB CJ Stroud – Stroud is playing perhaps the best football of his career this season. He heads into Week 7 with back-to-back games with a completion percentage of 70+ percent, throwing for a total of 573 yards, four touchdowns and one interception during that span and a passer rating north of 107.0 in each one. On the season, Stroud has completed 65.3 percent of his passes for 1,714 yards, nine touchdowns and just one interception.
WR Nico Collins – Collins has been held to a total of just eight receptions for 130 yards over the last two weeks, but prior to that, the Texans star wideout had two consecutive strong outings. Collins caught seven passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns against the Cowboys, along with seven receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown against the Bills, with two weeks sidelined in between due to a hamstring injury. Now back at full health, Collins is a serious downfield threat, evidenced by his 14.7 average yards per receptions this year.
DE Will Anderson Jr. – Anderson failed to pick up at least a half-sack for the first time all season last week against the Jaguars. This came after this three-sack performance against the Titans in Week 5. Heading into Week 7, Anderson leads the NFL with 7.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss and finds himself firmly in the Defensive Player of the Year conversation. Between Anderson and fellow starting edge rusher Danielle Hunter, the two have combined for 21 quarterback hits this season.
CB Derek Stingley Jr. – Despite a bit of a slow start, Stingley has now gone four consecutive games without allowing more than 40 receiving yards, according to Pro Football Focus. The two-time first-team All-Pro cornerback is rounding into form, and the star cornerback is likely to match up against Malik Nabers whenever the wide receiver is lined up on the outside.
Stats & milestones to know
QB J.J. McCarthy has scrambled 19 times for 185 yards and three touchdowns since 2025, averaging a league-high 9.7 yards per scramble among quarterbacks with a minimum of 15 carries. During their win over the Jaguars last week, the Texans blitzed on 39.5 percent of Trevor Lawrence's dropbacks, their highest blitz rate of the season.
WR Malik Nabers now has 168 career receptions and surpassed Puka Nacua (159) for the second-most catches by a player in his first 25 career games in NFL history, trailing only Odell Beckham Jr. (176). Nabers is also the third player ever with at least 10 receptions in five of his first 25 career games, joining Brock Bowers and Lionel Taylor.
TE Isaiah Likely has the most touchdown receptions by a Giants tight end in their first six games with the team (five), and he sits just one touchdown shy of his previous career-high of six set in 2024. He needs only four more receptions and 95 more receiving yards to set new career-highs in both categories.
DL DJ Reader finished with a season-high six tackles (five solo) last week against the Saints, including his first tackle for loss of the year. According to PFF, Reader picked up seven run stops in Week 6, which matched his season total from the first five weeks. Six games into the season, Reader is PFF's highest-ranked interior defensive lineman.
CB Deonte Banks has at least one pass breakup in all four games in which he's played in and has eight on the season, tied for the second-most among outside cornerbacks and is already more than his season total last year (five). His 1.9 yards of separation per target trails only Buffalo's Christian Benford for the lowest in the NFL (1.7). Banks also ranks fourth among outside cornerbacks this season with a 42.9 percent tight window rate (less than 1 yard of separation when targeted).
CB Dru Phillips has five pressures, four of which were quick pressures, two sacks and four quarterback hits since Week 4. His six pressures on the season are tied for the most among slot cornerbacks heading into Week 7.
