10 things to watch in Giants vs. Cardinals

HOLLAND-MCBRIDE-10-THINGS

Here are 10 things to watch in the Week 4 matchup between the New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals at MetLife Stadium (1 p.m. ET).

'We're going to keep growing'

It may not have been the prettiest of games, but the Giants emerged victorious in the Week 3 matchup against the Titans. The offense finished with 238 total yards as both teams battled harsh weather conditions caused by last weekend's nor'easter.

It has been nearly two weeks since Jaxson Dart suffered a knee injury that cut short his sophomore campaign. In the first full game since the injury, veteran Jameis Winston completed 14 of 22 pass attempts for 118 yards, added a 15-yard run, and most importantly, did not turn the ball over. While the offense is still adjusting to the loss of their starting quarterback, coach John Harbaugh is confident the unit will continue to grow and improve.

"We're going to find ourselves," coach John Harbaugh told the media Monday. "I mean, we won the game. We did what we had to do to win the game and that's what we had to do. And I think Jameis did all the things as a quarterback that we needed to do to win that game, but that doesn't mean that's where we stand. We're going to keep growing. There's going to be new challenges in front of us.

"He's not going to be coming into a game kind of out of the blue, so to speak. Or is he going to be coming into a nor'easter every single week going forward here. So, I'm looking forward to seeing where we go and we'll build around. As we go too, we'll get a chance to build around Jameis' strengths, all that kind of stuff. So, I feel good about it."

History vs. Cardinals

In regular-season play, the teams have met 129 times. The Giants lead the all-time series, 81-46-2. In their most recent regular season meeting, the Giants defeated the Cardinals, 31-28, on the road in Week 2 of the 2023 season.

The Giants are looking for back-to-back wins against the Cardinals for the first time since consecutive wins in 2005 and 2008.

Replacing Burns

For the second consecutive week, the Giants lost a key contributor to a season-ending injury. Less than a week after Dart suffered a serious knee injury, outside linebacker Brian Burns, who battled through an ankle injury to suit up in Week 3, tore his ACL. The veteran edge rusher is set to have surgery.

"Big challenge for us," Harbaugh said about the injury. "I mean, not just a great player, which he is. I mean, in many ways the leader of the defense, I would say, just as a veteran leader and star player, also a worker, out front kind of guy in everything he does. Just, you hate to see it. I mean, and really for him, too. I mean, he was just such a rock for us. Just a tough deal, but it's one we've got to deal with… the fact that there's been, yeah, we've got our quarterback one week and probably our top defensive player, you might say, the next week is shocking. But you've got to overcome the shock, and you've got to get ready to play the next game and find a way to win the next game. That's what we'll be doing as a team."

It's next man up on the edge, which means Kayvon Thibodeaux will be joining Abdul Carter in a more prominent role moving forward. The Giants' pass rush will look to get after Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who has seen his efficiency drop significantly when facing pressure this season. Brissett has completed 66 of 84 passes (78.6 percent) for 501 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions for a 107.4 passer rating when not pressured. But those numbers drop to 16 of 33 (48.5 percent) for 151 yards, zero touchdowns, one interception and a 48.9 passer rating when facing pressure.

"What we just need to do is get on track up front in terms of the pass rush," Harbaugh said. "I mean, I think they're doing a really good job. All those guys have done a very good job against the run. We've been pretty darn consistent against the run. We've had a few runs against us in the second half of the last two games that we aren't happy about. But generally, we've been a good run defense. And we want to keep building on that. But we need to get to the quarterback more. ... We've got to keep finding ways to get the quarterback on the ground. And those two guys, obviously, are going to be a massive, massive part of that going forward."

Holland named NFC Defensive Player of the Month

Jevón Holland has gotten his second season with the Giants off to a dominant start. The veteran has registered an interception in every game, which has him tied for the league-lead, while his interception of Titans quarterback Cam Ward sealed the victory for the Giants in Week 3. He's also forced two fumbles, one of which he recovered, for four total takeaways in three games. This resulted in him being named the NFC Defensive Player of the Month.

"That's the kind of player Jevón Holland has always been," Harbaugh said Sunday's win. "So, to see him flourishing right now, the way he is, is just – it's wonderful."

Since 1970, Holland is one of just two players with at least three interceptions, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in the first three games of the season. As if that wasn't impressive enough, Holland is the only Giant in the last 30 years to force at least four turnovers in the first three games of a season. His four total takeaways lead all NFL players and are more than the total amount of takeaways of 18 different teams entering Week 4.

The safety has 112 coverage snaps this season and has allowed only two receptions for 18 yards, earning him a passer rating against of just 22.9. Holland will face his toughest test yet this weekend as a matchup against Cardinals Trey McBride looms large. The fifth-year tight end ranks third in the NFL with 26 receptions, which he has taken for 211 yards and two touchdowns. McBride is Jacoby Brissett's top option in the passing game and one of the elite players at the position, making this matchup between him and Holland one of the most intriguing of the week.

Latest roster moves

The Giants have made a flurry of roster moves this week, which began with the trade for quarterback J.J. McCarthy. After being selected with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, McCarthy missed his entire rookie campaign due to a knee injury. He returned to the field last season, where he started 10 games for the Vikings and completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,632 yards and 11 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. He also added 181 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 37 carries.

