What We Learned: Confidence is higher with Russell Wilson

HYATT-WILSON-KONICA

Despite some dreary skies, the Giants were back at it Friday as they begin to gear up for next weekend's preseason opener.

The chilly weather did not slow down the excitement at practice as both sides of the ball came up with some big plays.

Coach Brian Daboll spoke to the media before practice, while wide receiver Jalin Hyatt, running back Devin Singletary, and offensive lineman Marcus Mbow met with reporters after.

Here is what we learned Friday.

Hyatt: 'Everybody's confidence is higher' with Russ

When Russell Wilson signed with the Giants back in March, he gave a shoutout to a number of new teammates during his introductory press conference, including Jalin Hyatt. The veteran quarterback said the young receiver was one of the first guys he called after agreeing to the deal with the team, and that Hyatt is "untapped in terms of what he's capable of."

Throughout spring practices, we saw the pair begin to develop some nice chemistry in the passing game. Hyatt often found himself at the receiving end of Wilson's moonball throws downfield, especially with Malik Nabers sidelined. While Hyatt dealt with a minor injury himself towards the start of camp, the 23-year-old has been back on the field the last two days, once again catching passes from long-time quarterback. It's obvious that Wilson has helped the young receiver in a big way, both on and off the field.

"It feels a lot different, especially since we have Russ, who's been to the Super Bowl before, been to the playoffs, has a lot of success," Hyatt told the media. "He called me, at the time we signed him, and he just brings confidence to myself. So, for myself, I just have to make plays for him. When you do that, you get more."

Hyatt added: "[Wilson is] a true pro, a true leader. He always calls me, texts me, if he sees something that he liked or didn't like, and he's so good at communicating with our receivers, with our tight ends, with our running backs. I think you can just see it in that room; everybody's confidence is higher. It's going to be a fun year, like I said, in that receiver room for us. We have to make plays, and we have to execute when our name's called."

Following a season in which he caught just eight passes for 62 yards, Hyatt said on Friday he felt he "could have done better." Well, the young receiver decided to try to do something about that heading into his third NFL season. Hyatt, who said he played at around 171-172 pounds last season, bulked up to 189-190 pounds since the end of the 2024 campaign.

"For myself, I just felt like I need to get stronger, more physical," said the third-year wideout. "It helped me with contested catches, helped me with blocking. Not only that, with press technique, especially going against bigger corners in the league. So that's one of the biggest emphases for myself."

Singletary: 'One of the best [RB] rooms I've been a part of'

The Giants' running back room is another position group that has undergone significant changes since the start of last offseason. Since the end of the 2023 season, Devin Singletary was signed in free agency before Tyrone Tracy and Cam Skattebo were selected in back-to-back drafts.

The team's top three running backs "are capable to run, to pass block, to run routes," as Daboll mentioned in his morning press conference. While the three share similar attributes on the field, the veteran of the group shared some of their differences off of it.

"It's fun," Singletary said about the RB group. "This is one of the best rooms I've been a part of. Skatt, obviously, he brings the energy. He's always upbeat. Trace, going into his second year. He's kind of in between the laid back and bringing the energy, then you got me, I'm laid back. I'm the vet but I like what we got. It's three guys, we can all do everything, we're different in ways but we can all do everything. In the league, I feel like you have to have that."

Tracy is coming off a promising rookie campaign in which he accumulated over 1,000 yards from scrimmage, despite spending the first month of the season in a reserve role. Now heading into Year 2, Tracy is more aware of what he needs to work on in order to bring his game to the next level.

"He got a year under his belt so he's not like a deer in the headlights," Singletary told reporters. "He knows what's going on now. Now it's instead of trying to work on so many things, it's just these small things he has to work on, like let me get better at this, let me get better at that. He can really hone in on his game so that's the biggest changes I've seen with him."

Mbow: Adjustment to NFL has been 'smooth'

After the completion of the 2025 NFL Draft, general manager Joe Schoen said the team was "a little bit surprised" that Marcus Mbow was still available when they were on the clock at No. 154. Schoen said the team "really liked his film" and were excited about both his athleticism and his position flexibility.

Through the first week of training camp, we have seen glimpses of his athletic abilities. Mbow has had some strong reps in 1-on-1 drills against some of the team's best defensive linemen, something the 22-year-old has been looking forward to for a long time.

"It's been smooth," said the rookie lineman. "It's really one of the main reasons I was looking forward to becoming a pro, just being able to go against better competition day in and day out. I feel like I'm doing a good job adjusting to the tempo of things."

While you could go down the list of talented defensive linemen Mbow and the rest of the O-line has had to face during practice, the player generating the most buzz is of course Abdul Carter. The No. 3 overall pick in this year's draft has displayed some impressive pass rush moves over the first week of training camp, getting into the quarterbacks' faces on a consistent basis. Mbow shared with the media how going up against Carter on some reps has helped improve his own game.

"He's a great player, extremely fast, a lot of bend so it's good to be able to go against him," Mbow said. "Iron sharpens iron daily. Not a lot of people can move the way he does. He's very fast, very explosive cat. He's able to bend the edge very well so being to go against that and being able to fight over the top of the rush, plays like that."
