What We Learned: Jaxson Dart 'can't wait' to play in front of home fans

JAXSON-DART-KONICA

After practicing in Florham Park on Tuesday, the Giants were back at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center Wednesday for Day 2 of joint practices with the Jets.

It was a spirited session on Wednesday as both teams got in good work on a hot, sunny day.

Coach Brian Daboll met with reporters before practice, followed by outside linebackers Brian Burns and Abdul Carter and quarterback Jaxson Dart after the session.

Here is what we learned Wednesday.

Dart: 'I can't wait' to play in front of home crowd

With less than a month to go until the season opener, rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart has already had plenty thrown his way. The first-year quarterback has practiced in front of Giants fans at the Quest Diagnostics Training center, he's practiced in front of opposing fans in Florham Park, and he's played a game in front of "Bills Mafia" in Orchard Park this past weekend.

The only thing remaining is to take the field at MetLife Stadium in front of the home crowd. The 22-year-old expressed his excitement about finally getting to play a home game in front of Giants fans this weekend.

"I can't wait," Dart shared to the media. "My first time going into the stadium was (for) the Zach Bryan concert, and I think just standing there and being able to look at all the great players' names in the stadium and then just kind of seeing the atmosphere and trying to picture what a sold-out stadium is going to be like and just the energy involved. I can't wait. It's going to be a lot of fun. I hope that the fans come out, and they're super passionate. I hope that we can make a home field advantage for us. But I can't wait, and I know that there's going to be a lot of energy for sure."

Since the start of the offseason workout program back in April, countless players have spoken about there being a different feel around the locker room than in previous seasons. This is due to the numerous additions made to the roster this year, which includes the rookie quarterback. Dart told the media how those positive vibes seemed to have been extended to the fans, as well, something he can't wait to see for the first time on Saturday.

"I love the support each and every day that we're able to have practices that they're able to come watch," said the rookie quarterback. "I think the energy's super high. Everybody's super hungry, like I said earlier, to win, and I think that a lot of people feel like a certain energy around here. Obviously, I haven't been here, so I don't know what it's been like in the past, but I just feel like it's really positive.

"I know that we've got a group of guys who really want this, and we want to compete and play at the highest level we want to play in the biggest stages and win the biggest games. I think that what I see from the fans is they hold everybody to that standard, and I think that as a competitor you want to be a part of that because ultimately that's going to push you. You want to play for a passionate fan base, and you want to win."

Burns learning from Dex

Anyone that has attended a training camp practice this summer has likely noticed the play of Brian Burns. The veteran outside linebacker has played like a man on a mission all summer, giving 110 percent during each practice while also emerging as a leader on the defense. This was evidenced the other week when Burns made a tremendous hustle play deep down the field which resulted in an accidental collision with Wan'Dale Robinson.

Burns had already established himself as a talented pass rusher before arriving in East Rutherford. The 27-year-old registered 8.5 sacks in his first season as a Giant last year, despite playing through injuries all year. The veteran said he is looking to take his game to another level this season, and he's doing this by taking some pointers from the most accomplished member of the defense – defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence.

"I'm just trying to take my game to a level it's never been," Burns said. "That requires me doing things I never did. I've been working with Dex quite a bit, talking to Dex a lot (about) just how to manipulate body positions and try to use my length and power more and not just my speed and finesse. That's been good to me so far so I'm going to keep working on that."

Burns added: "It's always been an uphill battle with me trying to add that into my game but Dex is one of the best to do it and the way he does it – I mean, obviously he has brute strength but he's so much smarter than that. He's such a master at manipulating body positions and of course it takes strength to do that but it also takes length and technique and that's something that he works constantly but when I see him working and when he expressed that he wanted to help me in that area, shoot, why not? Everybody is trying to get better, so why not?"

Burns isn't the only player on the defensive front learning from the three-time Pro Bowl lineman. Abdul Carter came to the podium right after Burns and expressed a similar sentiment.

"He sits right behind me in the meeting room so I'm always talking with him trying to get better," the rookie outside linebacker said about Lawrence. "He helps me a lot."

Carter on defense's practice mentality: 'No days off'

As a rookie, Abdul Carter is soaking up as much information as possible from as many of his teammates as he can. The 21-year-old touched on Lawrence's mentorship while speaking to the media, but then went into more detail on what he's learned from the veteran in the outside linebackers room – Brian Burns.

"If you want to pick a guy, like a perfect guy to watch in terms of how you practice, how you prepare and just how you play the game and show your love for the game, he's a guy I'd say you watch…" Carter said about Burns. "He's a freak athlete obviously, but it's the things that you can control like his effort, his energy, his leadership, things like that."

The hustle play he made downfield towards the beginning of training camp is the perfect example of Burns leading by example, but it is far from the only one. Burns admitted to the media that he's already a little nicked up, although he quickly added that it's nothing he can't handle. Despite this, the veteran has still been out on the practice field each and every day practicing in full, a mindset that has already rubbed off on the rookie outside linebacker.

"It's just no days off," Carter said about Burns leading by example while playing through an ailment. "That's our mentality. That's how we try to do it. Everybody's going through something. Everybody's hurt. Everybody's banged up. You just have to come out here and push through it."
