What We Learned: Offense stays hot in win

RUSSELL-WILSON-KONICA

The Giants continued their strong summer play Saturday night with a 31-12 win over the Jets to bring their preseason record to 2-0.

For the second consecutive week, the offense topped the 30-point mark, and several players took advantage of their opportunities.

Coach Brian Daboll spoke to reporters at the podium for his postgame press conference, which was followed by media sessions with quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jaxson Dart along with outside linebacker Abdul Carter.

Here is what we learned.

Offense stays hot in win

The Giants' struggles on offense over the last few years have been well-documented. Last year, it took until the Week 17 win over the Indianapolis Colts for the Giants to top the 30-point mark (they scored 45 against Indianapolis). While it is only the preseason, the early results have to be encouraging for Daboll. After finishing with 396 total yards against the Bills in the opener, the offense racked up 478 yards against the Jets.

Daboll has played the starting offense in both games to open the preseason, something he did not do in previous years. Part of the reason for that is the presence of veteran Russell Wilson under center. Since the start of training camp, some of the offensive playmakers have spoken about how Wilson helps bring clarity to the offense. He's a 14-year veteran that has enjoyed a ton of success in the NFL, and his understanding of the offense has helped simplify things for the guys around him, despite this being his first year in the system. While some people might take this for granted, Wilson understands the importance of everyone being on the same page, which starts with him.

"I think clarity equals confidence," Wilson said after the win. "I think confidence equals success. I think a lot of times in this game there's so much terminology, there's so much this and that, and I think as a veteran, as a leader, as a guy who's played a lot of ball, I think the quarterback-receiver, quarterback-o-line, the quarterback-running back, all the tight ends, we're all working every day to be our best daily. And I think a lot of that is just communication, the coaching staff does a great job.

"I think (assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Mike Kafka) is doing a great job of leading us. I think Dabs does a great job too. I think (quarterbacks coach) Shea (Tierney) in our quarterback room. We have great communication and just I think all of it becomes the passion and obsession with the game. I think we've got one of the best offensive line coaches in (offensive line coach) Carm(en Bricillo) in terms of how he teaches the game and so we're just all communicating at a high level. That's what makes this game fun and when you can put the pieces together and then to do it on the field and to do it in practice and continue to be constantly on that quest for knowledge and constant quest and searching for more, that's the fun part. So, I think it's a great blessing to lead a great group of guys."

Wilson was on the field for four drives Saturday night and did what he's been showing us on a nearly daily basis at practice. The veteran quarterback uncorked one of his famous moon balls down the field, which traveled 54 yards in the air and dropped right into the waiting arms of wide receiver Beaux Collins, who took it all the way down to the one-yard line for an 80-yard gain.

"What a great ball by Russ, right?," Daboll said to the media. "Eighty-yard bomb, dropped it in the bucket. Great protection by the offensive line off an action pass. Really just great vision by Russ to lay it up there and we were an inch short, whatever it was."

Dart 'growing every day'

He is only two preseason games into his NFL career, but the early results for rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart have been encouraging. The 22-year-old followed up last week's strong outing with another dominant performance, capped off by a streak of 13 consecutive completions. Dart finished the game 14 of 16 (87.5 percent) for 137 yards, one touchdown and a 123.2 passer rating. He also added five yards and an additional touchdown on the ground.

"He's still got a lot to learn but he's growing every day," said Daboll. "Like I said, that's why we drafted him. We spent a lot of time with him, have a lot of confidence in the young man. He's done a good job for us since he's been here in every area you could do, off the field, on the field, leadership, moxie, intelligence, but it's early. We've played a couple preseason games against probably some vanilla looks but he's making strides everyday and that's all you can ask of any other young player."

Since the Giants drafted Dart in the first round of this year's draft, Daboll has spoken about wanting the rookie to be ready for any situation. On Saturday night, the head coach threw him a surprise test. During the middle of a Wilson-led drive, Daboll subbed Dart in for one play without any warning. The quarterback completed a screen pass to tight end Theo Johnson, who was able to break loose for a 30-yard gain.

