The New York Giants opened up the preseason with a 34-25 road victory over the Buffalo Bills.
It was a strong performance by the offense as all four quarterbacks led scoring drives, including three touchdown passes from the group.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Giants as joint practices with the Jets begin on Tuesday. The preseason wraps up with two games at MetLife Stadium, next Saturday against the Jets and the following Thursday against the Patriots.
Coach Brian Daboll and several players spoke to the media following the preseason win in Buffalo. General manager Joe Schoen also joined Bob Papa and Carl Banks in the broadcast booth during the second half, as well.
Here is what we learned.
'We're going to play in the preseason'
A big topic of conversation with the media all week was whether or not the Giants' starters would take the field in Buffalo. In the end, all of the team's healthy starters took part in Saturday's game for various lengths of time. Looking to break away from the slow starts in the previous two seasons, the head coach decided to switch his preseason strategy from recent years.
"I thought we needed that," Daboll said. "We'll do it again. We're going to play in the preseason. People that are able to play are going to play, and if they're not able to play or a doctor or a trainer says it'd be smart to hold them out, we'll hold them out, but other than that, we're going to play."
"We've got to be ready to play when September comes," Schoen added.
The Giants will take part in joint practices with the Jets on Tuesday (Florham Park) and Wednesday (East Rutherford) ahead of their preseason matchup next Saturday (August 16 at 7 p.m.). The two teams competed against each other in joint practices last year, which led to some good work for both sides of the ball.
"I expect good, competitive practices with that group," Daboll said. "Try to take another step. Still a way to go, but beats the alternative."

Dart looks strong in NFL debut
We're going to get to all of the quarterbacks' performances later, but since it was his very first taste of an NFL game, Jaxson Dart will lead us off. The moment did not look too big for the 22-year-old quarterback, who put together an encouraging outing, both as a passer and on the ground. Dart finished the game with 154 yards and a touchdown on 12 of 19 passing, good for a passer rating of 106.0, while also leading the team with 24 rushing yards on three carries (8.0 avg.).
"Just about what I thought he would do," Daboll said on Dart's performance. "Efficient, effective, aggressive, confident in the pocket. Some stuff we can work on, but he's doing good.
"Look, there's things he can be better at, but we missed some opportunities on third down, some drops that would have even been better for him and for us. But he's a confident young player. He's improved since he's been here. Still have a long way to go, but I enjoy working with him. I like his demeanor on the sideline. He sees the game well."
What's important is not only that Dart played well in his first NFL game, but it's also about how confident he played. The rookie commanded the huddle and operating the offense like a seasoned veteran, due largely to the preparation that was put in leading up to Saturday.
"I expect myself to play well whenever I'm on the field," Dart said. "I don't expect myself to not play well. So, I was just trying to operate the offense and get the ball out of my hands pretty quickly to get guys the ball in space for them to make plays. And I thought they did a great job at it. Just kind of try to stack these and the more reps that I feel like I'm going to get, I'm going to get more and more comfortable…
"I felt really prepared coming into this week and just the preparation I put into each and every day. I felt like when I got out there on the field, it was just football at that point."
"We saw that on tape at Ole Miss, though," Daboll added. "He did that for a long time there. He's tough. I told you, good moxie. He's got toughness. He's got leadership. I think we threw the ball 51 times and didn't have a sack today. Credit the offensive line first and foremost."
All QBs lead scoring drives
As mentioned earlier, all four quarterbacks played well against the Bills. Each of the four signal-callers led the offense to points, starting with Russell Wilson. The 36-year-old wasn't on the field much in the preseason opener as he played just one offensive series. The veteran quarterback completed 6 of 7 passes for 28 yards as he led the offense down to field goal range.
"Being a pro and a vet that's been doing it for a long time, you can feel that at practice, you can feel that out there today," Schoen said in the broadcast booth. "The ball just comes out quick. There aren't any defenses that he hasn't seen before. He's got very good command of the offense, and I feel like you felt that today."
