Giants awarded compensatory draft pick

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants have been awarded one compensatory selection in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The choice is in the fifth round, the 171st overall pick. A total of 32 compensatory selections were awarded to 15 teams. The Giants join the Atlanta Falcons and Washington Redskins as teams to get a fifth-round compensatory pick.

The extra fifth-round selection choice gives the Giants 10 choices in the seven-round draft, including three in the fifth round.

They do not own a third-round choice after selecting cornerback Sam Beal in the third round of the 2018 supplemental draft. Beal underwent shoulder surgery and spent the season on injured reserve. The Giants also do not have their own seventh-round selection after sending it to the Denver Broncos in a trade for punter Riley Dixon.

The Giants are in possession of their picks in rounds one (sixth overall), two, four, five, and six. They have one extra choice in the fourth round (acquired from New Orleans in a trade for cornerback Eli Apple), and two in the fifth round (one acquired from Detroit in the trade for defensive tackle Damon Harrison and the compensatory selection). And they have two choices in the seventh round; the first was acquired from the Los Angeles Rams in the trade that also brought linebacker Alec Ogletree to the Giants, and the second from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for center Brett Jones.

The compensatory selections are awarded to teams based on the Compensatory Draft System's net loss formula. Under the system, teams that suffer a net loss of compensatory free agents (CFA) during the prior free agency signing period are eligible to receive a corresponding number of compensatory selections in the following year's draft, up to a maximum of four selections.

The level of compensation (i.e., the round and selection number within the round) that the prior club receives for each CFA lost is based upon a weighted combination of the CFA's average yearly compensation, postseason honors and playtime with the new team, ranked against all players in the league who are on rosters.

Last year, the Giants acquired four veteran free agents in tackle Nate Solder, safety Michael Thomas, wide receiver Cody Latimer, and linebacker Kareem Martin. They lost six free agents: offensive linemen Justin Pugh, Weston Richburg, and D.J. Fluker, linebacker Devon Kennard, cornerback Ross Cockrell, and quarterback Geno Smith.

The NFL Draft will be held April 25-27, with the last four rounds on the final day.