"I was like 'Serious?' He was like, 'Yeah.' I was like, 'Alright,'" Dart said about subbing in for one snap. "I didn't know that I was going to go in for one play and come back out. He is making up scenarios where you never know when your number is going to be called and you have to be ready for that. He has done it in practices, so I think that kind of taught me that I need to continue to warm-up on the sideline because you just never know when things like that are going to happen."

Dart has looked completely comfortable operating the offense over the last two games, which is not always an easy feat for a rookie quarterback. Despite the rookie's early success, Daboll reiterated that Wilson is the team's starting quarterback.

"Russ is our starter and we're going to keep developing Jaxson…" the head coach said. "We have a plan. We had a plan a while ago. Previous stop we've had, we've had a plan for this quarterback. It's specific to each quarterback that you have, they have to possess the traits that you covet, that you look for in the draft. I think we just have to keep working with him and understand there's going to be a lot of downs. I know there's some ups right now but there's going to be a lot of downs and we just got to keep growing and communicating, just keep getting better."

Back in front of the home crowd

Saturday's game represented the team's first outing of the 2025 campaign at MetLife Stadium. With the number of new players added to the roster this offseason, it was also the first home game in front of Giants fans for a lot of the team, including Russell Wilson. The veteran has plenty of familiarity with the stadium, as it was there that he helped lead the Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory back in February of 2014.

"Just to be back in this stadium – this stadium means a lot to me, to be honest with you," Wilson said. "I remember pulling up to the stadium just to remind myself that I've been here before and been successful here in this stadium before. So that feeling of winning a Super Bowl and then to put on the blue and white, to be in this stadium as a New York Giant is a tremendous honor.

"And so, I love doing it with our teammates, to do that and we're excited about the season. We're excited about where we can go. We've got a lot of work to do, but we're very capable of what we want to accomplish and so we've just got to keep our heads down and stay humble and hungry. But to be here in front of our fans was a true blessing and a lot of gratitude."

Joining Wilson as a member of the quarterback room making his MetLife Stadium debut as a Giant was Dart. The rookie shared his excitement about playing in front of Giants fans for the first time earlier in the week, and it sounds like his first home game exceeded his own expectations.

"It was sick," Dart said about his MetLife debut. "Going out there in warmups and just seeing the stadium before it got filled up and then feeling the energy of the crowd come in. I was happy with how many more Giants fans there were. I mean, I know it was a home game, but I was happy about that. Hopefully we can just continue to bring a lot of energy, bring home a lot of wins and get everybody excited about the season."

O-line 'has done a nice job'

One cannot mention the success of the offense these last two games without talking about the performance of the guys up front. Through the first two preseason games, the unit has really stepped up. Giants quarterbacks have attempted 89 passes and have been sacked only two times, while the offense has totaled 65 points and 874 yards. While the offense's success is a result of everyone playing together, Daboll did note the O-line "has done a nice job" so far this preseason.

Perhaps the most impressive offensive lineman thus far has been Marcus Mbow, as the rookie fifth-round pick put together another impressive outing on Saturday. Through two preseason games, Mbow has been on the field for 68 pass-blocking snaps and has surrendered zero sacks and three total pressures, according to Pro Football Focus. He's done this while lining up at both right tackle and left tackle, highlighting the rookie's positional versatility.

Adding even more significance to Saturday's game against the Jets was the fact that it was offensive lineman Evan Neal's first NFL game at guard. As we all know, Neal's shift inside from tackle was one of the big storylines surrounding the team this offseason. While Neal has shown some flashes during practice, this was his first true test at his new position, and according to PFF, he allowed only one pressure on 22 pass block snaps. His head coach said he saw some good signs from the young lineman on Saturday.

"He got some movement in the run game, did his assignments," Daboll said the day after the game. "(It was his) first game in there, played over 30 plays so we'll get him some more work this upcoming week."

While the starting offensive line has gotten a decent number of snaps together this preseason, the anchor of the unit has remained on the sidelines. Star left tackle Andrew Thomas is still on the Physically Unable to Perform List as he continues to rehab his way back from last year's foot surgery, but he continues to improve each day.

"Getting better, so we'll take it day by day and see where we're at," the head coach said on Sunday. "Each day he gets a little bit better, so we'll make that decision when we think it's best for us and him...

"He's on his rehab schedule and he's working hard to get back as quickly as he can."
