5 things to know about WR Darnell Mooney

DARNELL-MOONEY-FA

The New York Giants officially signed wide receiver Darnell Mooney.

Here are five things to know about the veteran wideout.

1. After being selected in the fifth-round (No. 173 overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft, Mooney has played in 91 games with 80 starts for the Chicago Bears (2020-2023) and Atlanta Falcons (2024-2025). His career totals include 309 receptions for 4,028 yards and 17 touchdowns with another 59 yards and an additional touchdown on the ground.

2. Mooney's best season came in 2021 while playing under Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, who at the time was the head coach and offensive play-caller of the Bears. Appearing in all 17 games (14 starts) that season, the 5-foot-11, 180-pound wideout set career-high marks in receptions (81) and receiving yards (1,055) along with four touchdowns.

3. The veteran receiver had another strong performance in his first year with the Falcons in 2024. Across 16 games, Mooney caught 64 passes for 992 yards and a career-best five touchdowns. Mooney broke his collarbone on the first day of training camp last season, former Falcons head coach Raheem Morris told the media later in the year, which forced the wideout to miss most of the summer and Week 1. The injury derailed his season as he ended the year with 32 receptions for 443 yards and one touchdown.

4. Prior to being drafted, Mooney played four seasons at Tulane University where he played 50 games and totaled 154 receptions for 2,572 yards and 19 touchdowns. As a junior in 2018, he recorded single-season highs with 47 receptions, 993 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on his way to being named second-team All-AAC.

5. While at Tulane, Mooney majored in applied counseling. During his time at Gadsden City High School (Alabama), he led his program to a pair of state playoff appearances while playing both wide receiver and defensive back.

Mooney was named an Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 7A First-Team All-State selection after his senior season. In addition to his success on the football field, Mooney also played point guard on the basketball team, where he led his school to three state playoff appearances.