"Well, we've been talking about it ever since I think Jaxson got hurt, that we would need to add a quarterback, quarterbacks," Harbaugh said earlier this week about the trade. "That's part of the process. We've been turning over every stone. This was an opportunity that kind of came up and able to finish the deal off this morning, late morning. Really glad, really happy, very excited to add J.J. McCarthy. I think he's a strong, young quarterback, has some experience in National Football League. Obviously, was a very high draft pick, very talented player and is going to make us a stronger football team. So, excited about it, think it makes us better and get him in here as soon as we can. Get to work on learning the offense. Obviously, that's going to be a challenge, but we'll go to work on that and that's where we're at."

In addition to the trade for McCarthy, the Giants also signed wide receivers Braxton Berrios and Charlie Jones from the practice squad. Burns was placed on injured reserve and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was released.

The Giants also made an addition to the defense in the wake of Burns' injury, signing outside linebacker Jihad Ward off of the Vikings' practice squad. Ward spent two seasons with the Giants from 2022-2023. He played in 34 games with 20 starts during that stretch and totaled 67 tackles (44 solo), 12 tackles for loss, eight sacks, 22 quarterback hits, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and four passes defensed.

The 32-year-old entered the league as a second-round pick (No. 44 overall) of the Raiders in 2016. He has spent time with the Raiders (2016-17), Colts (2018-2019), Ravens (2019-2020), Jaguars (2021), Giants (2022-2023), Vikings (2024), Titans (2025) and had just recently signed back to the Vikings practice squad a few weeks ago. His career totals include 199 tackles (105 solo), 29 tackles for loss, 24 sacks, 95 quarterback hits, three forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, and 12 passes defensed in 136 games (49 starts).

Ward played in 21 games in Baltimore under head coach John Harbaugh and also spent the 2025 season in Tennessee with defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson. Playing in all 17 games for the Titans last season, Ward set a new career-high with 22 quarterback hits and matched his previous career-best marks of five sacks and four passes defensed.

Cardinals to keep an eye on

RB Jeremiyah Love – After easing the rookie in during his first two NFL games, the Cardinals relied heavily on the No. 3 overall pick last week. And Love delivered. The 21-year-old took 21 carries for 90 yards (4.3 avg.) and added five receptions for 19 yards and a touchdown. In last week's game against the 49ers, Love generated 1.7 yards before contact per carry as he was hit at or behind the line of scrimmage on a season-low 28.6 percent of his runs, according to Next Gen Stats.

TE Trey McBride – McBride serves as Jacoby Brissett's top option in the passing game. The athletic tight end leads the team with 26 receptions for 211 yards and two touchdowns, one year after finishing second in the NFL with 126 receptions. McBride has aligned in the slot on 73.1 percent of his routes this season and has been targeted on 32.9 percent of those plays, the fourth-highest rate among all pass-catchers this year. He has caught 19 of his 25 slot targets for 162 yards, both of which lead all tight ends, along with one touchdown, per NGS.

WR Michael Wilson – Wilson saw double digit targets in five of his last eight games in 2025 before seeing seven targets in each of the first two weeks this season. That changed in Week 3, as the fourth-year wideout led the team with 17 targets, of which he caught 11 of them for 89 yards and a touchdown. His 26.3 percent target rate thus far is the highest of his young NFL career.

S Budda Baker – The eight-time Pro Bowl safety does a little bit of everything for the Cardinals' defense. Through three games, Baker has totaled 20 tackles (12 solo), 1.5 sacks, two quarterback hits and a pass defensed. After allowing six receptions for 117 yards and two touchdowns in Week 2, Baker surrendered just one reception for one yard last week, although the lone catch did go for a touchdown, according to Pro Football Focus.

Stats & milestones to know

RB Cam Skattebo generated a season-high 74 yards after contact against the Titans last week, which was the second-most of his young career. Meanwhile, his 30.0 percent forced missed tackle rate was the third-highest single-game rate of his career.

OL Sisi Mauigoa has surrendered just four total pressures on 97 pass block snaps, tied for the fewest among all rookies with 40+ pass block snaps. Mauigoa is credited with zero sacks allowed on the season.

S Jevón Holland is one of just two players with at least three interceptions, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in the first three games of the season. As if that wasn't impressive enough, Holland is the only Giant in the last 30 years to force at least four turnovers in the first three games of a season. His four total takeaways lead all NFL players and are more than the total amount of takeaways of 18 different teams entering Week 4.

LB Arvell Reese has registered 24 tackles without any misses, according to Next Gen Stats. He is one of six players and the only rookie this season to make 100 percent of his tackles (minimum 20 tackles).

P Jordan Stout is the first punter in Giants history to have multiple punts of 70 or more yards in the same season, and he did it in back-to-back games in the first month of the season.

K Dominic Zvada last week became the sixth rookie to make all of his field goal attempts and account for all points scored in a win in the Super Bowl Era. Zvada is now perfect on six attempts this season in addition to four extra points.

What's next?

After back-to-back home games, the Giants will hit the road in Week 5 for a divisional matchup against the Washington Commanders. It will be the Giants' second game against the NFC East this season, with their first coming in the Week 1 win over the Cowboys.

The Commanders picked up their first win of the season last week when they defeated the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks, 33-31. This came after opening the season up with consecutive divisional losses, first to the Eagles and then to the Cowboys, both on the road. They travel to London in Week 4 for a matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.
