5 things to know about WR Calvin Austin III

CALVIN-AUSTIN-FA

The New York Giants have officially signed wide receiver Calvin Austin III.

Here are five things to know about the 26-year-old wideout.

1. Austin was drafted in the fourth-round (No. 138 overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. After missing his entire rookie campaign due to a foot injury, Austin played in 48 games with 16 starts over the last three seasons for the Steelers. He amassed 84 receptions for 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns and also returned 72 punts for 639 yards (8.9 avg.) and one touchdown.

2. The 5-foot-9, 162-pound wideout had his best season as a receiver in 2024 when he played in all 17 games with eight starts. Austin finished the season with 36 receptions for 548 yards and four touchdowns, all of which are career-high marks.

3. The 2024 campaign was also Austin's strongest as a returner. He took back 28 punts for 289 yards and scored the only special teams touchdown of his career, which happened to come on a 73-yarder against the Giants. Austin followed that up with a 29-yard touchdown reception later in the contest, marking the only multi-touchdown game of his young career.

4. Prior to being drafted by the Steelers, Austin played in 49 games at the University of Memphis from 2018-2021. During that time, he caught 156 passes for 2,541 yards and 22 touchdowns and also returned 29 punts for 323 yards and an additional touchdown.

Austin finished his collegiate career ranking second all-time in program history in receiving touchdowns, fourth in receiving yards, and fifth in receptions. He was named first-team All-AAC in both 2020 and 2021.

5. In addition to his success on the football field, Austin also had an impressive track career at Memphis. He was named 2019 U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America second-team (4x100m relay), 2019 All-American Athletic Conference (4x100m relay), 2018 USTFCCCA All-America honorable mention (4x400m relay), and 2018 All-American Athletic Conference four times (indoor 200m, 4x400m relay; Outdoor 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay). On top of that, Austin ran a school-record 39.19 seconds in winning silver at the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championships.

In high school, Austin earned a spot on the 2016 Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) D2A All-State first team, and was twice named the D2A West 1 Special Teams Player of the Year (2015,2016). He was also a nine-time state champion in sprints/relays, seven-time TSWA All-State honoree, and set five school records in track.