After 13 years in the league, the Giants didn't need to see much from Wilson on Saturday, although the quarterback was happy he got to take the field.
"I thought we did a good job," Wilson told reporters. "I thought our consistency throughout the whole game made some plays. I thought it was good to be out there, just be with the fellas and obviously to be a New York Giant, what a blessing it is to lead these guys and be a part of that. I think that every week we just want to keep getting better.
"It's so funny because I think these preseason games mean so much, just being able to get out there and the culture in the locker room to pregame warmups, to the whole rhythm of how we do that and how we do that really well. And I thought we did a great job of that, even on the sideline, game on the line, just everybody was in tune."
After Dart finished out the first half, Jameis Winston was under center to start the third quarter. Winston was on the field for three drives, the final one ending with a 7-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Gunner Olszewski. Winston finished the game 7 of 11 for 62 yards and the score for a 108.9 passer rating while adding a 12-yard run.
Tommy DeVito was the fourth signal-caller to take the field for the Giants. The third-year QB completed 10 of 14 passes for 73 yards and a touchdown, finishing with a 107.1 passer rating.
Perhaps most importantly, the quarterbacks combined for 51 pass attempts and yet did not take a single sack. In fact, the offensive line surrendered just nine total pressures in the game, according to Pro Football Focus. Wilson credited the guys up front for their standout performance.
"I thought the O-line did a great job," said the veteran quarterback. "The ones kept space, some really good players on the defensive line for them. They did a good job keeping space for me. Receivers got open quickly in an on-time manner. That's all part of it as well. They have great confidence in our offensive line. They go against the best guys in the world every day, and that makes us better too. We have guys that are experienced guys. ... I think we just got a lot of great confidence. I think (offensive line coach) Carm's (Bricillo) a great teacher in the game. They create that space for us, allows us to make a lot of throws."
Rookie class steps up in first game
While Dart's performance will garner the most headlines, he was far from the only rookie to have a good day. Outside linebacker Abdul Carter was only on the field for a handful of snaps, but the No. 3 overall pick certainly made his presence felt, picking up a pressure on each of his three pass rushes. Carter got past four-time Pro Bowl tackle Dion Dawkins several times as he got into the face of Bills quarterback Mitch Trubisky.
"I thought both of those guys did a good job," Joe Schoen said about Dart and Carter. "I saw Abdul, he looks like he got a couple pressures. I'll have to go back and see the film afterwards. And then Jaxson did a good job operating the offense, and I was glad he was able to get the two-minute drill in there in the end. I'm happy with where both of those guys are."
"It definitely didn't seem too big for them," Daboll added about the two first-round picks. "And that's what it seemed like this spring, in training camp, each day they're continuing to get better. You've never felt like it was too big for either of those guys."
Offensive lineman Marcus Mbow, the team's fifth-round pick, got an expanded look against the Bills. Since the Giants selected him on Day 3, the team has been praising his positional versatility. We got a preview of that on Saturday as Mbow saw snaps at both tackle positions. The rookie tackle allowed just one total pressure on 35 pass blocking snaps, according to PFF.
"We were talking at halftime like it's been kind of quiet over there on the right side," Schoen said on the broadcast. "It seems like Mbow is doing a good job. We'll have to watch the film, but he's done a good job thus far. When we don't recognize them, you don't hear their name, that's typically a good thing at the tackle position."
Rookie tight end Thomas Fidone II also made some plays as he finished with three receptions for 22 yards, in addition to a two-point conversion. Fidone made an eye-opening grab when he pulled in a pass with one hand in the second half.
Despite the overall performance, Daboll told the media there is still a lot of work to be done, both with the rookies and the rest of the team.
"With all of these, with the rookies, with our team, with everything, again, let's take it for what it's worth. It's one preseason game," the head coach said. "There's some good stuff, and there's a lot of things we need to correct, and that's what our job is to do, is to leave here and go home and some of the guys played a fair amount and make sure they're ready to go and then come back on practice and improve the things we need to improve on, which we can learn a lot from this tape, a lot.
